I was surprised when the season ended with just another episode, not with a big bang or with a cliffhanger as we are used seeing today. It was somehow... weird.

When I watched the show as a kid, I really adored Chakotay. Now, I still like him, but I adore Janeway. I admit that I might have skipped a scene or two that focused too much on other crew members to get to her scenes. I really love it when she's a smart bad-ass of a woman. Like with this quote from the episode State of Flux:

"You know, I'm really easy to get along with most of the time, but I don't like bullies and I don't like threats, and I don't like you, Culluh. You can try and stop us from getting to the truth but I promise you that if you do I will respond with all the 'unique technologies' at my command."

You go, girl! Here's a woman in a leadership position who is NOT A BITCH! These days, it feels like women in charge have to be bitchy, always aggravated and demeaning everybody in sight - especially men. See Gates in Castle. And sayings like "Bitches get things done" really don't help. No, you don't have to be a bitch to get stuff done. You don't win anybody's respect by being a bitch, they just hate you for it and stab you in the back at the first occasion. Why can't there be more women like Pam Landy in the Bourne trilogy? Or Hetty Lang in NCIS:LA? So yeah, that's why Janeway is such a hero for me!

My favorite episodes are those where they encounter unknown entities. Like in Heroes and Demons and Cathexis. I love it that in this show, not all aliens have to be humanoid. That's awesome.

As far as philosophical episodes go, I liked Jetrel best. It was basically Oppenheimer and his nuclear bomb, just set in the Gama Quadrant. And for once, I didn't find Neelix annoying. I know that he's the comic relief but mostly, he isn't funny, he's simply irksome. And let's not even talk about his way too possessive relationship with Kes. Uh. Never understood the pairing.

And I'm done with S1! It's the only season I have got. I do own the whole of ST:TOS (I've seen only the first season so far) and ST:E, though. So... But I guess I will choose something action driven next. I'm an action!girl - which is why, even though I love Star Trek, SG-1/SGA will always be my favorite sci-fi shows.

Nice episodes, especially their message. 109 was about a culture that thought they knew what happened after death. 110 was about the Prime Directive - used by an alien culture against the Voyager crew. Interesting concepts, stuff that made me think.

For me, it wasn't about the episodes themselves, about the happenings, though, what really got to me were the fall-outs. In 109, it was the conversation Janeway had with Harry Kim about what happened to him and about what actually happens after death. In 110, it was the confrontation between Torres and Tuvok on the one side and Janeway on the other about what they did, how they betrayed her trust. Ouch.

On a shallow note - Harry Kim is so pretty *_*

You know, these episodes were... quite boring. Oh, I liked the one where they were trapped in a cloud seeing Voyager trapped in a cloud - aptly called The Cloud - that one was great and really original. But the rest... Organ stealing? Paris accused of murder? The one with the wormhole and the Romulan scientist? I mean...

I don't mind that they are always okay, that nothing has a lasting effect, I prefer knowing that characters will survive. What I do mind is when they get into trouble because of their own stupidity or recklessness - see Neelix in Phage or Paris in Ex Post Facto. And the one with the wormhole - of course they wouldn't get back, it was just the 7th episode! So, it was like watching a train wreck, waiting for the whole thing to go wrong. And I really don't like episode like that.

Also, I like Janeway and Chakotay, those two are awesome. But the rest? They are either bland - Tuvok and Kim - or downright annoying - Neelix and Paris. So, it's really hard for me to actually care when the ep is focused on anyone but Janeway and Chakotay.

Or maybe I'm just not in the mood and I'm making myself miserable watching something I'm not in the mood for. That's also possible. I think I will postpone watching this until I actually feel like watching Star Trek. It would be a shame to ruin my experience.

Gosh, why can't there be more awesome female characters like Janeway in today's TV? This is a woman in charge who isn't an arrogant bitch who needs to put down everybody around and especially men to prove she deserves her post. This is a woman who knows that she's in charge because she deserves to be in charge, because she's smart enough and strong enough and brave enough - and she does not need to prove it to anybody. I miss women like that in today's TV. I think only Hetty from NCIS:LA comes anywhere close to Janeway's awesomeness!

I also still love Chakotay very, very much. There's just something about him, about his demeanor... it's incredibly soothing. His smile, his quiet voice. He feels very... safe to me. I don't know if it's the character or Robert Beltran's charisma, it's just is so.

And the funniest part? The Doctor. LOL, I love his sharp tongue!

Also this is how I hoped SGA would go, at the beginning. Yes, Voyager does manage to contact home in the end, but they are on their own, they remain on their own. They fight their own battles... In SGA, they just established a wormhole home and it was the same old, same old storytelling that we've seen in SG-1 before. And even in SGU, the writers weren't able to cut the proverbial umbilical cord with Earth. When you then read SGA stories like "Retrograde" by Martha Wilson, your heart breaks for what might have been if writers with real imagination had taken over. Instead, we got episodes like Trio or Brainstorm *sigh*

But back to ST:V. I need to check if I have got any tie-in novels. So far, I've read only ST:TOS or ST:TNG books. Might be time to expand my horizons.

Day 8: A pairing only you seem to like

Seven of Nine and Chakotay, Star Trek: Voyager

I loved Chakotay with Janeway, I really did. I have no idea why the writers dropped that pairing. But! There was something really appealing about Seven and Chakotay. Maybe because she had a hard time dealing with emotions and he, despite being a man and a leader - you know, the stereotype for a "macho" - was much more empathetic than half the women on the show. It's just too bad that the writers didn't get them together until the very last season. They could've been really interesting to follow.

Remaining days cut! )

Tony&EJ in NCIS: Yes, I love Tony and Ziva but if Tony couldn't get her, I would love him to end up with EJ. She's the first woman for whom Tony defied Gibbs, the first woman who went toe to toe with Gibbs for him and stood her ground. The scene in the showers, where Tony went to her and they just talked while she showered, is one of my favorite Tony scenes ever.

Willow&Kennedy in Buffy: I was never a fan of Tara. Her spaced out hippie look annoyed me to no end. Kennedy was energetic and she knew what she wanted, Willow. And she went after her with the power of a steamroller. I thought it was awesome.

Seven of Nine and Chakotay in ST: Voyager: Yes, I liked Chakotay with Janeway but there was just something so appealing about him and Seven. Not only were they gorgeous together, I also liked that for once, it was the man who was gentle, warm and open and the woman who was cold, restrained and out of touch with her emotions. Lovely. Too bad the tie-in novels broke them up, as I heard.

Another question, peeps. Was there a canon couple that you personally loved but the fandom in general hated? A couple for which you went against the stream?

For me, it was Chakotay and Seven-Of-Nine from Star Trek: Voyager. Man, I loved those two together! There was something very appealing about them as a couple. I know that fandom disliked this pairing and wanted Chakotay to get together with Janeway, but man, I ate it with a spoon!

Oh, and a bonus couple: Willow and Kennedy. I never liked Tara. She was this... hippie chick for me and I don't like hippies; don't ask me why, I just don't. Willow and Tara did nothing for me. But Willow and Kennedy... Yummy! The way Kennedy relentlessly pursued Willow... Loved it.

What about you?

I've never seen any of the Star Trek shows in its entirety. Living in Central Europe, we had to wait years for new eps and one loses interest quickly thanks to that.

ST:TOS -> I've never seen the original series. Not even one ep. I did see some of the movies, though. But the series? Nope.

ST:TNG -> Ah, the series that I grew up with. I crushed so hard on Riker! He and Diana Troi are my OTP for this show and I started to lose interest fast once they turned their ship into a Riker-Troi-Worf triangle. I'm glad that they got together in the end, though :)

ST:DS9 -> Not my type of a show. The station was really dark and... metallic. The plot - too much about politics. I loved Dr. Julian Bashir, though. When his past and abilities were revealed, I squeed! But to be honest, I watched for his friendship with O'Brien. The rest of the characters didn't interest me much.

ST:V -> I fell hard for this show. Chakotay was my man, must've been the tattoo ;P I loved him and Janeway as a couple, but he and Seven of Nine? HOT! Like sizzling hot. What a great idea, these two together. Too bad that it wasn't explored more.

ST:E -> The most likable crew of all the shows, definitely. And Trip, Trip was simply cuddly! I was so pissed when they killed him off in the last ep. But! Then I learned about the official tie-in set directly after the show's finale. "The Good That Men Do" fixes the whole mess and twists Trip's death into a really awesome thing! So happy here.

ST: Movie -> Loved it! Like a lot 8)

You know, I'm a slasher at heart but in these shows, I shipped the characters in a very het way: Riker/Troi, Chakotay/Seven, Trip/T'Pol...

There's only one slash pairing in the ST series for me: Garak/Bashir. Those two... Wow! And Kirk/Bones in the new movie, of course, but that's another thing entirely... 8)
