Gosh, Pepper is so, so cool in this! And I just love that RDJ actually championed for her to be a part of the action this time, not just a damsel in distress:

It was Downey Jr. who insisted on having Pepper in The Avengers. "I was like, 'You can't just pretend that I got in a fight with Rhodey and Pepper's out of town.’ They said, ‘You can't have both of them,’ so I said, ‘All right, I need Pepper.’”

So this time, Downey Jr. wanted to make sure Pepper had something to do: "How do we have it so she's not going [whining], 'Tony!' and I'm going [growling], 'Where's Pepper?' (...) That's the other thing that I have been pushing for," said Downey Jr. "She's in great shape, she's really game. There's all these genre movies and you have these capable women and they're like, 'Oh my god, some action is happening, I better step away or get caught in something over here.' It's like, 'Really, is that where we're at in the 21st century?'"

Like I needed another reason to adore RDJ!

I don't really follow politics. All that the morons up there do is piss you off and ruin your day and no matter for whom you vote, they all turn out the same in the end, protecting only their own butts and loaded pockets. But even in the light of our country's nuttiness, the nonsense that some US politicians spout makes us pause incredulously. Yes, I'm talking about Mitt Romney and his band of idiots.

Madeleine Albright pretty much summed up my opinion:

"I'm not sure I'm going to state this exactly right. But I think there are some who believe they are actually protecting women, you know, and that it is better for women to be taken care of. I think women want to take care of themselves, and I think having a voice in how that is done is very important. And frankly, I don’t understand -- I mean, I'm obviously a card-carrying Democrat -- but I can't understand why any woman would want to vote for Mitt Romney, except maybe Mrs. Romney."

What a lady! And I couldn't agree more. What woman would vote for a party that wants to see her barefoot and pregnant in the kitchen, taking care of her husband's needs, forbidden to think and decide for herself? It's madness!

I don't like gender-bending. Period. I don't like the idea of a female Watson (Elementary) and I didn't like a female Starbuck (Galactica). IMHO, the gender-bending of existing, established male characters does not further the acceptance of women in strong roles, it's simply lazy writing. It's the writers' way of saying that a female character can be interesting only if her part started with a penis. No, just no.

Regarding Elementary, why didn't they make Irene Adler a main character? Can you imagine Sherlock Holmes being aided by the best con-woman in New York? Or Mrs. Hudson, making her an ex-CIA agent or something? THAT would have been interesting. Giving Watson a vagina is just the easy way out.

Regarding BSG, why didn't they explore the character of Athena, Apollo's sister? Or Serena, Apollo's wife? Serena went from a housewife to a fighter pilot in five seconds flat in the old BSG. An abundance of angst and issues, a richness of material to explore. But no, they gave Starbuck boobs. Why? Because just like with Watson and Holmes, Starbuck's relationship with Apollo was already a part of the package. So why strain your braincells, right?

That's why I admire Peter Jackson so much. Instead of gender-bending characters, he expanded the existing ones - Galadriel, Arwen, Éowyn - or inserted new ones - Tauriel. IMHO, that's the way to go. Either explore and expand existing female characters, adapt books with female characters, or come up with new, original ones. Move your lazy ass, writers! Don't take the easy way out! You're not doing women any justice right now!

I haven't read "The Hunger Games" books yet nor have I seen the movie - seriously, the more hype something surrounds, the less interested I am in it, go figure. But!

I freely admit that I'm very insensitive when it comes to sexism etc. In most cases, I think it's simply bad writing, not some prejudice on the part of the writer. I'm more of a 'live and let live' kinda girl when it comes to stuff like that. But some of the reviews that popped up for The Hunger Games movie made even me livid!

If the reviews pointed out that Jennifer Lawrence didn't really fit the description of Katniss, that would be okay and perfectly fine. From what I read, she really doesn't. But there's pointing this out and then there's basically calling her fat! Link.

The Hollywood Reporter’s Todd McCarthy comments that Lawrence’s “lingering baby fat shows here.” And—most bluntly—Hollywood Elsewhere’s Jeffrey Wells calls Lawrence a “fairly tall, big-boned lady” who’s “too big” for Josh Hutcherson, who plays Katniss’s romantic interest. (In case the message didn’t come through: Wells thinks Jennifer Lawrence is BIG. He also thinks we should be wary of “certain female critics” who “may be susceptible to the lore of this young-female-adult-propelled franchise.”)

Wow. Just wow! What the fuckity fuck! As some of the commenters pointed out, why is only Jennifer Lawrence the target here? What about the male actors? Not one word about them, only Jennifer's body is dissed!

I loved this comment by Paige Junge:

I agree that if the casting director were striving for pinpoint accuracy, JL wouldn't have been the first choice - but it's obvious by the selection of other actors that they really didn't care about physical accuracy.
Since that's the case - and pretty obvious - why aren't the critics pointing out the same misaligned casting issues with the other characters? Why is it just Katniss?
Stanley Tucci's skin was supposed to be blue and President Snow was supposed to look as plastic as a Ken doll, not old, wise, and bearded. And Woody Harrelson is just way too clean cut to be Hamich. He supposed to be one step up from cliche hobo-style guy.
So I think, yeah it is a little odd that it's female's body that under scrutiny (yes I know, she's the main character...but if a critic is going for accuracy, go for full accuracy!)

I really hope Jennifer is strong enough mentally to take this, that she won't fall victim to their body image issues - because, yes, it's THEIR issues. She's perfectly fine! More than fine!

I'm strangely fond of these old pin up girl pictures!

Just look at it! This girl is sexy because she actually has meat on her bones! She has breasts and a butt and real thighs. Isn't it much sexier than the walking dead things you see on the runways or in shows/movies these days? When I can actually count a girl's ribs without an X-ray machine, it's not pretty anymore, IMHO. But girls like this one... Man, it's gorgeous. And so sexy! *_* Marilyn Monroe? Yay. Kate Moss? Nay.

Wow!

You know, I don't like beauty contests. I think they're mostly demeaning, citing the girls' measurements and pedigree as if they were cows on the auction block, but the new Miss Universe? OMG, she's GORGEOUS! Miss Leila Lopes from Angola...

More pictures here. Wow. Just wow. She's beautiful... *_*
