I didn't expect much from this movie and I was pleasantly surprised. I would say that it's the best film in the trilogy of Wolverine movies. I'm not happy about the fact that it implied that all they've been through in XM: Apocalypse was basically for nothing, that they all ended up dead anyway, but... oh well. Considering how many timelines there are in the X-Men universe...

I really liked Laura. I usually don't like kids in movies, but Laura was amazing. And Dafne Keen, who played the part, was incredible. The action was brutal and bloody, and the amount of fucks and whatnot? Sheeeeesh! Overall, a really good movie!

So, last Saturday, I went to see both, Captain America: Civil War and X-Men: Apocalypse, and boy, was the slash strong in them! Stucky and Cherik rule, hands down! So much fanfic fodder!

Though I feel actually compelled to read - and write! - fanfics only for Cherik, go figure. I don't know why. I just felt that Charles, Erik and Raven went a wonderful full circle in this trilogy. And I loved that Erik always, ALWAY came through for Charles in the end, unlike in the first trilogy where Erik - because of Fox's meddling! - didn't give much of a fuck about Charles and always betrayed him in the end. Fassbender's Erik always went against Charles' wishes, AT FIRST, but when push came to shove and Erik had to choose between world domination/revenge and Charles' life, he always chose Charles. Always! Also, I really loved Charles, the Damsel in Distress, in XMA, LOL!

--> Apparently, Alan Tudyk has a tiny part in Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials. Who knew? Source.

--> There will be Jack Reacher 2 after all, it will start shooting later this year for a late 2016 release. Nice! Loved the first one. Source.

--> And there will also be Mission Impossible 6! And it's on a fast-track, to start shooting next year! Awesome! Loved 4 & 5! Source.

--> There will be a League of Extraordinary Gentlemen reboot and it will be female centric. Hm. Okay. Source.

--> Patrick Stewart's Professor X will be a part of Wolverine 3 and it won't be just a cameo but something juicier. NICE! Love me some Chuck! Source.

There's been a rumor going around that X-Men: Apocalypse won't be James McAvoy & Michael Fassbender's last X-Men movie: link. IMO, that would be rocking awesome. I know that most people are all about Jean Grey and Storm and Gambit and whatnot and whonot, but I don't give a flying banana about any of these characters. Professor X and Magneto and the endless push and pull of their affection for each other vs their conviction is the only thing that interests me because I find the juxtaposition endlessly fascinating. So, if these two come back, thumbs up from me!

* Fox renewed Brooklyn Nine-Nine, Gotham and Empire for another season: link.

* Tom Hardy dropped out of Suicide Squad: link. And there goes my interest. Official reason? Scheduling issues. Rumor has it, though, that he didn't like the script.

* Patrick Stewart and Ian McKellen won't be in X-Men: Apocalypse: link. Not unexpected. As long as I get awesome scenes with McAvoy and Fassbender, I'll be happy.

* Emily Blunt was cast as the Snow Queen, the vengeful sister of Rowena, in The Huntsman, sequel to Snow White and the Huntsman: link.

The 70s!

Vulture has learned that after finishing up next summer's X-Men: Days of Future Past, Singer will indeed be behind the camera on the new film, making this the director's first back-to-back foray into the X-Men world since he kicked off the franchise with X-Men (in 2000) and X2 (in 2003). But though Days of Future Past weaves together the veteran X-Men cast (including Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellen, and Halle Berry) and the younger actors introduced in X-Men: First Class (James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender, and Jennifer Lawrence), and Apocalypse will be a direct sequel set up in Days of Future Past's closing moments, the new film is intended to focus strictly on the younger McAvoy-Fassbender cast.

Source

First of all: EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE! *dolphin noises* More McAvoy-Fassbender Charles-Erik combo stuff! And second: If Apocalypse happens in the 70s, a thing that did NOT happen in the X1-X3 universe, you know what that means? X1-X3 are NOT set in stone, especially X3! The future will be once more completely open, nothing will be predetermined! How cool is that? \o/

Marvel plans to give Magneto his own comic book series, very noir stuff: link. The series will, among other things, focus on Magneto's origins, as well as his relationship with Charles Xavier - who is dead again at the moment, in the comic book verse, I mean. So there will be some flashbacks to their early days. That sounds actually pretty cool. I might get even get it!

The next X-Men movie will be called X-Men: Apocalypse and it will be released on May 27, 2016: link.

Regarding the plot & cast:

Days of Future Past will lead directly into Apocalypse. There’s a clear narrative thread that will string the two pictures together, and the character of Apocalypse is a good part of how this will work.

Several cast members of Days of Future Past will be wanted back for Apocalypse, including members of both the “past” and “present” timelines.

Source

I have no idea what the whole plot is about, I'm just curious about how they will merge the original and the FC cast again, considering that using time travel twice in the two subsequent movies would be over the top. Maybe the FC people will meet Apocalypse first? Who knows...

Hugh Jackman isn't sure if he will be back for the movie, though. He will be back for the third Wolverine, but he isn't sure about Apocalypse: link.

Also, Fox hired Simon Kinberg, the writer of X-Men: Days of Future Past and the first Sherlock Holmes movie - but also of X-Men: The Last Stand *cringes* - to oversee the creation of a cohesive universe, combing X-Men and the Fantastic Four: link.
katikat: (CBM_ProfessorX)
Okay, that was... boring. Brownie points for the amazing female characters, Yukio and Mariko - especially Yukio - and the end credit scene. The fight scenes were passable. But the rest? Eh. Just... eh. The plot was convoluted and didn't really make any sense, and the filling between the fights was downright boring.

Specific spoilers! )

I would rate it 5/10, weakest of all the movies I've seen this year.
katikat: (Actors_IanMcKellen2013_B)
I caved! I'm going to see The Wolverine tomorrow but I NEEDED to know what the end credit scene was about. It was that go nuts. So, I caved and read the spoilers here: link.

And it's FABULOUS! I'm quite ambivalent about the movie itself, I've never been a Wolverine fan, but the end credit scene is all that I could've wanted! OMG! OMG! OMG! If the fanfic authors in the X-Men fandom don't run with that, if they don't do a ficlety explanation of how THAT came to be, I'll... I'll do something drastic! EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE! \o/

There's a rumor going around that Marvel wants Joseph Gordon-Levitt for the main character in their Doctor Strange movie: source. I have no idea what Doctor Strange is about but it seems Marvel is determined to get JGL. They offered him the main part in Guardians of the Galaxy and now this... Though I have no idea why they think he would agree to it considering he refused the GotG part. Hm.

Another rumor that's going around is that there's an X-Force movie in the works at Fox: source. Again, no idea what X-Force is about. I just hope it won't be YET ANOTHER Wolverine centered vehicle. I love Hugh Jackman, he's an awesome dude, but I'm getting fed up with Wolverine. The same source also says that there's a Magneto film in development. I would really prefer that, provided Charles was in it, of course. I just can't imagine Erik without Charles. It would be like Arthur without Merlin. Or whatever.

Also, the bad guys and the plot of X-Men: Days of Future Past were revealed: source. Hm. I honestly don't know what to think of it. It sounds very... future-centric. Yet the call sheet said that most of the action would be taking place in 1973. Hm... We will see. More should be revealed at Comic Con.

Trailers seen:

Elysium - look, I love sci-fi and maybe I'm totally wrong in this case, but gosh, it looks so boring! Yet another "let's overthrow the system and topple the rich!" shtick. Not even Matt Damon and Jodie Foster make it look interesting. I guess, if there won't be anything else in the cinema that week, I might go and see it, but right now, I don't get what people are so excited about. Nothing we haven't seen done a dozen times over, several times this very year!

Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters - if I were a kid, I would swallow it with a spoon. But since I'm not a kid... eh.

White House Down - several months ago, I was excited. Now... eh. I think I will wait for the DVDs. IMHO, the trailer for Olympus Has Fallen looked much better.

Wolverine - I do want to see this in the cinema but the first Wolverine movie was a huge bust, boring as hell and whatnot, and I'm not that big a fan of Wolverine. Actually, I wish they would stop forcing him in every X-Men movie! But it's X-Men. I will go and see it in the cinema in 14 days.

DVDs bought:

Hollywoodland - reading the summary, it sounded very noir. And I like Adrien Brody. And it cost me $2.5 only, so...

Stay - looks like a supernatural thriller with Ryan Gosling and Ewan McGregor. That's pretty much all I needed to know :P

Trainspotting - yes, I haven't seen the movie yet. Not really my cuppa but everybody seems to rave about it and it cost me only $1, so...

Unstoppable - gosh, GOSH, they had the movie in the sales bin! Chris Pine and Denzel Washington! I have wanted to buy it for ages and now I got it for $4 only! I love it when Datart has a sale!

WB decided to move The Hobbit: There and Back Again back a few months from summer 2014 to Dec. 17 2014: source.

Personally, I couldn't be happier. Don't get me wrong, I can't wait to see how it all ends - on-screen, I've read the book, thank you very much - but its summer release date clashed with X-Men: Days of Future Past and with The Hobbit being the deserved it is, the 3rd movie would have pulverized XMDOFP! And since I'm a big fan of both, I'm glad that they will now both have the chance to shine!

According to various sources, Hugh Jackman's Wolverine is now officially confirmed to appear in the XMFC sequel X-Men: Days of Future Past.

Well... I like Jackman's Wolverine, I just hope he won't take over the story - because that's what happened with the first 3 X-Men movies and now there are two Wolverine-centric films... Can't this series, XMFC and its (possibly more than one) sequel, be Charles and Erik centric? It's starting to feel like Bryan Singer's flooding the movie with characters a la X3. I don't want a repeat of THAT. THAT would break my heart into itty-bitty pieces.
katikat: (xmen-charlesblue)
Bryan Singer teased the XMFC sequel with this quote: "As new species are formed through natural evolution, others will become rarer and rarer, and finally extinct. The forms which stand in closest competition with those undergoing modification and improvement will naturally suffer most." Source.

Sir Patrick Stewart said about the XMFC sequel:

Bryan let the cat out of the bag on Twitter, and it included announcing that Sir Ian and myself were going to be in this movie. We are, you know, under contractual oath with 20th Century Fox to say nothing about any prospective X-Men movie including the old team. I use “old” advisedly.

So it’s a kind of awkward position, because lovely Bryan Singer just blurted it all out there. For me the big thrill is knowing that Bryan Singer is attached to this movie, because not only is he a brilliant director, but also I adore him and hope that it might be true and that we do work together at some point in the future. But I’m not being coy. I know nothing about this project. And I’m hoping that might change in the future.

I have not signed a contract yet. I know there is a project in development, but we have no dates. No detailed casting. Thrilled to hear that my dear friend and colleague Ian McKellen is on board, but I’m sorry, you know, you need to understand, I’m not being cute. I know nothing.

Source

It sets my heart aflutter to hear him say "my dear friend" about Sir Ian McKellen. It's so cute!

Hugh Jackman talks about Wolverine and the XMFC sequel: source. I didn't know he was such good friends with Russell Crowe. Interesting. But I hope his bit in the XMFC sequel will be kept at minimum. There are enough movies that focus on his character already.

Sir Ian McKellen talks about Michael Fassbender's stint as Magneto:

What did you think of Michael Fassbender as Magneto in "X-Men: First Class"?
Yeah! I thought he was exactly that: first class. Excellent.

You never thought, Hey, I've got my eye on you. That's my part.
[Laughs] No. No. I thought he was better than me. But, we weren't quite playing the same character because he was so much younger than me. And the scope of Magneto, one day a Jewish actor will play it. Clearly, he's Jewish. We first meet him in at Auschwitz and there's scope for all sorts of people to pay Magneto. But, I was just the lucky guy who got to play him first.

Source

Not exactly X-Men related but - James McAvoy won't star in the Julian Assange movie with Benedict Cumberbatch after all. He had to drop out because of a scheduling conflict with XMFC: source.
katikat: (CBM_XMen)
OMG! Bryan Singer just confirmed that we will see these two...

... BUT ALSO these two...

... in X-Men: Days of Future Past: source!

Eeeeeeeeep! Seriously! How awesomely fantastic is that? To see both of these iconic duos in one movie?! *rolls in the pretty* That so, SO made my day! Is it 2014 already? \o/
katikat: (CBM_XMen)

After Matthew Vaughn dropped out of directing the XMFC sequel - a fact I still mourn ;_; - my only wish was for Bryan Singer to replace him. If not Vaughn, then Singer. The X-Men are his baby and the less involved he is - X-Men: The Last Stand & X-Men Origins: Wolverine - the worse they are, even downright terrible. So it filled me with glee when it was revealed yesterday that Bryan Singer WILL be directing the sequel! He WILL! Matthew Vaughn will be taking over Singer's position as producer, basically, they are switching roles. Source. Awesome!

X-Men 1

I decided to watch all the X-Men movies in one row, one movie an evening, to see if my love for XMFC holds compared to the rest of the bunch. IMHO, XMFC is the best movie in the series but I might be blinded by my love for Charles and Erik in the film. We will see how it goes...

You know, I don't get the fans' obsession with Logan. Sure, he's an interesting character but why is he the focus of 4 out of the 5 movies so far? *hands* I don't get it. Hugh Jackman is great in the part - and so young here! - but... Nope, still don't get it.

I love Scott and Jean as a couple but they were more like a brother and a sister here. The movie showed more tension between Jean and Logan than between Jean and Scott. They were an established couple, there should've been something that would prove it, show it! But Scott had as much interaction with Jean as he had with Storm or Logan. I wanted to feel it, feel them - but I didn't.

I loved, loved this Charles. Patrick Stewart was incredible here. I love it when Charles is written that way in fics, as someone who never gives up hope, never gives up on Erik even though he's constantly rejected and hurt by him. Can you even imagine such a big heart? It's amazing that he didn't grow as bitter as Erik.

And Erik. I didn't like that they basically told us he was a coward, that he used Marie to do his dirty work. Erik might be many things but he isn't a coward. That's what's so awesome about the whole Charles vs. Erik thing, they are both right and wrong at the same time and they are willing to die for what they think is right. Ian McKellen was amazing as Erik but I didn't like his portrayal here.

Watching this movie, you realize just how close James McAvoy's and Michael Fassbender's portrayal of these characters is despite the fact that they didn't try to copy the previous actors. They picked up their characters' main traits - Charles' gentleness and Erik's conviction - and ran with it. Yet they still managed to be this Charles and this Erik. Amazing.

Sweet!

Lookie at this!

Sweet! To be honest, NCIS:LA is one of the few shows I'm actually looking forward to. I mean, the TV season has already begun but I have zero interest in most of the shows... I don't know why. Lately, I prefer watching shows on DVD or movies. Maybe all those damnable hiatuses that US TV just looooves cured me of any interest in currently running shows.

Another sweet thing: managed to score the X-Men Quadrilogy - the first three X-Men movies plus Wolverine - for a measly Ł5.81 incl. shipping. Sure, it's used but I don't care. And I have had positive experience with the seller, zoverstocks, so far. I own the first movie in Czech but even buying it again as a part of this quadrilogy was cheaper than buying the movies one by one.

And speaking of DVDs, I'm contemplating doing a little meme of a sort. Kind of "3x..." You see, I realized that when I buy DVDs, I usually focus on a certain actor so I have many movies with, for example, Dolph Lundgren. So, I told myself, why not do a little 3x Dolph Lundgren mini-marathon? Or 3x Mark Dacascos? 3x Rachel Weisz? 3x Paul Walker? Stuff like that... Could be interesting. And it would force me to put my DVD collection in order!
