Title: X-Men: Days of Future Past (2014)

Cast: James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender, Hugh Jackman, Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellen

Rating: 8/10 or 4/5

I liked it a lot and I need to see it again to digest all its nuances, just like with CA:TW. Because it's an epic scale character piece, first and foremost.

Though I didn't like it as much as XMFC. Why? )

So, a lot of rumored or potential spoilers for the movie appeared in the last few weeks and I didn't read many if any of them, even in the case of this very spoilery article I just did Ctrl+F'd "Xavier" and this bit popped up:

Spoilers for how the tangled up timelines will be solved! )

The 70s!

Vulture has learned that after finishing up next summer's X-Men: Days of Future Past, Singer will indeed be behind the camera on the new film, making this the director's first back-to-back foray into the X-Men world since he kicked off the franchise with X-Men (in 2000) and X2 (in 2003). But though Days of Future Past weaves together the veteran X-Men cast (including Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellen, and Halle Berry) and the younger actors introduced in X-Men: First Class (James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender, and Jennifer Lawrence), and Apocalypse will be a direct sequel set up in Days of Future Past's closing moments, the new film is intended to focus strictly on the younger McAvoy-Fassbender cast.

Source

First of all: EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE! *dolphin noises* More McAvoy-Fassbender Charles-Erik combo stuff! And second: If Apocalypse happens in the 70s, a thing that did NOT happen in the X1-X3 universe, you know what that means? X1-X3 are NOT set in stone, especially X3! The future will be once more completely open, nothing will be predetermined! How cool is that? \o/

Marvel plans to give Magneto his own comic book series, very noir stuff: link. The series will, among other things, focus on Magneto's origins, as well as his relationship with Charles Xavier - who is dead again at the moment, in the comic book verse, I mean. So there will be some flashbacks to their early days. That sounds actually pretty cool. I might get even get it!

The next X-Men movie will be called X-Men: Apocalypse and it will be released on May 27, 2016: link.

Regarding the plot & cast:

Days of Future Past will lead directly into Apocalypse. There’s a clear narrative thread that will string the two pictures together, and the character of Apocalypse is a good part of how this will work.

Several cast members of Days of Future Past will be wanted back for Apocalypse, including members of both the “past” and “present” timelines.

Source

I have no idea what the whole plot is about, I'm just curious about how they will merge the original and the FC cast again, considering that using time travel twice in the two subsequent movies would be over the top. Maybe the FC people will meet Apocalypse first? Who knows...

Hugh Jackman isn't sure if he will be back for the movie, though. He will be back for the third Wolverine, but he isn't sure about Apocalypse: link.

Also, Fox hired Simon Kinberg, the writer of X-Men: Days of Future Past and the first Sherlock Holmes movie - but also of X-Men: The Last Stand *cringes* - to oversee the creation of a cohesive universe, combing X-Men and the Fantastic Four: link.

Nicholas Hoult talked a bit about his character, Hank McCoy AKA Beast, and his attitude in X-Men: Days of Future Past:

“There’s bad blood [between Hank and Erik] because of everything Erik’s done to Charles. Obviously Hank is on Charles’ side completely.”

Source

That makes me very, VERY happy. From the trailer, it's obvious that only Hank stuck with Charles, that the others left. It makes me feel all warm and fuzzy on the inside that Hank's so loyal to Charles \o/

Empire posted a breakdown of the X-Men: Days of Future Past trailer, with added commentary by Bryan Singer: link. Some great insights there. I'm now looking forward to the movie more than ever!

Isn't this the Comic Con trailer? I remember seeing a few seconds of it online after SDCC13 and it seems to be the same stuff.

But whatever, I can't wait for this. The trailer is very character driven, because, as Bryan Singer said, the CGI is nowhere near done yet. But it seems like the movie is pretty much Charles-Erik-Logan driven - me LIKES! But what a difference between XMFC!Charles and this one, it's heartbreaking...

New pictures from X-Men: Days of Future Past popped up on the internet. And LOOKIE! GIMME! GIMME NOW! *grabby hands*

EEEEEEEEEEP! Just 7 seconds and I'm already over the moon! Proper trailer next week! \o/

This is what Hugh Jackman said:

Are we going to see you and Fassbender throw down? You’d have my $15 right there.

It’s fair to say we don’t get on that well. I get sent back to the past and he has no idea who I am, but you can imagine Wolverine has a bit of fun with that.

Source

Man! I can't wait to see Logan interact with all the young characters, with Charles, Erik, Raven and Hank... I mean, in XMFC, he told them to fuck off, but now, knowing only their old selves... \o/ It feels like an outsider's POV in fics and that's something I adore!

○ Tom Hiddleston replaced Benedict Cumberbatch in Guillermo Del Toro's Crimson Peak: link. In the meantime, Benedict started the talks to join the Brad Pitt produced Lost City of Z: link. So, the thing with Star Wars was really just a rumor. Bummer.

○ Ian McKellen will play Sherlock holmes in A Slight Trick of the Mind: link. Eh. I love both Ian McKellen and Sherlock Holmes but this is not my cuppa. Sherlock without Watson? Sherlock with his mental powers fading? A young sleuth? Eh. Just... eh. I really don't like it when authors - this is based on a book - use Sherlock Holmes as nothing more than a springboard for their own creations. Either write about Sherlock and do him justice or build your own world, take the necessary risks and also responsibility for your own writing. This is just lazy.

○ A funny SDCC vid with the cast of X-Men: Days of Future Past: link.

*rolls in the pretty* I'm very, very, VERY happy, pleased as a punch actually, that the first character posters we got for X-Men: Days of Future Past are Charles' and Erik's!

I see people talking about Wolverine or Rogue or the new characters that will be introduced in XMDOFP, like Bishop - but for me, it's all about Charles and Erik. The X-Men will always be about Charles and Erik for me. They are the most fascinating characters ever. When you think of it, them on the opposite sides and yet! Yet remaining friends, even after all this time. Even 50 years after they met and after they parted ways, they are still waiting for the other to change his mind. Can you... can you even imagine such devotion? Yes, Erik did a LOT of shitty things to Charles, things I wouldn't and couldn't forgive anybody - and yet Charles does, again and again. You have to wonder what he reads in Erik's mind that he does. It's so incredibly fascinating! And there's so much history between them! Gosh, gosh, GOSH!

NICE! Love the futuristic clothes! I know that people are looking forward to everybody from Kitty Pryde to Bishop, but for me, the X-Men movies will always be about Charles and Erik and their Epic Love (TM)!

These are giving me life!!!

EeeeeeeeeeeE! Like, literally! *hands*

They also showed a teaser trailer and this is a detailed description of it - AND IT SOUNDS LIKE IT'S ALL I WANTED IT TO BE AND MOOOOOOOOOOOOORE! )

EeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeE! PEOPLE!!! *rotf*

There's a rumor going around that Marvel wants Joseph Gordon-Levitt for the main character in their Doctor Strange movie: source. I have no idea what Doctor Strange is about but it seems Marvel is determined to get JGL. They offered him the main part in Guardians of the Galaxy and now this... Though I have no idea why they think he would agree to it considering he refused the GotG part. Hm.

Another rumor that's going around is that there's an X-Force movie in the works at Fox: source. Again, no idea what X-Force is about. I just hope it won't be YET ANOTHER Wolverine centered vehicle. I love Hugh Jackman, he's an awesome dude, but I'm getting fed up with Wolverine. The same source also says that there's a Magneto film in development. I would really prefer that, provided Charles was in it, of course. I just can't imagine Erik without Charles. It would be like Arthur without Merlin. Or whatever.

Also, the bad guys and the plot of X-Men: Days of Future Past were revealed: source. Hm. I honestly don't know what to think of it. It sounds very... future-centric. Yet the call sheet said that most of the action would be taking place in 1973. Hm... We will see. More should be revealed at Comic Con.

LOL! Ouch! I hope he looks better than this in the movie :P

Wow... Just WOW! Something about his body shape really DOES IT for me *_*

Interesting. He looks much... slimmer here than in XMFC. Don't get me wrong, I adored his looks in XMFC, this is just an observation. It looks like his looks will reflect that his Charles will be "in a dark place" in XMDOFP. Source. Now I want to see what Erik will look like, it's the 70s, after all...

Adan Canto who played Paul Torres in The Following was cast, according to his own Twitter, in X-Men: Days of Future Past. His tweets are collected here: link. There's also a picture of him with the cast, Ian McKellen and Patrick Stewart, among others. In one of his tweets he mentioned he "might turn into a ball of fire" if someone pissed him off. So, fans now speculate he might be playing Sunspot:

If he is, then I think it's a pretty accurate casting. Sunspot should've appeared in XMFC already but was written out. Now it looks like he's back in the game. I'm glad for Canto, he's a really good actor and deserves to become famous!

Also, funny thing: XM:DOFP also stars Shawn Ashmore who was with Adan Canto in The Following this year! Ha :) And Kevin Bacon was in XMFC. Funny.

This is a list of all the X-Men: Days of Future Past characters so far. Besides the recurring characters from the previous movies, new actors were added: Booboo Stewart, Omar Sy, Bingbing Fan and Peter Dinklage.

Unfortunately, according to this - link - Caleb Landry Jones AKA Shawn/Banshee won't be back. The same goes for the characters of Emma Frost, Azazel, Riptide and Angel. Also, no confirmation for Havok and Moira. Basically, it looks like only James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender, Jennifer Lawrence and Nicholas Hoult will be back from the XMFC cast. Interesting. I liked these four best anyway but I wonder why they dropped Havok and Banshee. Maybe because they look too young to be in their 30s in XMDOFP...

James McAvoy was asked about X-Men: Days of Future Past and this is what he said:

James McAvoy has praised the X-Men: Days of Future Past script.

"It's great. It's really good and strong," he told I Am Rogue.

"I think fans will love it. I think people who have never seen any of the [previous] X-Men films before are going to be really into it. I think it's satisfying and giving people what they want, while at the same time being challenging and giving them something different, new, and unexpected.

"I can't wait to work with Michael again, [plus] Jennifer and Nick," he said. "It's going to be great, we got along so well the first time around. That'll be fun.

"Then also, getting to team up with Sir Patrick. I don't know if I get to work with Sir Ian [McKellen], but it should be a real exciting time, I think."

Source

Awesome! I know that he wanted a deeper story for Charles, he wanted him to deal with the ramifications of what happened in XMFC, so if he's happy with the script, then I'm happy.

Also, the visual effects team that won an Oscar for Life of Pi will be working on the special effects! How cool is that? Source.
