Of Shows

By now, I have hundreds of episodes of various shows downloaded that I haven't seen yet. Since Teen Wolf, I basically live and breathe TW. Yup, the season was THAT good.

One thing I have noticed this year regarding shows in general and the newbies in particular: an INCREDIBLY SLOW START. Like snail pace and awful shipping and generally boring material that cost several shows their viewership. Look at...

Almost Human: canned.

Agents of SHIELD: it started with 4.0+ ratings and now it's down to 1.8! It will be renewed because ABC is a part of the Disney network - but how can you lose 2.0+ demo points within 20 episodes with a material like FRICKIN' MARVEL?

Tomorrow People: it started with 1.0 demo and its last episode of the season - and almost certainly of the series - was 0.4. But then, it was executed by Julie Plec, she of The Vampire Diaries fame who is a huge fan of love triangles, so instead of focusing on the action, ULTRA vs. the Tomorrow People, from the get-go, it was all about who slept with whom etc. SERIOUSLY?!

And it doesn't matter how good the show becomes around episode 16 or whenever when by then most of its audience has fled in boredom! See SGU as another - expensive - example of a catastrophic failure. But the execs are incorrigible. They make the same mistake again and again and again, like they have blinders on their eyes or something...

Fox just canceled Almost Human. Poor Karl Urban and Michael Ealy, they just can't catch a break.

Though I'm not surprised. Instead of hitting the ground running, the writers really fumbled it up. I know that Fox aired the episodes out of order so that the arcs made little sense, but even the episodic plots seemed boring to me. And I rooted for the show so much :( Oh well...

I think the writers really dropped the ball on this one. They have an excellent cast, great characters, amazing special effects... just the stories aren't that good. And it's too bad because the show's rating is dropping like a stone. The latest was 1.6 demo, that's cancel material on Fox :( So, I guess I will enjoy the show while it lasts, mostly because of the character potential. And hope for some great fanfictions. There are already 196 stories on AO3, after just 6 episodes because the potential really is that good.

I think my favorite part of the show is John and Dorian's banter. They bicker but it's really sweet, not... acerbic, simply sweet. And that's lovely. Because you see just how much John likes Dorian. He actually thinks of Dorian's feelings, lets himself be talked into things by him... And that's really lovely. I really hope that, before the show is canned, might be potentially spoilery! )

Return date: Jan. 6 2014!

At this moment, the characters are all that keeps me going. Because, yes, the characters are amazing. John, Dorian, Maldonado, Stahl, even Rudy... They are funny, likable and they have fantastic chemistry - and they deserve better storylines, honestly. So far, the writing has been average at best and I ffwd'd through some parts because, when John and Dorian aren't on the screen, bickering, it's... kinda boring.

Best parts? Spoilers! ) Basically, everything John and Dorian related.

I also hope that if wishes were horses... ) That would be all kinds of awesome, wouldn't it?

On another note, I bought some movies as a Xmas gift to myself: Underworld 3&4, Jack Reacher, Daybreakers, Hysteria and Wrath of the Titans. They had them all cheap...

Don't forget, people! TOMORROW ON FOX!
katikat: (actor-karlurban)

Gosh, cannot wait! I hope it's a hit - though I doubt it, it's a sci-fi on Fox, after all - because I need a regular dose of Karl Urban in my life!

Karl Urban is so incredibly sexy... *_* And now we will be having him on our screens every week! *_* I hope this is a hit, I really, really, really hope so!

Also, since I plan to sample at least 5 shows this fall, I decided to delegate a few oldies to DVD. I already did it with Psych (haven't seen any eps from S7) and now it's time for Grimm, Person of Interest and Castle. I have seen 1 ep from Grimm's S2 and it didn't really grip me. With Person of Interest, I haven't even started S2 yet. Not that I'm not interested, my plate's just too full. And Castle... the last ep I saw was 509, if I'm not mistaken. I just can't be bothered to catch up. So, DVDs it will be. Amazon UK usually drops the price to around 12-13Ł within a year after the box set's release.

I mean, I'm up-to-date with exactly 2 shows: Hannibal and NCIS:LA. And I would also like to watch some of the box sets that I own, like Babylon 5, Star Trek: TOS, Star Trek: Enterprise, The X-Files, Stargate SG-1, Leverage, Starsky & Hutch, The Professionals... I own all these shows in their entirety and I still haven't watched the DVDs, for Christ's sake. Something must be done about that! Not to mention the SCORES of movies on DVD.

Almost Human is a high-tech, high-stakes action drama set 35 years in the future, when police officers are partnered with highly evolved human-like androids. An unlikely partnership is forged when a part-machine cop (Urban) is forced to pair with a part-human robot (Ealy) as they fight crime and investigate a deeper cover-up in a futuristic new world.

Fox’s take: Meet JOHN KENNEX (Karl Urban), a cop who survived one of the most catastrophic attacks ever made against the police department. After waking up from a 17-month coma, he can’t remember much – except that his partner was killed; his girlfriend, ANNA MOORE (guest star Mekia Cox), left him after the attack; and he lost one of his legs and is now outfitted with a highly sophisticated synthetic appendage. Suffering from depression, mental atrophy, trauma-onset OCD, PTSD and the “psychological rejection of his synthetic body part,” John returns to work at the behest of longtime ally Captain SANDRA MALDONADO (Lili Taylor). By mandate, every cop must partner with a robot. And despite his passionate aversion to androids, John is paired up with a battle-ready MX-43. But he abruptly terminates his partnership after the robot discovers incriminating information about him. So technician RUDY LOM (Mackenzie Crook) introduces John to DORIAN (Ealy), a discontinued android with unexpected emotional responses. Although such responses were deemed flaws, it is in these “flaws” that John relates to Dorian most. After all, John is part-machine now, and Dorian is part-human. John and Dorian’s understanding of each other not only complements them, it connects them. As he adjusts to working with his new partner, John also must learn to get along with his new colleagues, including the eager and somewhat starstruck Detective VALERIE STAHL (Minka Kelly) and the distrustful Detective RICHARD PAUL (Michael Irby), who does not welcome John back with open arms. ALMOST HUMAN will follow the week-to-week missions of John and Dorian, as they fight crime across this futuristic landscape, while the mysteries surrounding his attack and the larger mythology of this new world unfold.

Peeps, PEEPS! CBS picked up Josh Holloway's Intelligence! Source. Yes, I know it sounds a bit like Chuck, a special agent with a chip in his head, but this will be action driven, not a comedy. This and Karl Urban's Almost Human are the two new shows I'm looking forward to most!

Folks! Folks! Fox gave a full season pick-up to JJ Abrams' new show Almost Human starring Karl Urban and Michael Ealy!!! EEEEEEEEE!

Almost Human (formerly known as Human, though apparently Almost Human is still only a working title) is the brainchild of former Fringe showrunner JH Wyman, and will be produced by Abrams’s Bad Robot production company. It stars Karl Urban, Michael Ealy and Lili Taylor in “an action-packed police drama set 35 years in the future, when police officers are partnered with highly evolved human-like androids. An unlikely connection is forged when a cop with an aversion to robots and a robot with unexpected emotional responses investigate cases in a brave new world.” Wyman, who wrote the pilot and serves as executive-produced by Wyman, along with JJ Abrams and Bryan Burk.
