I've been doing some reading on the "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" policy the American military forces have and I must say that I'm thoroughly disappointed by the American government. Did you know that out of the 25 countries that participate militarily in NATO, only three of them expressively forbid openly gay people to serve in their military forces? Guess what, it's the USA, Russia and China. The US should really take example from other countries:

Israel: "The Israel Defense Forces policies allow for gay men and lesbians to serve openly without discrimination or harassment due to actual or perceived sexual orientation. Moreover, gays in the IDF have special rights, such as the right to take a shower alone if they want to."

Canada: "On October 27th, 1992, protocol officer Michelle Douglas won a suit against the Canadian Forces for discrimination that had forced her resignation. Subsequently, Canada's official policy toward gay men and women in uniform has been one of non-discrimination.
A series of provincial and territorial Supreme Court decisions beginning in the summer of 2003 ruled in favour of the legality of gay marriage, and a national law to that effect was passed by Canada's parliament in the summer of 2005 by the Paul Martin Liberal government. In May of 2005, the Canada's first military gay wedding took place at Nova Scotia's Canadian Forces Base Greenwood. Officials described the ceremony as low-key but touching. A similar wedding has since taken place between two male Royal Canadian Mounted Police officers."

United Kingdom: "The United Kingdom's policy is to allow gay men and lesbians to serve openly and discrimination on a sexual orientation basis is forbidden. It is also forbidden for someone to pressure LGBT people to come out. All personnel are subject to the same "no-touching" rules."

I knew NZ had an anti-discriminatory policy of some sort and your post inspired me to go look. I cant find the wording of the policy, but I did find this:
New Zealand Defence Force
Following a gender integration audit in 1998 the New Zealand Defence Force (NZDF) has undertaken human rights education of both its military and civilian personnel. {..} focused on equal employment opportunity and the elimination of discrimination and harassment {...} Two branches of the NZDF - the Royal New Zealand Air Force and the Royal New Zealand Navy - have won EEO Trust Work and Life Awards for their initiatives. In addition, the NZDF {...} has also introduced anti-homophobia training.

I just don't get how a country like the US that basically calls itself the paramount of freedom and democracy can be so discriminating. It makes me so frustrated *sigh*

Pretty sure we haven't had any civil unions (NZ gay marriage) in the military yet. However, three serving gay politicians have married their partners in the 3+ years since the law came in so that cant be a bad thing

Yeah. We suck. But we're making some headway. There's gonna be another vote on legalizing gay marriage in California soon. And there are more suits against being discriminated against for being out in the military. The issue has been talked about more often lately, even appearing on Boston Legal.

It makes me so... frustrated and sad that there are still people who are so biggoted. I mean, it doesn't matter with whom you sleep as long as you do your job properly, right? Sheesh *sigh*

I'm very glad that the UK has changed its policy on homosexuals serving in the military *nodnod*! It is shocking about America though, like you say, they do hold themselves up as judge and jury on everyone else so surely they should be ahead of the game!

Yes, I was quite shocked when I read about the US policy. I mean, what does the soldiers' sexuality have to do with their performance in field?

Exactly, if anything if you are fighting with people you care about, it would make you even more determined to win to protect them, surely?
