Man, they all look so young in the pilot! Babies! No wonder, it was filmed 15 years ago. Sheesh on a pogo stick. I remember watching it "live" on RTL2. Ha!

It's so strange, to see them all... not as close as they're going to be. I mean, when you watch season 8 or so, they're like a family. I mean, even in S1 they do care about each other, that's pretty obvious, but the easy rapport isn't there yet.

I wanted to watch the pilot so that I could compare SG-1's Children of Gods to SGA's Rising directly. And even though I love both sets of characters immensely, I like SGA's pilot much better. I think it's because a) SG-1's is a bit... rough around the edges, it was new and not all that well thought through and b) it's too military. SGA's pilot was like a happy extension of SG-1, I mean, everything felt... brighter, more colorful. And what I also adored was the setting, Atlantis itself, the soldiers and the civilians were pretty balanced out, neither faction had the upper hand. They WORKED TOGETHER as a team, they were friends, neither side was trying to upstage the other. They completed each other, together they made a whole. In SG-1, the civilian part was suppressed by the military, the soldiers had the last word. In SGU, both sides were at each other's throat all the time, backstabbing and hidden agendas were on the menu every frickin' day - so not my cuppa. But SGA... that one was perfect - till the writers started mucking about with it, in S4.5 and S5.

I also wanted to watch the pilot to get into the proper headset for some SG books. I chose "Transitions" by Sabine C. Bauer, which is a crossover between SG-1 and SGA :)

Stargate

Next year, it'll be 20 years since this movie was made. 20 YEARS! And I still have a soft spot for it in my heart. And even though Roland Emmerich and Dean Devlin keep bitching about the shows, how their execs didn't go the way they had planned, I hope they will never make their own continuation, a thing they keep threatening us with. It's at least 15 years too late for that. Today's sci-fi fans know Stargate because of SG-1 and SGA, maybe even SGU (with a little bit of teeth gnashing, that show brought a LOT of bad blood into the fandom!), not the original movie.

I have loved, LOVED Daniel since I laid my eyes on him. I used to have such a weakness for James Spader. I thought they chose Michael Shanks perfectly for Daniel in SG-1. With Richard Dean Anderson... his O'Neill couldn't have been more different than Kurt Russell's. I mean, by the time the show started, Jack had time to get over his grief, I know, but RDA's Jack was funny and goofy and sarcastic, something I just can't see Russell's ever being.

And now I feel like re-watching the show. Would you believe that I still haven't seen seasons 6-10? Not properly anyway. I have the show on DVD, all of it, but when they killed off Daniel and replaced him with Jonas... I lost interest in the show. I have always liked the concept, but my main reason for watching was Daniel Jackson. And I never got back into it, not really. So, I still have 5 seasons of one of the best sci-fi shows ever to watch. I guess I should get on to it, right?

I just re-watched ep 701, Fallen, of SG-1. You know, the one with nekkid!Daniel returning from the dead - again! - and I realized just how much I missed the show. I'll have to marathon it soon. SG-1 and SGA are two of my most favorite sci-fi shows ever - if you know me even a little, you know that SGU is not - and I feel the need to watch a space based series again - it's like an itch that needs to be scratched. I watched this show religiously till the end of S5 - I guess you know why, right? - and then only here and there, so I have basically 5 seasons of mostly unwatched Stargate waiting for me! \o/

Oh, and why did I watch it? I want to read the SG-1 tie-in novel "Four Dragons" by Diana Dru Botsford and it's set directly after 701&702.

Top 10 Resurrections:

#9 Daniel Jackson:

As any Stargate SG-1 fan knows, nobody on the show died quite as many times as Michael Shanks’ Daniel Jackson – hell, he even died in the original movie, too, back when he was played by James Spader. Whether being shot by evil Goa’uld or succumbing to radiation poisoning, Jackson had an uncanny habit of shuffling off this mortal coil and then returning bright-eyed and bushy-tailed as though nothing had happened.

It became such a running joke on the series that eventually the writers made a point of mocking his many deaths and rebirths, in the form of this rant from Colonel O’Neill after Jackson’s latest apparent demise:

“All we know for sure is that he’s missing. Forget it! I’m not falling for it this time! How many times have you thought he was gone? And then he shows up, in one form or another. I’m sorry, but we’re not having a memorial service for someone who is not dead. You hear that? I’M NOT BUYING IT! He’s just waiting for us to say a bunch of nice things about him. Next thing you know, he’ll come waltzing through that door!”

And he was right, you know. Not dead.

#1 The Winchesters

Let’s face it, the Winchester family are the undisputed kings of coming back from the dead. You just can’t argue with statistics: in one episode alone, Dean Winchester died over a hundred times after being stuck in a deadly time loop (favourite methods of death: being mauled by a golden retriever and choking on a sausage).

The brothers have not only visited Heaven several times over (though they’re only allowed to remember their latest trip there, seeing as that was a fact-finding mission) but they’ve also spent years in Hell, done deals with demons to reanimate each other and actually killed themselves to wander around as ghosts or even talk to Death. They’ve messed with the laws of the universe so much that the universe, quite rightly, is a bit pissed off about it, and Death is starting to get rather narked.

Probably the best resurrection we’ve ever seen on the show came at the start of season four when Dean fought his way out of his own grave, but hey, we’re sure there will be more Winchesters-back-from-death adventures before we know it. Seriously, these guys just won’t stay dead.

LOL! I seriously rolled on the floor, laughing my butt off, reading those bolded parts. For real. OMG! "Bright-eyed and bushy-tailed" - LOL!

I felt really angry/disappointed/annoyed when, some time ago, Brad Wright stated once and for all that there would be no more SG-1 or SGA movies. Ever again. But then, I read this article and can I say, a bullet dodged?

The third Stargate SG-1 movie would have finally revealed the top-secret Stargate program to the world, Stargate executive producer Joseph Mallozzi revealed on his blog this week.

(...)

Mallozzi said that, even after those shows’ sets were taken down and key pieces auctioned off, he still held out hope that Revolution and the Atlantis movie (titled Stargate: Extinction) might still be made. (...)

“I still held out hope for both movies because, in the case of Stargate: Revolution, the lionshare of the action would have been off-world and ship-based while, in the case of Stargate: Extinction, although there was some action on Atlantis itself (eminently achievable through the magic of VFX), much of the story takes place on Earth and off-world,” he explained.

WTF?! The Stargate program revealed?! No, just no. I'm now so glad that the movie was canned. There would've been no way back from that and I never ever wanted to see the SGC revealed. Part of the show's charm was that the whole thing was Top Secret! And completely CGI Atlantis? The gate room and all? For real?!

Wow, I never thought I would say that but man, I'm so glad that these movies weren't made after all...

Reports are coming out of the Creation Stargate Convention happening this weekend in Vancouver. The major news, just an hour old, is that Brad Wright said there will be no movies for any of the three Stargate series. Link

Not that I was still holding any real hope, but... They canceled SGA to MAKE THE FRICKIN' MOVIES! And now we have a flop of a series and no movies. Great job, TPTB. Just awesome!

At least we have the "Legacy" book series... *sigh*

... go screw yourself, Big Finish. I have loyally bought their audio dramas, SGA and SG-1. But this year, it's basically, "oh, it'll be all SG-1, no SGA stories, pft - but you'll get SG-1!"

Seriously, I love Daniel, I really do, but I'm first and foremost an SGA fan! I'm getting sick of everybody dropping SGA in favor of SG-1 and SGU. On TV, it's only SGU now, no movies at all for SGA. Franchise? Let's see - comic books: SG-1 only, audiobooks: SG-1 only, books: in the last year? SG-1 and SGU only. So yeah, no SGA whatsoever anywhere.

I do like SG-1 but I'm starting to hate in on principle.

Did you see? I just bought...

Stargate SG-1 S10 for $17.99
The Dresden Files - The Complete First Season for $11.99
On the Other Hand, Death: A Donald Strachey Mystery for $16.99

Yowza! I've been waiting for a drop like this for months! And they offer Pretender for $12.99 per season, X-Files for $18.99 per season and so on... I'm smitten!

Sarcasm is the lowest form of wit - TM 2x03 )

You know, I've been thinking of why I feel no desire to watch SGU. I mean, the inept TPTB turned SGA into a carbon copy of SG-1 later on, replicators and Asgards included, and I still loved the show to pieces, even more than SG-1. So it can't be just the fact that SGU is BSG with a gate slapped on it. But I think, I think it's... brand fatigue for me.

For fourteen years they've been churning out gate stories now, the same producers, the same writers - and I loved SG-1 and I loved SGA (even though I still can't forgive the writers for the 2nd half of S5!). But SGU is just... too much. If they continued SGA I would have gobbled it with a spoon but SGU? It's like getting a third variation of flavor of your favorite cookie - and it just doesn't taste right anymore, especially when everybody's telling you that there must be something wrong with you if you prefer the old flavor...

SGU doesn't feel like a new series, more like a remake of an old one that wasn't hip anymore. You see, I loved the old BSG that was about adventure and friendship and family. The new BSG, though critically acclaimed felt... wrong with its darkness and despair. And SGU gives me the same feeling.

Of course, the fact that I don't like any of the characters or the actors is a big part of it, too.

I might yet become a comic book fan: Dynamite Entertainment, comic book publisher, announced a new agreement with Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer (MGM) for a comics and series of graphic novels based on the long-running Stargate™ television franchise.

"Helping bring the world of Stargate to life is a team of top creative talent including: John Watson, whose work has graced Marvel Comics covers as one of the finest painters in the industry. (...) Dynamite is also bringing in famed Star Wars painter Dave Dorman as the main cover artist, as well as writers (...) Doug Murray (Jungle Girl and ‘Nam) with the continuing stories from Stargate Atlantis beginning with Season Six and Brandon Jerwa (Battlestar Galactica) on Stargate SG1 beginning with Season #11. Dynamite will be launching a Stargate #0 bringing three different stories in one event comic for $1.00, to help introduce fans to the Stargate 'universe'.

Awesome! More SGA and SG-1 adventures!

So now, it's...
Fandemonium: books
Big Finish: audiobooks
Dynamite Entertainment: comic books

You know, I just might buy SG-1's final cut of Children of the Gods. I mean, not now, when it still costs almost 20 bucks, but one day, when the price drops in one of Amazon's famous sales. And why? Because of the audio commentary by Brad Wright and Richard Dean Anderson! The first couple of seasons of SG-1 do not have any audio commentaries, which is too bad.
katikat: (Default)
You know, I was thinking about why I liked SGA better than SG-1 - besides McShep, that is ;P - and I think that it had a lot to do with the setting. I mean, SGC was a real military base: concrete, tunels, grey and khaki colors - a place people go to work and escape as soon as possible. Whereas Atlantis was a real home, I guess: copper walls, bubbly water decorations, sunny balconies, awesome views... The crew loved it like a home and defended it like a home, not just a military base. I never got that feeling watching SG-1...

Lie to Me

The pilot of Lie to Me has been sitting on my HDD for months - and now I finally watched it! And it was so good! Like The Mentalist but different, funny and interesting in its own way. I'm thinking of buying the show on DVD - to download the rest of S1 would be a pain in the butt XP Anyone on my flist watching this show?

And speaking of DVDs - I ordered SG-1's Continuum because Amazon dropped the price to $6.99 only - it doesn't get any lower than that! Now to get S10 and I will have the whole SG-1 series in my grabby hands!
And I added the show Acapulco H.E.A.T. to my order - the whole series (two seasons) for $9.99! Yes, Amazon is having a huge sale again :) I used to love this show to pieces - it's one of those "directly to syndication" series like Baywatch: beautiful people, not much plot ;P I just loved Michael Worth playing the martial artist Tommy. Gorgeous guy!
katikat: (Default)
I ordered seasons 7 and 8 of SG-1 - yes, Amazon is having a sale again, selling SG-1 for $19.99 per season. Now, all I need are SG-1 S10 and Continuum and I'm all set up for a huge SG summer marathon *rubs hands*

And I'm about to start reading Peter J. Evans' "Angelus", an SGA tie-in novel *rubs hands some more* Kinda in a Stargate heaven right now!

But work first!

I'm now the proud owner of S6 of SG-1, you know, the only season during which Daniel wasn't a part of the team - and it was also the season when SG-1 lost me as a regular viewer. I mean, I admit freely that I'm a Daniel!girl - just like I'm a Sheppard!girl on SGA - and without him, the show just didn't interest me that much. Looking back now, S6 offers a great opportunity for character exploration and Daniel's return is truly spectacular but at that time... After S6 and even after Daniel's return, I was never able to get back on the horse, so to speak. I only caught an ep here or there, never watched it regularly again, that's why I'm looking forward to the DVDs - even though I have no idea when I will actually have the time to watch them :P

Hey, I didn't know that Dan Shea, the SG-1 stunt coordinator and "Sgt. Siler" in one, is now the stunt coordinator on Psych! How cool is that? I mean, it reminds me of when I found out that Andy Mikita, the SG-1 and SGA director, directed some eps of Blood Ties too! Yes, it's a small world :P

* [livejournal.com profile] juice817 posted the most awesome LA con reports about Jared, Jensen, Misha etc.!

* I changed my layout again, new header and all. It's really curious what you can do with PhotoFiltre when you are patient enough :P

* I ordered season 6 of SG-1 on DVD. Now, all I have to do is get seasons 7, 8 and 10 and Continuum and I will own the whole show!

* I also pre-ordered Peter Evans' "Angelus", a SGA tie-in novel - from Amazon, this time. Hopefully, this one will arrive as it should *crosses fingers*

I ordered S4 and 5 of Stargate SG-1 on DVD. Amazon's having a sale again! And yes, I still haven't even unpacked S1 to 3 but it's a real deal to get the DVDs for just $21.99 a season these days!

So, I need to do some TV marathons soon: due South, Stargate SG-1, NCIS... Yeah, as soon as I catch up on the shows that air now, that is. I'm so behind on stuff that it's not even funny *head/desk*

... not to watch Stargate Universe. And why? Among other things because of this interview with Robert Carlyle. They totally lost me at:
"What makes this Stargate different from the previous shows in the franchise is, it’s a lot darker than the other ones,” the actor said. “This has less to do with interaction with an alien race and more about survival on the ship itself.” (...)

And Carlyle’s own character won’t be another noble leader, but a man with his own, hidden agenda. “The others think that he’s maybe losing it,” he hinted. “But he does things for a reason.”

In a show with such a tone, of course, don’t expect everyone to survive as one big, happy family. In addition to the conflict between the men and women on the ship, death will certainly be present.
I'm sorry but the reason why I watched SG-1 and SGA was because the team was made of heroes, reluctant ones but heroes nonetheless. They went on adventures, they had fun, they explored. O'Neill and Sheppard were noble leaders that were ready to sacrifice themselves for their team/crew, they didn't have any hidden agenda, they didn't plot behind their team-members' backs...

All the things that TPTB use to make this Stargate "better" were why I dropped Battlestar Galactica. And since I dropped a show where I actually liked the actors/characters, I definitely won't start watching a new series with - for me - unlikable actors and characters, thank you very much :(
