There is a new interview with Eric Kripke over on TV Guide's web site. There's nothing really spoilery there - at least in my opinion - if you don't consider things like "lower budget for S4" spoilery, that is :)

There are some awesome things in the interview though... Quoting:

So in Season 4, (...) we'll be presenting it in our scruffy, angsty, Supernatural way, and we'll return to concentrating on the relationships and the characters. Does that basically mean the return to S1? No flashy gore, more low budget scare? *crosses fingers*

But if the fans overwhelmingly reject something, over and over and over, on every website, we tend to pay attention to that. Again, I want to stress, it never alters the core story and central mythology;... Awesome. I just hope that they did apply it to one chick by the name Bela Talbot and they will kick her butt out of the show *nods*

Ratings for Monday...
Gossip Girl: last week (repeat) 1.29 mil.; this week (new) 2.44 mil.
One Tree Hill: last week (new) 2.72 mil.; this week (new) 2.82 mil.
Bones: last week (new) 8.54 mil.; this week (new) 8.64 mil.
House: last week (nothing); this week (repeat) 8.04 mil.

Ouch for GoGi. I mean, all that money thrown into soft porn ads, fans miffed for them taking their show from down from streaming on their site... and for nothing. These ratings are horrible. And even after such a huge campaign, they're almost the same like the last airing's on Jan 9th - 2.34 mil. viewers...

ETA: This is ridiculous...

According to Marc Berman from The Programming Insider, the CW's spin on GoGi's ratings is: The return of Gossip Girl, paired with original episodes of One Tree Hill to create our new night of drama, gave us our best Monday EVER in adults 18-34 (2.0/6) and women 18-34 (3.0/8)... From 8-10, The CW was second in women 18-34 (3.0/8) and first in female teens (3.0/9).

Do they even realize how ludicrous they sound? "Yeah, nobody actually watched us but we had the most teenage viewers!" O.o I'm not slanting the show itself, just the spin on the ratings they give it. Come on, this is the least watched full hour show on the CW and they still present it like a hit!

ETA2: And if you want to read a hymn on GoGi take a look at this: The Genius of Gossip Girl. I wonder how much the CW paid for that article...

Lately, I've been having tough time downloading stuff. Some of the downloads from eztv don't work for me at all. And I can't download anything from a.scarywater, the main torrent site for anime. It tells me "10060; Operation timed out". I went looking for what that means and the web sites told me that basically, the tracker is busy and it kicked me out. Great. So, I have no way to download anime at all now because only Shinsen, aarinfantasy and some smaller subbers don't use this site *sigh*

Pst! Come here *beckons* I will tell you a sekrit! *whispers* Talking to [livejournal.com profile] michalyn is dangerous. She is a sneaky devil, that she is. She just reminded me of how much I used to love anime. And then I remembered the amazing, fantastic, unbeatable The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya. And so I changed my mood icons back to this series. Because even though I haven't seen one anime ep since last December, Kyon with his sarcastic comments still rocks my world!

But to insert Supernatural in here too... Just imagine a fic with the The Melancholy of... premise: Dean is in high school and he kinda meets this OFC girl who can warp reality... Yes, it would be het but I wouldn't even mind it! Yes, I'm crazy :D

I've spent a good portion of the day translating a book that I really don't like. I better don't even start about that one, otherwise you will find me yelling: "Deliver me from the evil that is Fiona McIntosh." And if that wouldn't be enough, after I was done with my work, I had to translate something for my colleague and then for my boss - and I really don't care about Hasbro's social compliance audits, especially since there is no Czech word for "social compliance". Talk about dancing around a topic, really.

So, to sum it up, it's rather tiring to translate something you can't stand day after day after day. I don't even feel like watching anime anymore. I have seen like 5 eps of something or other this week? I'm so far behind in all the anime that it's not even funny. The only anime where I'm up-to-date is Black Lagoon because really, it's Black Lagoon! So, I'm watching TV series and gay movies and I read. And I'm sleepy almost all the time *sigh*

And you know, I'm actually thinking about buying manga to other anime than xxxHolic and Fruits Basket. And what caught my eye? Bleach (of course XD) and GetBackers. The second manga doesn't really do anything to me with it's style but after reading the overview in [livejournal.com profile] crack_van, I find the plot quite interesting. It goes obviously much deeper than the anime - which was fabulous, btw!

Would you have any other suggestions? What manga should I buy? But please, no Death Note. At the risk of getting hit by a flying saucer, I just don't like it *ducks*

Bakumatsu Kikansetsu Irohanihoheto - subbed by Shinsen. It's a great anime set in Japan in the 19th century and it features a theater group and a bodyguard of an influential noble who try to exact revenge. Some supernatural stuff there, but especially Inoue Kazuhiko as the mysterious screenplay writer *sparkles*

Code Geass - subbed by gg. This anime is set in the future in which Great Britain conquered Japan. The main hero is half British, half Japanese, a member of the British royal family and he is trying to free Japan. Lelouch is rather arrogant character (reminds me of Light from Death Note) but even though I don't like him, I will keep watching it. If nothing else, the animation style reminds me of how CLAMP's artwork used to look like.

Happiness - subbed by Shiawase. School and magic. It's about a girl that met a boy when she was little. The boy was a great magician even back then. And since that moment, she wants to meet that boy again. And now, she meets a boy that looks like the one from her past - but this boy has no magic at all. Is it him? This anime is nothing special but there is the cross dressing boy Jun who really looks like a girl and I really like his sunny personality :)

La Corda d'Oro - subbed by SMS. Another variation of lotsa boys, one girl. It's set in a school where a half of the students concentrates mostly on studying music. The main heroine who attends the "normal" part of the school meets a fairy who gives her an enchanted violin. We will see where this leads :)

Mamoru-kun ni Megami no Shukufuku wo! - subbed by IZ+MM (there is only one episode out so far, unfortunately). Another school and magic stuff. The main heroine here is also searching for a boy... And when she finds him, he is smaller and younger than her and completely overwhelmed by her forceful personality. But no matter what the others think of this odd pair, she sticks up for him. It's over the top funny stuff but I like this odd couple :)

Tenpou Ibun Ayakashi Ayashi - subbed by Lunar. Excellent stuff. Set in old Japan again. It's about a man (an adult of almost 40 years!!!) who is running away from another world that seems to keep chasing after him. When he was a kid, he caught a glimpse of this world but contrary to other people who saw it, he managed to free himself and not fall under its spell. This is supernatural stuff, fights, monsters etc. sorta anime. Rather well done. And another cross dresser there!

I still haven't watched Bartender, Red Garden, Kateikyoushi Hitman Reborn or S-Strain, so we will see about that. So far, I've dropped only two anime I found unwatchable: Lovely Idol (sorta like American Idol in an anime form - and with idiotic songs too) and Super Robot Wars Original Generation (bad animation, stupid story, too much like Sousei no Aquarion, bleh :/).

But there is one very old anime I hope aarinfantasy will keep subbing - Patalliro from the 80s. If there is one gay anime, it's this! The animation reminds me a lot of how the manga From Eroica with Love was drawn. Over the top, but very good. And the ED animation suggests more than hints in the m/m department, really XD

Give me the three most touching, memorable moments you have seen in an anime!

My choices?

1. Sailor Moon: The episode where the Wise Man kills Sapphire when the prince tries to warn his brother Diamond of Wise Man's machinations. And when Diamond then picks up Sapphire's dead body and disappears... Wah! I cried like a little kid, really. I thought it rather unfair that only these two of all the baddies in this anime weren't revived :(

2. Ouran High School Host Club: "Kyoya! Mon ami! Bravo!" Tamaki jumping up and down, totally excited about Kyoya agreeing to accompany Tamaki on his adventures through Japan :D

3. Fruits Basket: The episode where Momiji told Tohru the story of the generous wanderer, who gave up his whole body to other people, until he didn't even have eyes to cry. The sad Momiji and the whole situation in which he was telling it to Tohru made me cry and even now, after all these years, I find that scene gut-wrenching.

Now, I need you to tell me what you liked best! Post it here or in your LJ. Lets create a new meme - it's Friday after all :D
katikat: (Default)
Black Blood Brothers - subbed by Kyuu. Vampires, brothers, scary stuff and fluff too. After seeing the first episode, it's quite interesting. Although the costume of the main hero is rather ridiculous! XP

Busou Renkin - subbed by Kyuu. Alchemy, monsters, a mysterious girl and a boy who gets himself killed in the first two minutes of the first episode. Looks good. It's not excellent and there seem to be a lot of "ghost-hunter" anime there this season, but it raised my interested nonetheless.

Death Note - subbed by Live-Evil. It's not bad. But after the first episode, I don't understand what the whole humbuck around this manga/anime is about, really. It's good but I think that there are quite some better anime this season :( I will keep watching because everyone is. Blame me! :P

Ghost Hunt - subbed by ureshii. I would say that this anime is more interesting than the above mentioned DN one. Interesting characters and no unsure, moon-struck boy as the main hero. It's about a girl who has to become the assistant of a Psychic investigator. I will definitely keep watching.

Otome wa Boku ni Koishiteru - subbed by GNU. A boy is forced by his grandfather's will to attend an all-girls school, dressed as a girl of course. A cross-dressing anime on the same light note like Princess Princess. Funny!

Shounen Onmyouji - subbed by DBZLD. Woohoo! What a ride. It's an anime similar to Tactics with light m/m moments that make my heart melt. I love Mokkun and his other persona very much too! It's about a boy who is the descendant of the famous Abe no Seimei but has no special abilities of his own. That is, until he meets this weird, talking... thing. Excellent. But the subbers are very very bad. Not their translation but there are so many mistakes that sometimes, you miss the meaning completely. I hope someone else will pick it up. I would switch subbers immediately.

Sumomo mo Momo mo - subbed by Megami. "Lets engage in child production." That're the first words of the OP. I think that sums up the plot and tells you exactly, how serious this anime is. The daughter of a dojo master is not strong enough to learn his special technique. And thus her father wants her to marry and bear the children of the other martial art clan's son. But this son is not really that... well... Light, funny stuff! :D

Part 3 to come!

And I decided to change my mood icons - The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya.
katikat: (Default)
Asatte no Houkou - subbed by Lunar. It's a touching anime about two females: A little girl who wants to grow up quickly and an adult woman who wants to be a child again. The plot is based on the fact that one Summer night, their wish is granted. But nothing is as they imagined it to be. It's a quite anime, more of the slice-of-life-ish sort but I like it so far :)

Black Lagoon - The Second Barrage - subbed by Shinsen. The second season of a fast-paced action anime with lotsa gunfights, blood and piles and piles of dead people :) Who would not love the sarcastic Revy or the placating Rock? This one is definitely a keeper!

D.Gray-Man - subbed by SD. Monsters, exorcists, the imaginary end of the 19th century in London. Mystery, interesting and very likable characters. More of the horror-ish sort with lotsa action and obviously tragic secondary characters in every ep.

Kanon - subbed by SS-Eclipse. As I said earlier, the story is touching and funny with some tragic undertones. I'm especially on it for the art and the seiyuu. Quite the good stuff :)

Negima - subbed by Mahora. A funny anime about a wizard-to-be who travels to Japan to act as a teacher in an all-girls school. There may be some serious stuff somewhere in there but mostly, it's a hilarious comedy about a boy-ish teacher who is afraid of his rather wild class full of girls.

Pumpkin Scissors - subbed by Eclipse. There is a war relief unit called Pumpkin Scissors. It's lead by a woman and in the first episode, an ex-member of the ATT (Anti-Tank-Trouper) unit joins them. It's quite interesting. And I like the contrast between the spitfire woman and the rather slow giant that's her new subordinate :)

Tokimeki - subbed by C1. Funny funny, hilarious stuff. A young boy transfers to a new school. A VERY nutty school where everyone is bonkers, the teachers included. I think that folks who liked Ouran might like this one too :)

Yamato Nadeshiko Schichi Henge - subbed by C1. Four beautfil, gorgeous boys... and one butt-ugly girl. To win a free rent, the boys have to transform the girl into a lady. An impossible task! XD Again, rather Ouran-ish with lotsa flowers, sparkles and over-the-top humor. Wonderful drawings!

Yoake mae yori ruriiro na - Crescent Love - subbed by Lunar. There is a kingdom on the moon. After a long and ugly war, this kingdom and Earth became friends again. And now, the Moon Princess comes to Earth to study our customs. It's a rather funny anime because the Princess starts living with the main male hero's family, creating impossible, hilarious situations. Of the funny sort :)

That's it for now. Part 2 to come!

Asagiri no Miko aka Shrine of the Morning Mist is a good anime, funny and cute but it's not really remarkable. It's just your average series about a group of miko/priestess who fight against monsters and protect a boy whom one of them loves.

The main heroine is the miko-trainee Yuzu. Since her childhood she has had a crush on her best friend Hiro. Hiro is a strange boy - his eyes are of a different color and he is always targeted by monsters even though nobody actually knows why. To protect him, Yuzu enlists four girls from her school. They establish the miko council and protect Hiro and the school from all evil.

As you can see, the plot is not really original. But it kept me interested enough to watch the whole series. Even though there are demons, this anime is mostly fun with just a touch of angst. It's quite funny to watch how the miko-trainees deal with their harsh training and how they turn into their school's heroes.

But the most interesting characters were Koma, the cat spirit (or something like that), and Tadaaki, Hiro's grandfather. These two fell in love but since Koma is immortal, she saw Tadaaki grow old and then get killed by the same demon who is now targeting Hiro. I think that was the most touching part of the story. Oh, and one mustn't forget the Twilight Miko, the two female demons who weren't bad at all in the end, they just wanted to be accepted. The scene where they gave up their lives to save the only man that knew what they were and liked them anyway was another highlight of this show.

This anime was rather easy to watch because even though it has 26 episodes, each part is only 12 minutes long so you can consider it a snack between main dishes :)

As I said, it was a good anime but not one that you will remember five years from now. Three stars out of five :)

What is better - manga or anime? I usually hear that manga is way better than the anime that was made after it. I hear that manga is more in depth, has more details, more character development and other stuff like that. Well, so far, my experience goes the other way around...

I have read several manga that inspired anime - the first four books of Prince of Tennis, the first seven books of xxxHolic and the first book of Ouran High School Host Club. And I must say that the anime are better done than the manga.

In PoT, the matches are really short, sometimes missing completely. If you don't like them, then the manga is perfect for you. But I kinda, sorta do like them. Without the matches, it's not really about tennis. On the other hand, this way there is more space for character development there. But the anime offers a lot of space for that too. And it's better drawn that the manga. I've noticed that the new National Championships OVAs go rather with the manga style than the previous anime one. But except for these details, the anime and the manga are pretty much the same...

In xxxHolic, the style is pretty much the same like in the anime. But the stories are less developed and concentrate much more on the xover between the worlds of xxxHolic and Tsubasa Chronicle. A lot of these scenes are missing in the anime. And since I'm not really bonkers about TC, I very much prefer the way the anime is done. And a lot of the stories that the anime developed into full episodes are just mentioned or are really short in the manga (especially the Pipe Fox story). And xxxHolic is naturally about seiyuus too, which you always miss reading the manga. So, here goes another point to the anime team XP

And Ouran High School Host Club. I think that the majority of people who has read the manga will tell you, that the anime is much better. It's not just the stories that are mostly the same (Tamaki finding out about Haruhi was done differently and it didn't have such a stunning effect). It's about the style and drawings that are much better in the anime. And then there are the seiyuus that did an incredible job. Oh, and one mustn't forget the music here. And the colors. The anime feels much more alive than the manga.

So, even though manga has its own charm, in these three cases, I pretty much prefer the anime. It doesn't mean that I won't buy other volumes of xxxHolic and Ouran (PoT I had only borrowed from friends) but I would still tell my friends to rather watch the anime :)

Yuri

Lately, I've been really getting into yuri anime and relationships. It's really strange because before that, I was only into yaoi or het. But then I've started watching the anime Simoun where the girl-on-girl kissing and yuri relationships are rather pronounced. And there was this cute scene in Tsuyokiss where the president of the student council got all predatory on her secretary - that one was really cute! 8D Before that, the only yuri series I watched was Kannadzuki no Miko which was more than a bit boring (though the brotherly relationship there was kinda interesting XP). Only the Zero couple in Loveless raised my interest but that was it. Oh, and I mustn't forget Mai HiME and Shizuru and Natsuki. Wow, that one was rather intense!

So, now I'm curious - are there any interesting action/sci-fi/mystery anime out there that would focus on a yuri relationship?
katikat: (Default)
I've been watching a lot of anime lately, but of the ones that are running now, I think the best ones are Utawarerumono, Saiunkoku Monogatari, xxxHolic and Ouran High School Host Club.

Utawarerumono is all about fantasy, mystery, fighting wars and conquering...
Saiunkoku is about fantasy, intrigue, gorgeous guys and a really spunky heroine...
xxxHolic is mystery pure, ghosts and a really bad-tempered hero *snuggles Watanuki*...
and Ouran is a comedy with a touch of melancholy and just what one needs in this heat!

I don't think I could choose only one out of these four... All these anime are LOVE and I can wholeheartedly recommend them!
katikat: (Default)
I don't exactly know, how to describe the day I had today... )

On the anime front: )

And other stuff: )

On the fanfiction front: )

Other obsessions: )

And a question at the very end - folks, I need your help. I'm collecting official anime pictures with a Christmas theme. I have some Fake pics and Inouyasha, one or two from other anime but...

Does anybody have any Christmassy anime pics on their HDD - official, not fanart - and would be willing to share? Or do you know where to find them on the net?
katikat: (Default)
Since I returned, I've been trying to catch up on all the series I missed... but my downloads are one big mess right now since I don't remember what I wanted to download and what I'd been already downloading and there is not even 1 GB of free space left on my 40 GB HDD. And if that wouldn't be enough, I found out that I kinda misplaced ep 4 of Rozen Maiden and eps 16-19 of Tsubasa Chronicles... Argh!

I finally watched the latest episode of Supernatural and I loved it to pieces, like always. My speculations about why Sam didn't feel his father... ). What do you think, my dear friends?

I spent this evening reading a wonderful Starsky and Hutch slash story by Abigail Crabtree which can be found here. A lot of Hutch!Angst which I adore. I'm really happy with that.
katikat: (Default)
So, I finally managed to download the promos. There will be so many new and great animes soon! I liked the promos of Angel Heart, Blood+, Ergo Proxy, Jigoku Shoujo, Noein Mou Hitori no Kimi e and especially the one of Soukyuu no Fafner: Right of Left (I hope that they will show more of my favorite yaoi-sh pairing there! :P). Solty Rei doesn't look bad either since it's done by Gonzo, but there are too many little girls there. What I really did NOT like was the sequel to Mai HiME! My God, what did they do to the characters? They look like a six-year-old drew them! In Binchotan, Happy Seven and Lamune there are too many girls and not enough boys which I don't like that much. Paradise Kiss didn't catch my interest either and to watch the sequel to Rozen Maiden I would need to finally finish downloading the first season X/

But all in all, Autumn does look really good in the anime department!
