... Big Bang fics? You know what pairings/genres I love - slash/gen, no death stories, pairings Sam/Dean, Dean/Castiel, Clark/Lex, Kirk/McCoy, Sheppard/McKay... - and I know that there have been new BB stories posted in various fandoms - am I right? But usually, there are many, many bad fics that you have to peruse to find the one true gem... So, any recs? Something I mustn't miss for anything in the world?

Of fics...

Did it ever happen to you that you were reading a fic and you thought "great, awesome" and then suddenly, the author introduced a character/plot twist and you suddenly literally screeched to a halt and totally lost interest in the fic?

I remember a fic like that in the Gundam Wing fandom, back then, in the old days ;P In the story, Duo was a banshee and I enjoyed it very much but then the author turned it into a Harry Potter Xover and I just couldn't read another frickin' line of that thing. My little me dislikes Harry Potter with the intensity of seven suns, you see X( *sigh* Oh, well...

Fic recs!
Supernatural - I finally started reading the big bang fics! Go me ;P
GEN --> "weathercock snowfall (starlight cockcrow)" by [livejournal.com profile] kroki_refur. Dean's got three weeks to live, and Sam's acting like a freakin asshole. And hey, it's not like that's never happened before, but this is a little too much like history repeating for Dean's liking. Awesome! Words: 27.000.

Stargate Atlantis:
MCSHEP --> "That Pon Farr Thing" by chelle. John suffers from seizures and only Rodney's touch can make them stop. Yes, I do love to see Sheppard suffer, sue me XP. Words: 10.000+.
katikat: (Default)
You know, I thought that the SPN fandom wanked about female characters but boy, was I in for a treat in the SGA fandom - so much Keller!hate like you wouldn't believe it! I mean, it's true that they introduced her to get a young, blond love-interest on the show (shipping her with both Ronon and McKay really didn't help) and she replaced the much beloved Carson but... ugh! *covers her eyes*

SGA fic rec:
GEN (if a bit slashy in later parts of the series) --> "Retrograde" by Martha Wilson. The Atlantis expedition has been lost for three years. SG-1 goes to find them, and arrives just a little too late. This is simply awesome. I mean it. It's full of h/c but the characters - both SGA and SG-1 - are so them. Especially the O'Neill vs. Daniel and Sheppard vs. McKay banter is just perfect! Words: almost 30.000.

And I have a question for Charmed fans on my flist. I have an idea for a future fic but for that, I need to know how many children the Halliwell sisters had. Piper had three: two boys and a girl; Pheobe had two girls, IRC; and Paige? I think that Paige had three or four, twins among them... at least one boy and one girl. Oh, and what was the name of Darryl's son? *head/desk*

Grr!

What is it with people misspelling names all the time? Turning Jensen into Jenson, Ronon into Ronan and - my favorite - Sentinel into Sentinal makes me very irked!

SGA fic rec:
MCSHEP --> "Soul and the Company" series by [livejournal.com profile] leahwoof. John is an android on the run that hides at McKay's, pretending to be his PlayMate. This is not a humorous crack!fic. It's angsty and sad and although it does have a happy ending, it made me sniffy and teary-eyed. Words: 80.000+.

So many comments to respond to... so little time! *head/desk*

Work-related stuff first... I finally finished editing Salvatore's "The Legacy" and also finished reading Douglass' "Battleaxis". Go me!

I'm usually not really interested in the ratings of various repeats but this kinda surprised me...

CW ratings:
- this Monday...
Gossip Girl: 1.08 mil., 0.5/2
One Tree Hill: 890.000, 0.4/1

Notice the demo! O.o

- last Thursday...
Smallville: 1.70 mil., 0.6/2
Supernatural: 1.77 mil., 0.6/2

O.o!!! SPN did better than SV. Color me surprised, really.

Some SGA recs...
Vid recs:
Cartoon Heroes by mamoru - behind the scenes stuff from SG-1 and SGA cut together. So funny!
Stress by rache and sandy - this is so McKay that I giggled myself silly!
Sheppard and the Wraith Queens by Hesternic - my my, the Wraith queens really do love Sheppard.

And a MCSHEP fic rec: "Legion the Things I Would Give to Oblivion" by Auburn. Atlantis is destroyed. John and Rodney are the only survivors. I cried my eyes out. One by one, they lose them all until only John and Rodney stumble through the stargate into the SGC, alive but broken. Told in a non-linear way. Words: 10.000+.

Bouncy!

-> This is my 3rd? 4th? 5th? layout in a week. Woo! XP

-> For the first time, there will be a blooper reel on the Stargate Atlantis DVDs. Yahoo for the S4 box set! *grabby hands*

-> The 2nd part of [livejournal.com profile] annkiri's report on Jared's panel. I love the fanboy's questions! And Jared talking about Jensen just makes my heart melt. Aww...

-> Fic rec time:
SPN:
WINCEST --> "Stoned" by [livejournal.com profile] setissma. Dean comes back to the motel room stoned. A great feel!good fic *vbg* Words: 1.700.

SGA:
OT4 --> "The Complexity of Daily Life" by Teaphile. The expedition had to flee from Atlantis. Now they have to make a life for themselves on a foreign planet. Rodney, Teyla and Ronon get together but John refuses to join. He's asexual and he fears how the others will react. Oh wow, there really need to be more fics about asexuality. It's quite an interesting plot, let me tell you. Words: 30.000+.
katikat: (Default)
Yes, I'm in love with SGA *vbg* I just finished watching the ep The Tower. The ep itself was only mildly interesting but the character stuff was awesome.

As usually, the bad guys zeroed on Sheppard because of his ATA gene - I'm glad that they keep bringing the whole ATA thing back - Ronon went neanderthal on the enemy soldiers, being all protective of John, and Rodney threw a hissy fit that Ronon and Teyla allowed the bad guys to take Sheppard. I loved that scene! And then the scene in the red curtained bedroom, when the princess came to Sheppard to seduce him... "I never see these things coming." Poor John XD In the commentary, they said that Joe Flanigan enjoyed himself immensely while doing that scene. Oh, and again, Rodney and John saved the day: John provided the plan, Rodney the means. Those two are for the win, really *vbg*

And some SGA fic recs, all of them MCSHEP and written by [livejournal.com profile] nixa_jane aka [livejournal.com profile] laytoncolt!
"An Introduction to the Grapevine" - By his third week on Atlantis, Ronon had come to some conclusions. The Atlantians talked too much, but knew good food, their guns weren't as cool as his, and John Sheppard was obviously in love with Rodney McKay. Words: 3.000+.

"Gods That Slumber" and the sequel "Engineering the Fall" - AU in which John is actually an Ancient. First story 1.000+ words, the second one 3.000+.

Oh, and [livejournal.com profile] skoosiepants' slashy introduction to Stargate Atlantis. So funny and exactly the reasons why I watch the show!

GEN --> "September is Elation" by Northface. Sam’s first semester at Stanford starts out well, but soon he finds himself desperately missing his family. Words: 1.000+.

GEN --> "Vocabulary" by [livejournal.com profile] innie_darling. Given a week to define himself, Sam watches Dean. Words: 3.000+.

GEN --> "Wishing Well" by [livejournal.com profile] innie_darling. Sammy makes a birthday wish. Words: 1.000+.

WINCEST --> "Shaky Ground" by [livejournal.com profile] damerel. Sam realizes that Dean has had the same relationship with John as he has now with Sam. Words: 3.000+.

SGA:
MCSHEP --> "Lycanthropes" by [livejournal.com profile] seikaitsukimizu. Lycanthropes could only happen in the Pegasus Galaxy. Words: 1.000+.

MCSHEP --> "Counting the Days" by [livejournal.com profile] seekergeek. "Yes." Landry responded dryly. "Seems Dr. McKay accidentally made Colonel Sheppard pregnant using Ancient technology they found in a lab on Atlantis. Our legal department is tearing their hair out trying to figure out how to they're going to write out that birth certificate." MPREG! Words: 3.000+.

MCSHEP --> "Jump" by [livejournal.com profile] velocitygrass. Never in a million years had he suspected that Sheppard wasn't straight. Words: 1.000+.

I've been doing some reading on the "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" policy the American military forces have and I must say that I'm thoroughly disappointed by the American government. Did you know that out of the 25 countries that participate militarily in NATO, only three of them expressively forbid openly gay people to serve in their military forces? Guess what, it's the USA, Russia and China. The US should really take example from other countries:

Israel: "The Israel Defense Forces policies allow for gay men and lesbians to serve openly without discrimination or harassment due to actual or perceived sexual orientation. Moreover, gays in the IDF have special rights, such as the right to take a shower alone if they want to."

Canada: "On October 27th, 1992, protocol officer Michelle Douglas won a suit against the Canadian Forces for discrimination that had forced her resignation. Subsequently, Canada's official policy toward gay men and women in uniform has been one of non-discrimination.
A series of provincial and territorial Supreme Court decisions beginning in the summer of 2003 ruled in favour of the legality of gay marriage, and a national law to that effect was passed by Canada's parliament in the summer of 2005 by the Paul Martin Liberal government. In May of 2005, the Canada's first military gay wedding took place at Nova Scotia's Canadian Forces Base Greenwood. Officials described the ceremony as low-key but touching. A similar wedding has since taken place between two male Royal Canadian Mounted Police officers."

United Kingdom: "The United Kingdom's policy is to allow gay men and lesbians to serve openly and discrimination on a sexual orientation basis is forbidden. It is also forbidden for someone to pressure LGBT people to come out. All personnel are subject to the same "no-touching" rules."

So, Smallville gets a new regular? Well, that could actually make me watch S8! XD

I decided to slowly, one by one, buy the whole SG-1 show on DVDs - yes, SGA DVDs spoiled me rotten XD So, that means ten DVD box sets and two movies (so far). And from what I heard, they would like to keep producing two movies a year which would be awesome!

SPN fic rec:
SLASH (or is it HET?) --> "The Thing About Glass Slippers" by [livejournal.com profile] krisomniac. Dean changes into a girl to seduce Henricksen. It's so sad and bittersweet... Words: 5.000+.

SGA fic rec:
SLASH --> "Cycles" by Diamond-Raven. On a mission off-world, John goes missing for 13 years. Rodney waits for him to come back. Words: 1.000+.
katikat: (Default)
According to TVGuide.com, BBC has only green lit five hours of Torchwood for the show's 3rd season, adding that there could be more. I mean, huh? Only five hours? Five eps? Executive producer Julie Gardner said: "We've decided to do a five-part mini-series, one big story that will run during one week." I mean, a mini-series is better than nothing at all, right? But still... *sigh* Well, at least they didn't cancel it, right?

Thank you for the link, [livejournal.com profile] sharona1x2!

SGA fic rec time!
MCSHEP --> "Fading Skies" by Diamond-Raven. After John is badly wounded while serving in Somalia, he and Rodney have to learn how to make a serious physical disability a part of their lives. Words: 60.000+

This fic is a complete AU in which John and Rodney meet during their freshman year at the university. They get together but then John, who joined Air Force to pay for his education, is shipped off to Somalia where his chopper is shot down and he suffers a terrible injury - he becomes a paraplegic. But Rodney refuses to give up on him and they both have to accommodate. It's a really great story with painful details about what exactly does it mean to live with a paraplegic. Some people might argue that John is rather OOC in this story but he's still 25 and he just suffered a horrible injury after all. I like the fic very much!

Wow, I'm... I think I'm a bit in love. No, I'm totally smitten. With a fic. It's probably the most famous SG:A fic ever written...

MCSHEP --> "Written by the Victors" by [livejournal.com profile] speranza. John Sheppard leads a rebellion against the SGC and Earth and proclaims Atlantis an independent nation. Words: 50.000+

This story is... I have no words to describe its awesomeness properly. Like really. It's written in a very intriguing way, real scenes are mixed together with scientific reports and historical essays and Speranza even uses footnotes and a fictional bibliography and it seems all so... real - and that coming from someone who actually did study history. Wow, it's... I'm still swooning here.
katikat: (Default)
And now it's time for some fic rec'ing!

Supernatural:
GEN --> "Inner Child" by [livejournal.com profile] bellatemple. Dean swaps bodies with a 13-year-old girl. Words: 3.000+.

Stargate: Atlantis:
GEN --> "rageful" by [livejournal.com profile] seperis. The Wraith force John to use the chair over and over again. Words: -1.000.

GEN --> "A Change" by Stealth Dragon. Sam Carter notices a change in Rodney. Words: 3.000+.

GEN --> "Supplemental" by [livejournal.com profile] lierdumoa. Teyla gets a lesson in mechanics. The physics kind, not the car kind. Rodney loses his pudding cup. Hijinks. Words: 1.000+.

MCSHEP --> "Skirting Dignity" by [livejournal.com profile] seperis. In which Elizabeth tries not to laugh, Rodney tries to save the day, Zelenka tries to avoid paternity suits, and John tries to save his virtue. Words: 5.000+.

MCSHEP --> "French Fries" by Bernice. Zelenka realizes that Rodney is in love. Words: -1.000.

MCSHEP --> "After, or Maybe Between" by [livejournal.com profile] lavvyan. Sam sees Rodney and John together in a corridor. This fic is short and I would say G-rated but it's so touching! Words: -1.000.

Trinity

Last night, I watched SG:A's ep Trinity. It hurts every frickin' time. No, no one dies but it's still one of the most painful episodes of this series. Why? Because of the misplaced faith Sheppard has in McKay in this episode. Rodney asks John to trust him and John does because it is Rodney. Sheppard goes against his better judgment, against the advice of the other scientists, against Elizabeth's wishes and decides to have faith in Rodney. And then Rodney is wrong and it breaks them both.

This episode feels like a punch every time I watch it. But it is also a very good ep. On SG-1, Sam Carter was never wrong. She was the ueber-scientist who got it right every time. On SG:A, people make mistakes because of their ego and arrogance - Sheppard did too, just like Carson. I think that the only person who feels infallible to me on this series is Weir and maybe because of that I don't really care much for her.

So yeah, it hurts a lot to watch this ep, to see the expression on John's face when he realizes that Rodney was wrong. Not even a very geeky Sheppard could lighten it up - although it was cute to see McKay floored by the fact that yes, John did understand his technobabble.

And I found an excellent coda to this episode:
GEN --> "In Return" by [livejournal.com profile] tigs. Rodney asks Zelenka to take his place on Sheppard's team. Words: 3.000.

Fic rec-y things...
Supernatural: WINCEST --> "Amidst the Wars of Elements" by [livejournal.com profile] destina. Sam got Dean out of Hell and now they live together in a made-up world. Wow, this combines everything I love. Sam saving Dean from Hell and them living together without hunting! Words: 7.000+.

Stargate: Atlantis: GEN --> "Caffeine" by Alipeeps. John has a headache. And if that wasn't enough, he gives himself a concussion too! I like the way it's written. McKay and Beckett are awesome in this fic! Words: 5.000+.

Kristin E! posted the schedule of the premieres of various summer shows:
In Plain Sight: Sunday, June 1st, 10 p.m., USA
Stargate: Atlantis: Friday, July 11th, 10 p.m., Sci Fi
Psych: Friday, July 18th, 10 p.m., USA
Eureka: Tuesday, July 29th, 9 p.m., Sci Fi

The strike definitely pushed Eureka back. I can't wait for more of Sheriff Carter's awesomeness! XP

Ausiello responds to Supernatural fans' concerns - and he makes quite fun of them. I don't blame him though. The fans' freaking over Jared or Jensen leaving the show is getting old and ridiculous. Like really XP
katikat: (Default)
Last night, I watched SG:A's Runner ep. Finally, Ronon's there! Not that I had anything against Ford but he just didn't click with me. That's why I just couldn't get through the first couple of eps for a long time. But with Ronon... Yum! That man is gorgeous, even with the awful dreadlocks! And he has this... presence, I would say. Even if he's not saying anything, you just have to notice him, standing in the background! Also, I love what David Hewlett said about Jason Momoa in the commentary, that it's like having a giant great dane puppy on the set, that Jason is so enthusiastic. I love the commentaries by David and Martin Wood best!

Take a look at the promo for the new USA Network series called In Plain Sight. That looks fantastic! I have to find out when they'll air it!

Yay, I finished watching Stargate: Atlantis S1, eps, commentaries, behind the scenes, everything. And it was so awesome! The DVDs are so worth it! The best commentaries? Martin Gero, Marting Wood and David Hewlett - and Joe Flanigan the one time he joined those three. And Marting Wood and Joe Flanigan for the pilot. Rachel Luttrell and Tori Higginson are mostly giggly and don't really say anything show related. And Rainbow Sun Francks is all about how "black" he is - no, really, he kept talking about being Afro-American a lot, must be a touchy subject for him (Me? As long as I like the character, I couldn't care less about the color of his skin *shrugs*).

"Behind the scenes" are so awesome too! But it's funny how Joe Flanigan's doing his best to not be there, like really. He says three words and whoosh, he's gone XD It's rather funny. But obviously, he's a real goof. I loved the commentary for Siege I - he and David Hewlitt were so snarky. David said that the scene where they shot Sheppard and he lost conscience, that Joe did the fainting in such a "girly" way. Joe just snickered and rolled with it X) And Joe said that David looked like a commercial for cranberry juice in his purple flight suit. They were obviously enjoying themselves very much!

Also, I'm now the proud owner of S3 of SG:A too! Hurray, hurray *hugs the shiny*

Tuesday's fast national ratings:
NCIS: last week 14.73 mil., 3.0/9; this week 16.35 mil., 3.4/9
Reaper: last week 1.99 mil., 0.9/2; this week 2.69 mil., 1.2/3

NCIS did great, look how it grew during the two-hour-finale:
8:00 p.m. 14.30 mil., 2.8/8
8:30 p.m. 15.66 mil., 3.2/8
9:00 p.m. 17.35 mil., 3.7/9
9:30 p.m. 18.09 mil., 3.9/9

And I have yet to see the finale *bites nails*

Also, Reaper didn't have an original lead-in. At 8 pm, they aired a re-run of Reaper and it brought in 1.75 mil. viewers and 0.2/8 demo. After that followed the original episode which was this season's finale.

Fox moves fall to late summer: "Fox will kick off its season in late August with a week of two-hour premiere events in an effort to build up audiences early, beginning with the debut of Prison Break's fourth season on August 25."

Last night, I watched several eps of Stargate: Atlantis: The Storm, The Eye, The Defiant One and Hot Zone and I must say the show is getting better and better. So far, I loved The Defiant One and Hot Zone best. TDO for all the Sheppard/McKay interaction, for McKay being all worried about Sheppard when John went out against the Wraith alone. And HZ for the suspense. I think that it was a great idea and again, it showed us a very smart Sheppard - I mean, a nuclear explosion?! That was really and truly awesome! Although in The Eye, I loved how Sheppard raised the gate shield and killed 50 men without blinking. That was all kinds of awesome.

But my favorite interactions were, curiously, in The Storm:
John: I'm here!
Rodney: I told you to contact me when you got to the first one, major!
John: I'm in the first one, Rodney.
Rodney: Oh, sorry, I've already done mine.
John: Oh, great, good for you.
Weir: Me too.
John: Good for everyone!

Rodney: Yes, theoretically.
John: Like dinosaurs turning into birds theoretically or theory of relativity theoretically?
Rodney: *beat* What?

Rodney: It's a brisk walk away.
John: And by brisk you mean... far?
Rodney: Err... By walk I mean run.

And a gen fic rec for SG:A's Hot Zone:
"Biology Lesson" by K. Hanna Korossy. So, John got nuked a bit. But what if it was more than a bit? Words: ~3.000.

I'm getting more and more disappointed by the way [livejournal.com profile] spnstoryfinders is being maintained.
