There will be a 6 issue long comic book series based on Benedict Cumberbatch's STID character: link. Spoilers cut to spare those poor souls who haven't seen the movie yet! ) Isn't it awesome?!

Nightwing

I decided to get a Nightwing comic book. So far, I've been buying Marvel comic books only and I thought it was time to read some DC stuff too. I went looking on Amazon and... Ł36 for a used copy of "A Knight in Blüdhaven"? Ł70 for a new one? Are they NUTS? So, I got my hands on it in a... different way *shifty*

And in the process, I stumbled across a very interesting bit of info: I didn't know that Nightwing AKA Dick Grayson was the victim of a female-on-male rape. That quite shocked me, to be honest. I'm used to seeing non-consensual sex in manga but in a comic book?

Spoilers. And me being annoyed by rape-related stereotypes in our society! )

So, I decided to start reading the X-Men comic books. But where to begin? Have you seen the mess that's the X-Men continuity and whatnot? In the end, I told myself, screw it. Just pick one list and follow it chronologically, girl! Do not try to figure out how it all fits together, you'll break your brain! And thus...

"Essential Classic X-Men Vol. 1" was bought! I got it for Ł12 incl. shipping from Amazon UK. Ł12 for an omnibus with 528 pages? Not bad. I namely decided to follow the list of trade paperbacks here: list. Trying to figure out any other list was seriously making my eyes spin in their sockets.

This is a pic from "House of M" - and it gives me FEELINGS! Why is it always Charles who dies on Erik time and time and time again in comic books, movies, animated series...? It's so incredibly sad to see Erik mourn Charles.

From the upcoming - or maybe the latest? - "Avengers vs. X-Men"...

Taken from CBM. I apologize for the weird cut but the rest of the scan could be seen as spoilery.

Charles and Erik, they make me so happy. And so sad. It's such a waste that they couldn't resolve their differences and ended up on opposite sides... They could've been so happy.

WTF?

So, Marvel plans to publish yet another X-Men off-shoot, a comic book series, I mean. What will it be about? It will reveal that not CHARLES but WOLVERINE assembled the first mutant team. WTF?! Seriously, what the fuckity fuck?!

A new five issue limited series this August will reveal that it was in fact Wolverine who assembled the first team of mutants in the Marvel Universe. Written by Christos Gage and with art from Neal Adams, The First X-Men takes place before X-Men #1 and it sees Logan attempt to recruit both Xavier (who turns him down) AND Magneto to his team. Rather than a school, Logan will put together a team of soldiers which includes Sabretooth, Magneto, Bomb and a new female character. The series is set firmly in continuity and will feature a cameo from Namor the Sub-Mariner before he regained his memory in the pages of Fantastic Four. So, the first mutant team was put together by Wolverine (who Adams strongly hinted funded the X-Men). And who said Marvel was running out of ideas? Oh... Link.

And comic book nerds complained about how XMFC changed the X-Men history! So, first Charles was the strongest telepath - then Jean was better. He was the one who assembled the first team of mutants - and now it was Wolverine? And Magneto - MAGNETO - will work for Wolverine? ARE THEY FOR REAL?! Why not erase Charles completely from the storyline or make him just a figment of the X-Men's imagination? Grrr!

I'm sick and tired of Wolverine - he's everywhere these days, like a fungus - because he has become the Marty Sue of X-Men. What's next? Will he start shooting rainbows out of his ass too?

"Excalibur Vol. 1: Forging The Sword" by Chris Claremont

4 stars out of 5

Art: Aaron Lopresti's art is really pretty, especially the female characters - the pictures are sexy without being lewd and all of them are distinct, not carbon copies of each other. 5 stars.

Story: I was so happy to find a story about Charles and Erik! As much as I like Wolverine, Cyclops or Jean Grey, I don't have to have every X-Men book about them, really, it gets tiresome. And Charles and Erik, their differences and friendship, are so interesting! It's too sad that more comic books don't focus on them. It was interesting to see Charles so disillusioned with humans which brought him closer to Erik. I also loved Erik's admittance that, even after everything that happened, Charles was still his friend. Also: There are some very funny parts! 4 stars.

"Captain America: Red Menace" by Ed Brubaker

3 stars out of 5

Art: Several artists worked on this collection. Perkins' and Epting's art was top notch, as always. But I didn't really like Pulido's and Martin's art, it was very retro, though I understood why it was used for the flashback. Nonetheless, it felt a bit jarring, the transition between the styles. 4 stars.

Story: The last third of the book was amazing, full of action and great heroes, both male and female, kicking butt. But! The first two thirds? Slow, oh so slow. Too much time and space given to Lukin/Red Skull and Crossbones and Sin, a lot of talk and not enough action. I wanted to see the Cap going after Bucky, an intriguing cat and mouse game, what I got was the Red Skull plotting and cackling madly in the background. He's mad, Lukin is untouchable, we get it, Mr. Brubaker, move on! 2 stars.

"Captain America: Winter Soldier" by Ed Brubaker

4 stars out of 5

Art: Four different artists are featured in this omnibus, but I liked Steve Epting's art best, even though all his characters look really rough and old. 4 stars.

Story: All the stories seemed rather depressing, at least to me. Steve's loneliness and weariness, the Winter Soldier's story, the Nomad's descent into madness and subsequent death... I liked the 2nd half of the book better, the Cap's hunt for the Winter Soldier, the revelation of his identity, Sam (Falcon) and Tony's (Iron Man) help... It definitely opened many interesting avenues that could be followed in the future. 4 stars.

"Green Lantern: Rebirth"

4.5 stars out of 5

Art: Ethan Van Sciver's drawings are flawless. So many details beautifully drawn! Definitely 5 stars material.

Story: Written by Geoff Johns, the story of Hal Jordan's redemption. For a newbie like me it was slightly confusing here and there because it delved deeply into the GL mythology, but it made me really care about the characters, it made me want to learn more about them and find out what happened to them next. 4 stars!

End-result: I would say this comic book presents the perfect entry point for someone who has never read GL before because it's basically a reboot of the whole franchise.
katikat: (woman-laptop-phone)
I wanted to go and see Green Lantern this weekend - alas, the twins can't go, so no GL for me. Oh well, it's not that I was dying to see it *shrugs*

I've been spending my evenings listening to an audiobook, Kevin Hearne's "Hounded", first in the "Iron Druid" urban fantasy series. It's quite hilarious.

I got really miffed at the fandom in general yesterday. All bitching and moaning, hijacking threads and comments to stage petty wars. Seriously, I want to crawl inside some old or obscure fandom and pull the door shut behind me so that I can actually enjoy it in peace without having to stumble across these pissing contests!

I ordered a B-day gift for myself. My B-day isn't till next month but since I had the money and Amazon was giving me the "only so-and-so many in stock, order now!" notifications, I ordered all the remaining volumes in the "xxxHolic" and "Tsubasa Chronicles" series and "Green Lantern: Rebirth".

I wonder what to watch next, Geraldine McEwan's Marple, Idris Elba's Luther S1 or Kenneth Branagh's Wallander. Just something I can enjoy in peace for what it is without needing to pussyfoot around people with "issues".
katikat: (thor)
As you know, I liked the movie Thor better than Captain America - but I'm more interested in the "Captain America" comic books than in "Thor", go figure. I decided to give "Captain America" a try since the latest storyline seems kinda, sorta awesome, Vol. 5 by Ed Brubaker starting with "Winter Soldier". But I need to hurry up because there are only a few pieces available of each of the books on Amazon.

Also, my knowledgeable, lovely geeks, if I wanted to try reading "X-Men", where should I start? I mean, the "X-Men" universe is HUGE. What arc would be interesting and self-contained enough for me to get what's going on? I would like to buy it and read it in paper form because I realized that - just like with scanlations of Japanese manga - I enjoy it much better when I actually hold the book in my hands than when it's a downloaded scan. Downloads are good for sampling.

So far, the best comic book I've read was "Red Robin" where Robin and Ra's Al Ghul are trying to find out what happened to Batman. What's the best comic book you've ever read?

"Tron: Betrayal" by Jai Nitz

3 stars out of 5

Artwork: Amazing. Very similar to the movie, it really felt like a different world! 5 stars.

Story: Kind of boring, to be honest. It took place between Tron and Tron: Legacy, it set up the second movie, it told us why Clu had decided to destroy the ISOs in the first places, yet... Yet it felt shallow, too much stuff cramped into 100+ pages. And honestly? After reading it, I found Clu more likable than Flynn because Flynn wanted it all - a company, a wife, a kid, a world of his own - and messed up everything. He was never there when he was needed and little by little, everybody lost their faith in him, until only Tron remained by his side. This comic book made me wonder if Flynn ever had it in him to be a leader or if he had always been an unrealistic dreamer for whose shortcomings everybody had to pay the price. 2 stars.

This? Must be the creepiest Batman pic ever O.O *iz afraid*

Synopsis... )

Art by Ramon Bachs: Great action sequences and vibrant pictures. The only weak point, for me that is, are the faces of the characters: their features are very rough, not sharp enough, not... well, pretty enough, to be honest.

Story by Christopher Yost: Fascinating story, well written and perfectly interconnected, not told in a linear way, but every scene has its own place. It's a character piece and at the same time, there's a large picture that you don't see until you have all the pieces.

I'm loving this story of Tim Wayne, formerly known as Tim Drake. He has lost everything: his father is dead, his best friend Conner aka Superboy is dead, Bruce aka Batman - Tim's adoptive father - is dead and he has lost his status as Robin to Damien Wayne, an obnoxious brat that Dick, the new Batman, chose as his Robin. Tim's the only one who believes that Bruce is still alive, somewhere, but his friends think he needs psychiatric help, that he lost it after Bruce died. And consider the irony - the only one who believes him is Ra's al Ghul and his League of Assassins that Tim ends up leading against the Council of Spiders. Yes, for Tim, everything is about shades of grey these days...

Comic books

I'm falling hard for comic books - but I prefer DC Comics to Marvel. Batman or Superman seem much more appealing to me than, I don't know, Captain America. And out of the DC world, I love Gotham best - it's so dark and gloomy and creepy... Besides, if Bruce and Dick weren't "doing it" together at one point in their life, I'll eat my hat - even in the "Nightwing & Huntress" comic book, Oracle told Nightwing that he wanted to sleep with Huntress because she reminded him of Batman...

But the thing is, when you pick up a comic book, you need to do some reading first and find out what happened before, because there's no way to read ~everything~ that was published in the past - Batman comic books are up to 650+ issues, sheesh. Like, I picked up "Green Lantern: Rebirth" but I needed to find out why was Hal Jordan actually dead in the first place XP

Synopsis... )

Art by Bill Sienkiewicz & Greg Land: Simply beautiful. Really top notch stuff. That's what a comic book should look like. I was smitten.

Story by Devin Grayson: The parts about the bad guys didn't interest me all that much, but the rest made up for it. I loved the banter between Nightwing and Huntress and then later on between Nightwing and Oracle. The part with Dick in Helena's apartment was hilarious. And the one dream scene with Batman made me laugh out loud. I loved the balance between the plot and the personal stuff, it made the story richer.

All in all, I liked it a lot. Especially the art made the comic book for me!

Synopsis... )

Art by Lee Bermejo: Beautiful art, very intriguing drawings. The style reminded me of colored photographs, rather life-like, it definitely catches your interest right away.

Story by Brian Azzarello: Well. This story should've told us more about Lex Luthor, about how his mind worked, what drove him. Unfortunately, even though I understood his point of view, the story made me hate him even more. He let a bomber kill over 80 children, he let a good friend and his whole family die, he killed the woman who was in love with him - just to prove a point. I'm sorry, but if this story should've made Lex appear sympathetic, it failed. He insisted that he did everything for the good of humanity, but all it did was make him look like a perverse egomaniac with a God complex. Another thing I noticed was, that instead of using Superman's usual acts and showing them from Lex's point of view, the author twisted not just Superman, he also made Bruce Wayne completely OOC. I recognized neither Superman nor Batman in the characters. Also, there was much empty space where Lex just rambled on and on and that slowed down the pace of the story considerably.

So, Amazon US is taking pre-orders for Batman: Under the Red Hood, you know, the animated movie with Jensen Ackles' voicing Red Hood?

Well, does it make me a geek that I'm actually considering buying this? I actually have three good reasons, you know?

a) I used to love the Batman animated series, though I hated the Batman Beyond one where Bruce Wayne was an old, rickety guy and the new Batman looked kinda ridiculous.
b) Jensen Ackles! \o/
c) I started reading comic books lately - right now, I'm reading "Lex Luthor: Man of Steel" - and I'm loving it...

Anyone else considering giving this one a go?

Man, I feel geeky! And I'm lovin' it! *dances*

ETA: Man, I love this vid: Andrea Romano talks about Jensen's work on the movie!
katikat: (Default)
Batman finds a deadly virus in Outer Mongolia and gets infected. Nightwing has to rescue him. And all that happens on the anniversary of Dick's parents' death.

Story by Kelley Puckett: Pathetic, bordering on laughable. Seriously, I don't expect Shakespeare, readable is enough. But this was so bad that I actually snickered in places.

Art by Toby Cypress: Hideously ugly. Sometimes, you don't even know what's happening. The drawings look like the work of a seriously mentally disturbed person. Atrocious!

Conclusion: Avoid, avoid, avoid! I could barely finish it and I'm throwing it away. How could these two people get their work published with DC Comics is totally beyond me. Someone should be fired for getting it printed!
