What a Perfect Choice!

DeForest Kelley vs. Karl Urban as Star Trek's Leonard 'Bones' McCoy! What a perfect choice, wasn't it?
I also got my hands on the Star Trek Into Darkness novel by Alan Dean Foster and so far, I'm loving it. The snark between Kirk and Bones while they run through the red forest is hilarious!
And you know what? Since the 2009 movie, when I read the ST:TOS tie-ins - very good books, BTW - I see the present actors in the roles, not the old ones. Because, as wonderful and intriguing as the old show was - and it really was the best ST - the acting was atrocious, especially William Shatner's. Chris Pine is so much better!

Sheriff Jack Carter
He's the only normal person in the whole nutty town. Instead of overthinking things, he goes back to the basics. A computer is threatening to blow up the whole town and we can't overwrite his programming or hack it or anything? Well, why don't we just, I don't know, unplug it? I just adore his dry, down-to-earth humor.
Runner-ups: Henry Deacon, Jo Lupo

NCIS Special Agent G Callen
I have a weakness for Chris O'Donnell, that's one thing. But mostly, it's because Callen is a woobie and Sam Hanna, his partner and best friend, is so protective of him! Yes, I adore that.
Runner-ups: Hetty Lang, Sam Hanna

Sheldon Cooper
It's Sheldon! He can insult you in such a smart way that you might not even notice. He's definitely the highlight of the series. I especially loved all the scenes he had with Leonard's mom!
Runner-ups: Leonard Hofstadter, Beverly Hofstadter

Dr. Leonard "Bones" McCoy
Be it the old show or the new reboot, I love Bones - though I do prefer Karl Urban's Bones, he's HOT! His wit, his dry snarks, the way he always bristles like a cat when he doesn't like something or he thinks he's dealing with an idiot... LOL!
Runner-ups: Cpt. James T. Kirk, Spock
(Other ST shows? ST:TNG - William Riker; ST:DS9 - Julian Bashir; ST:Voy - Chakotay; ST:E - Charles "Trip" Tucker)

Jan. 13th, 2011 11:00 pmThe Alternative Factor: That. Was. AWFUL. Wow. It dragged on and on, the guest star's acting was painful to watch and even Kirk behaved totally OOC, disregarding everything Spock and McCoy told him as a... joke! WTF?! Never again, this episode. NEVER AGAIN!
The City on the Edge of Forever: Loved it. Especially Kirk teasing Spock about his... inability to build a computer from what was available in the 1930s. Ha! Also, Joan Collins! Man, she was beautiful... *_* And I felt so sorry for both Kirk and Bones, they both liked Edith a LOT!
Operation - Annihilate!: Excellent episode. I found it interesting that Kirk was more upset about the possibility of losing Spock than about his own brother's death. And I felt so sorry for Bones, when he realized that he hadn't had to use so strong a light, that Spock didn't have to go blind. The look Kirk gave him. Ouch! But then, when Kirk actually let it simmer, he realized that it really wasn't Bones' fault - but then, the damage was done. Man, I think that if Spock hadn't healed on his own, McCoy would've never forgiven himself...
And I'm done with Season 1 *throws confetti* What I loved most about it? That the cast was big but most stories focused on Kirk, Spock and Bones, that was what I really liked. I'm no fan of huge casts where, in the end, no character has enough time on-screen.
My favorite episodes of season 1?
Gold: The Corbomite Maneuver
Silver: Balance of Terror
Bronze: Operation - Annihilate!
I know that there are several specials on the DVD but I opted for not watching them. I'm content with not breaking the 4th wall here and not knowing more about what was going on behind the curtain...
And! I found out that eBooks.com carries over 120 ST:TOS tie-ins! *rolls in the pretty*

Jan. 12th, 2011 10:38 pmBoth episodes had a great concept and actually made the viewers think without losing the sense of adventure...
The Devil in the Dark: My favorite scene was the one where Kirk and Spock talked about the chances of the both of them getting killed down in the tunnels. Kirk's expression, LOL! And then how pleased McCoy was when he managed to "fix" the creature, that was pretty funny :P
Errand of Mercy: I respected the Organians' opinions and way of life, but honestly, the whole conflict could've been avoided if they had just told Kirk the truth from the get-go. On the other hand, they wouldn't have stopped the war, right? So...
I have NCIS and NCIS:LA waiting for me on my HDD but, as much as I adore these shows, I want to finish watching ST:TOS first. Only 3 episodes to go and I'm done with S1!

Jan. 10th, 2011 11:19 pmA Taste of Armageddon: What an annoying guy, that ambassador. I hate politicians. It's the same way with the IOA on SG-1/SGA. But the ep told an interesting story. I mean, how easy it is to lead a war when you actually don't see the killing and destruction in the first place? I liked that Vulcan telepathy trick that Spock used. And Scotty was A-awesome in this one!
This Side of Paradise: Hehe, alien plants. That's the ep that spoofed many fanfics in many fandoms to come, I bet :P I felt actually sorry for Spock, when he said that for the first time in his life, he had been happy... But I LOL'd at Kirk's expression when he saw Spock hanging from that tree like a monkey, ha!
I like the friendship between Kirk and Spock more and more with every ep, the gentle ribbing. I still don't see anything slashy about it, but in a perfectly gen way, it's amazing. Watching the show, it gives me a new understanding of the characters and I now can't wait to read more tie-ins!

Jan. 9th, 2011 10:33 pmThese two eps didn't really click for me, don't know why *shrugs*
The Return of the Archons: Best part of the episode? Spock in that black hood. Man, he looked stunning! And Kirk's fisticuffs with McCoy.
Space Seed: Ah, Ricardo Montalban as Khan. I loved the scene where Khan threatened McCoy with a scalpel and McCoy didn't even blink, just took it and told Khan to aim for the artery. Wow, that was cool! And Kirk in the decomp chamber reminded me of SGA's Common Ground where Kolya tortured John to force Elizabeth to hand over their guns. But Kirk's decision to leave them stranded on that planet - I think it should come back and bite them in the ass. To let a tyrant loose...

Jan. 8th, 2011 10:16 pmTomorrow Is Yesterday: That was a LOL'tastic episode, the funniest ep so far. It was so hilarious, everything, from the... "affectionate" computer to Kirk's interrogation and his "Believe me, you wouldn't believe me", hehe! Man, I haven't laughed so hard in a long time. When Spock said, "[the computer] has an unfortunate tendency to giggle," I literally had to stop the DVD, I LOL'd so hard. That was AMAZING!
Court Martial: Not a bad episode but slightly... slow, the court part, I mean. But I loved the fact that Spock solved the whole thing by playing chess with the ship's computer. But, man, Finney was crazier than a bag full of squirrels, seriously!

Jan. 7th, 2011 10:44 pmThe Squire of Gothos: "Stop that nonsense at once or you'll not be permitted to make any more planets." LOL! That basically sums up the episode. But it was really interesting - the squire reminded me of Q. I love it when the crew goes and explores and meets strange new cultures. That's what's sci-fi is about for me.
Arena: The beginning was excellent. But then it went downhill. I thought that Kirk's relentless pursuit of the enemy ship was rather OOC - remember the fight with the Romulans? How he held back and, you know, THOUGHT IT THROUGH first? But here he was so completely gung-ho that he didn't even try to hail the ship. And then, on the planet - honestly, that green lizard was ridiculous and the fight between them really, really lame. I mean, I'm used to some things in this show looking... weird, I get it and I don't mind, but that was really over the top lame. And what's up with Kirk having a physical fight in every episode now?

Jan. 6th, 2011 11:18 pmYou know, I completely forgot how awesome it is to watch a show on DVD, when you don't have to wait a week or even longer for a new ep!
Shore Leave: This pretty much sums up the whole episode...
LOL! I was wondering what the writers were smoking... XP
The Galileo Seven: Honestly, I was with Spock on this one. What does crying for the dead help when there's work to be done to save the living? But then, I'm not a sentimental person. IMHO, the dead don't care what happens to them anymore and I would not risk the lives of crew members just to bury someone. But the last scene was awesome, when the bridge crew teased Spock. And the remastered special effects of the fuel ignition were beautiful...
Shore Leave: This pretty much sums up the whole episode...
McCoy: On this supposedly... uninhabited planet, I just saw a large rabbit pull a gold watch from his vest and claim that he was late.
Kirk: That's pretty good, Bones. All right, I got one for you. The rabbit was followed by a little blond girl, right?
McCoy: As a matter of fact, yes. They disappeared through a hole in a hedge.

Jan. 5th, 2011 11:00 pmThe Conscience of the King: That one kept me guessing till the end. I didn't suspect the daughter at all. Man, she was crazier than a sack full of rabid weasels! Also, I really thought that Riley would die. And that's what the story of Tarsus IV was about. I've seen it mentioned in ST:Reboot fics before, but I had no idea what it was about. Oh, and I loved the little chat between Spock and McCoy in the infirmary, when Spock said that he did consider that Kirk might have had a thing for the girl, but he dismissed it. McCoy's "You would" made me LOL!
Balance of Terror: Excellent episode! I love it that there's this balance among Kirk, Spock and McCoy, they all bring different opinions to the table and then try to find a middle ground. I loved the little talks Kirk and McCoy had in this episode, especially the one where McCoy told Kirk he should not destroy himself. Also, that was a great space battle, it didn't even need amazing special effects, the suspense was enough. And another thing: knowing what Romulans looked like, it wasn't a surprise for me, but back then, it must've been a bit of a shock, this resemblance between Romulans and Vulcans...

Jan. 3rd, 2011 10:48 pmThe Menagerie 1+2: I know that this was basically a re-telling of the episode The Cage that took place before the show, but I have to say that it just felt way too dragged out and slow. I mean, it did keep me guessing about the hows and whys of Spock's reasoning, but overall... A bit meh considering it was written by Gene Roddenberry himself, I would've expected more. Besides, what Spock did was absolutely inexcusable and I can't believe that Kirk let it slide like that. I understand that Spock is his friend and he's making allowances for him, but this was a bit over the top, IMHO. Oh, and there was Nurse Chapel's actress as Number One in the old crew, hehe!

Jan. 2nd, 2011 10:38 pmI'm really getting into this series!
Dagger of the Mind: I had to laugh. Kirk refused to listen to McCoy, so McCoy got miffed and saddled Kirk with an ex-flame. LOL! That was a sweet revenge. And it was good to see a girl who actually could go and do stuff herself, not just wait for the rescue, even though she didn't know anything about force fields and stuff like that. But the best part? Spock's face when he found Kirk and the female doctor kissing. Spock's expression was priceless!
The Corbomite Maneuver: Hands down, the best episode yet! I loved smart!Kirk, the way he bluffed his way out of the situation and then broke Enterprise away from the tractor beam. I also loved the scenes between Kirk and McCoy and between Kirk and Spock. It was pitch perfect. And the fact that there actually was no bad guy in the end was the cherry on top. Loved the episode, LOVED IT!

Dec. 30th, 2010 11:18 pmI think that these two episodes are my favorite so far, mostly because of the planet exploration which I just love :)
What Are Little Girls Made Of?: Interesting concept. How many doubles will Kirk have during the run of the series? XD And the red-shirts keep dying... :P I like Nurse Chapel, she's a cool lady, but her dress is awful - that pointy bodice makes me LOL!
Miri: I know that Kirk didn't mean it that way when he told Miri she was beautiful but, yikes, it made me uncomfortable. I mean, she still was a kid, after all. Also, those children were so creepy, crazy creepy. How do you reason with a 300-year-old kid?
But now I have a ST:Reboot related question. Is McCoy's daughter Joanna reboot canon? Was she mentioned in the movie? I know that McCoy raved about his nutso ex-wife but did he ever mention a kid? Or are fanfic writers simply mixing Reboot and ST:TOS? I don't remember him ever talking about Joanna, so I was really surprised to see her playing a big part in most fics focused on McCoy...

Dec. 29th, 2010 11:25 pmThe Enemy Within: Kirk split in two. Ha! And again, Kirk and Rand. I thought that Kirk should've stepped down as the ship's captain as soon as they found out about his double because it was obvious he was unfit for duty. Oh, and I loved the small, horned beastie, so cute!
Mudd's Women: Uh, the first half of the episode made me highly uncomfortable, what with the men getting a hard-on for those women. I hate it when guys start thinking with their downstairs brain when they see a pretty face :/ I guess I'm not used to shows treating women as plain sex objects anymore, which is good, I think. But I did like the second half with Eve and the pill and her giving that guy a tongue lashing about what he actually wanted: a strong woman to stand by his side or a doll. That was cool.

Dec. 28th, 2010 10:18 pmYou know, I realized that because the eps are all 48 min. long, they seem just... too long. If they cut out the 8 mins., I think the eps would be much stronger and faster, not as... dragged out, I guess.
Where No Man Has Gone Before: IIRC, this episode was the first one filmed, that's why the uniforms were different - I liked them better, though - and there was no McCoy in it. Too bad that it followed Charlie X directly, the two episodes were just too similar. And the fight between the telepaths on the planet? Wow, that was some very bad acting, ouch! But I liked the darker plot: Could you kill your friend to save him from turning evil?
The Naked Time: I think that in this ep it was most noticeable that the eps were just too long. I mean, Sulu running half-naked around the ship - nice body, though *_* - or the guy singing in the engine room? So unnecessary. It felt... too long. And Kirk is in love with that Yeoman Janice Rand? Hm... I do like Janice though :)

Dec. 27th, 2010 10:25 pmI got the whole ST:TOS series on DVD for Xmas - two seasons I bought for myself, one I got from
yami_tai ::smish:: - so I thought I should finally watch it!
The Man Trap: Loved the scene where Kirk called McCoy "Plum, err, doctor McCoy" XD And I also loved that Kirk told McCoy not to think with his glands, ha! Because yeah, that was some dumb behavior, doctor McCoy.
Charlie X: Oh my gosh, that boy creeped the heck outta me! O.o Can you imagine ending up in the hands of someone that crazy? Yikes!
I really like Kirk. He seems very... I don't know how to describe it. I just really like him, the way he always tries to do his best, the way he likes his ship and his crew, how he cares about them.
Another thing I like? McCoy and Spock bickering - to Kirk's amusement.

What I bought today...
Oct. 21st, 2010 10:32 amAmazon US dropped the price of Supernatural S5 50% - it's down to $29.99 at the moment - so off in the basket it went, together with Eureka S3.5 which is down to $17.99 (40%). I plan to buy S3.0 from Amazon UK because there, it's even cheaper.
Also, I bought "Cadet Kirk" by Diane Carey, a ST:TOS prequel book. Sounded interesting.
And another also, I'm thinking of buying ST:TOS on DVD. I haven't seen the show yet. Would peeps who did see it recommend it to me? Amazon UK has it for £15.49 a season only, the remastered version. So... It could be a nice Xmas gift to myself.

Musings on Star Trek
Jul. 12th, 2009 08:20 pmI've never seen any of the Star Trek shows in its entirety. Living in Central Europe, we had to wait years for new eps and one loses interest quickly thanks to that.
ST:TOS -> I've never seen the original series. Not even one ep. I did see some of the movies, though. But the series? Nope.
ST:TNG -> Ah, the series that I grew up with. I crushed so hard on Riker! He and Diana Troi are my OTP for this show and I started to lose interest fast once they turned their ship into a Riker-Troi-Worf triangle. I'm glad that they got together in the end, though :)
ST:DS9 -> Not my type of a show. The station was really dark and... metallic. The plot - too much about politics. I loved Dr. Julian Bashir, though. When his past and abilities were revealed, I squeed! But to be honest, I watched for his friendship with O'Brien. The rest of the characters didn't interest me much.
ST:V -> I fell hard for this show. Chakotay was my man, must've been the tattoo ;P I loved him and Janeway as a couple, but he and Seven of Nine? HOT! Like sizzling hot. What a great idea, these two together. Too bad that it wasn't explored more.
ST:E -> The most likable crew of all the shows, definitely. And Trip, Trip was simply cuddly! I was so pissed when they killed him off in the last ep. But! Then I learned about the official tie-in set directly after the show's finale. "The Good That Men Do" fixes the whole mess and twists Trip's death into a really awesome thing! So happy here.
ST: Movie -> Loved it! Like a lot 8)
You know, I'm a slasher at heart but in these shows, I shipped the characters in a very het way: Riker/Troi, Chakotay/Seven, Trip/T'Pol...
There's only one slash pairing in the ST series for me: Garak/Bashir. Those two... Wow! And Kirk/Bones in the new movie, of course, but that's another thing entirely... 8)
