Leto & Ghanima, Children of Dune

Yes, STILL obsessed with these two! *rolls in the pretty* For me, the mini-series Children of Dune means perfection. I decided not to read the Dune books because I don't want it to spoil my pleasure, my love for Leto & Ghani. Why? Because, AFAIK, in the Children of Dune book, they are little kids, like 8 years old, and pretty much arrogant know-it-alls. In the mini-series, they are older, kind and selfless, always putting everybody else's well-being before their own, especially Leto.

As you know, I'm pretty much head over heels for James McAvoy. Yes, STILL. And he and Jessica Brooks have amazing chemistry in this mini-series, you can literally feel how close they are, the twins, and it's all down to how the actors play the parts, the small touches, always holding hands, standing close, Leto kissing the top of Ghani's head just because he can... You feel that these two know everything, remember everything and are far wiser than their age suggests - yet they're still young, almost children, so they get into all kinds of mischief.

And it's also terribly sad, when Leto realizes what his destiny is and does his damnest to protect Ghanima while all that Ghani wants is to follow him and stand my his side and never leave him. This quote still makes me all teary-eyed:

Ghani: He runs and runs and runs. And when he's exhausted himself, he returns to me, puts his head in my lap and asks me to help him find a way to die.

And that's pretty much them in a nutshell. So beautiful and sad it hurts...

Oh, Xmas!

I received some really sweet gifts from my mom this year. And Children of Dune from [livejournal.com profile] yami_tai! You should've heard me coo with happiness. Man, I love this mini-series so much. Yes, I'm still smitten with Leto and Ghanima!

And then we watched Red with my mom because she's awesome and she loves Bruce Willis. I talked her ear off about Karl Urban. He looked really cool in this movie. Lovely!

And now I'm off to bed. Have a Merry Xmas!

I'm quite fascinated by some peculiar things, one of them being the consensual sibling incest in fictional works - with emphasis on consensual and sibling. Non-con and parent/child incest is a big squick for me, seriously! I don't even like daddy!kink or age-difference!kink, I find these things creepy. But a consensual relationship between siblings is quite a fascinating thing for me - yeah, I'm weird that way, sue me.

I'm actually not interested in the sex part of this relationship - sex in general is very, very low on my list, TBH - more in the whys and hows. Why would two people related to each other decide that they are basically "IT" for each other? That they are the most important thing there is in the world for each other? Why would they defy something the society considers taboo these days? And is it worth for them in the end?

The best examples of this non-sexual yet totally subtext-y relationship for me are...

Sam and Dean Winchester from Supernatural

&

Leto and Ghanima from Children of Dune

With Sam and Dean, the relationship is definitely not sexual - let's be realistic there, folks - yet there's still no room for anybody else between them. It was even heavily implied that they were soul mates - the writers are actually pretty much on board with this "you 'n me" stuff so I think they didn't go all the way and say it outright, that they are soul mates, I mean, because the network would've put a kibosh on it anyway.

With Leto and Ghanima, the thing is a bit different because they are pre-born and they remember their past lives where they used to be lovers, even married. In this life, their relationship isn't sexual either, yet it's still the case of "you 'n me" again. Maybe it's because the actors had amazing, fantastic, unbeatable chemistry and when they looked at each other, you felt like they didn't see anybody but each other.

In any case, it's these relationships that fascinate me to no end. I get that it's not everybody's cuppa, definitely not, but... *shrugs* That's why I love TVTropes.org and their Incest Is Relative tag. Many interesting things to explore...

... It's best to think of...

... This...

... And this...

... And of this too!

Ah, Leto and Ghani, still the most perfect couple I've ever seen... anywhere *happy sigh*

I'm seriously smitten with Children of Dune - I bet you figured it out by now what with my inability to shut up about it. I just adore the atmosphere, the deep sensuality of the mini-series. And let's not forget how stunning Ghani is...

I just adore the costumes she wears, the one with the hat is... *_*

And then there is her relationship with Leto... *happy sigh*

... Who is, in case you missed it looking at these pictures, her twin brother! *shifty eyes*

You know, until CoD, I was only into brothers - hey, I even have a tag "kink: brothers" - mostly because, when it comes to a brother and a sister, they are always portrayed as protective!brother & vulnerable!sister - which is pretty much as EWW as it gets for me. But in CoD, Leto and Ghani are equals, physically and in their protective feelings towards each other. Yes, I think they kick started a new kink for me...

In Children of Dune, there's one disturbingly hot scene. As in, Leto is captured, drugged and the girl who keeps feeding him Spice can't keep her hands off him. It's very non-con-ish, but thanks to James McAvoy also amazingly sensual. I know that I'm a very, very bad person but it's one of the hottest things I've seen outside of an erotic movie... O.o

More pics cut! )

That's so... wow, seriously hot. You would have to actually see the scene, the pics don't do it justice, but man! O.o And it helps that it's a memory of Ghani that gets Leto of the funk... *_*

I just seriously cried my eyes out. Leto and Ghani's story is so incredibly heartbreaking.

Spoilers for Leto's fate! )

Seriously, my inner romantic wants to re-write the ending and give those two a happy end. They so deserve it. After what they - and especially Leto - had to go through to correct all the mistakes their father and aunt and grandmother had done. But there are no happy endings on Arrakis, huh?

One of the things I loved most was when Leto found out he could call the worms to him just by stomping his feet, that he didn't need a thumper. And that the worms would follow his wishes...

And another sad part was this... Ah, Leto, you poor, poor boy.

But is it just me or was everything Leto-related very sexual? I mean, his captivity, when the girl was feeding him spice and always touching him. When he took in the worms, his expression...

Well, James McAvoy is very, very hot in this. And I mean, seriously hot.

So, yeah, my poor little heart is crushed. I knew how it would end, of course. Yet it still hurt to actually see it...

A "Pick Me Up" pic spam. Yeah, I need it. The whole fanfic bruhaha left a bad aftertaste in my mouth - why do I do this to myself?

So, Leto & Ghani. Ghani & Leto. Beauty that cannot be denied!

More cut! )

Beautiful. Simply amazing. You know, these two make me want to write original fic, set in a fantasy land. Gosh, they push so many of my kink buttons - especially the "a girl's protective of a boy" button. Hard!

This entry? Gushing about Leto and Ghanima. Gush pure. Squee in its purest form XD

I mean, seriously, whether you see sexual tension or just "plain" soul-bonding between the twins, it's a beauty to behold. James McAvoy and Jessica Brooks... I have yet to see this much chemistry between another man and a woman on-screen. You actually believe that they can read each other's mind. They're always touching, kissing each other, holding hands, communicating with a look - it's so gentle and loving that your heart aches. And Leto's realization that he cannot allow Ghani to share his fate and Ghani's realization that Leto's not telling her everything, that for the first time in their lives he's holding back, that he CAN'T tell her, is heartbreaking.

Lotsa pics of Ghani and Leto! )

Also, I really like the butterfly... thingy that always appears when Leto walks the desert. Gorgeous.

Ehm, so. Yes, I obviously adore Ghani and Leto. I bet you haven't noticed yet, right? ;)

Ah, finally arrived at the awesomeness that's James McAvoy's Leto Atreides!

I have no idea why he has to be running around half naked - but I approve. What a fine specimen, isn't he? *_*

This mini-series has a wonderful OST. The song that was playing while Alia took revenge on Muad'dib's behalf, that was beautiful...

I felt so sorry for Muad'dib. He wanted to do good but what he set in motion got out of hand pretty fast. And then he couldn't stop it anymore. It's kinda... embarrassing to be chastised by your own unborn son, right? And when you realize what Leto will have to sacrifice to undo what his father and aunt did, I feel even more sorry for him. At least he has Ghani to share a part of his way with...

As you may have noticed, I've fallen in love with the two Dune mini-series - well mostly with Children of Dune but you can't really have one without the other, right? They are great on their own, but what makes them special is this:

The thing is... As much as I like them and as much as I would love to learn more about Leto and Ghani, I won't read the books. Not after I found out what a homophobe Frank Herbert had been - seriously, kicking out his own son for being gay? Classy. I'm just not one of those people who can separate the work and its creator. I just can't.

That's why I'm so happy that Children of Dune is - apparently - really different than the book, starting with Ghani and Leto as teenagers, not little kids. Sure, the main events are the same but after I read what the book's about, I realized that if it weren't for James McAvoy and Jessica Brooks, if they had kept Leto and Ghani as kids... The mini-series just wouldn't have done it for me. I realized that it's not the mini-series itself, it's them, these two actors and their chemistry that's the be all and end all of it for me.

I just don't understand why so many sci-fi writers are homophobic. Orson Scott Card, Anne McCaffrey and now Frank Herbert. And I bet there are dozens and dozens of others. Shouldn't sci-fi be about spreading the wings of your imagination? About discovering new frontiers? But these authors, instead of going forward, are real throwbacks, spreading prejudice instead of tolerance, setting boundaries instead of crushing them. Sad. Really, really sad.

Dune 1.5

Finished watching the mini-series Dune with Alec Newman as Paul Atreides. Not bad at all.

What I didn't like were the time-jumps. I mean, I can understand why the writers used them, they needed to cover a lot of ground in only three movies. Still, I would have preferred some... clue, something to tell me how much time has passed - like, I don't know, "Three years later" or something. The end-result was pretty confusing in places. And choppy, because there were like a scene or two, a time-jump, three or four scenes, another time-jump...

Hm, well, I definitely liked it better than David Lynch's version, the one with Kyle MacLachlan.

What was really creepy? Alia, Paul's pre-born sister. Yikes. I find creepy kids scary.

Dune 1.0

As I mentioned a few days ago, my new-found obsession with James McAvoy lead me to Children of Dune. But to get to this part...

... I need to watch Dune first - which I have in 2 parts instead of 3, don't ask me how or why *hands* - because I'm anal-retentive and when I do something, I do it for realz!

You know, I now remember why I was so in love with this mini-series. Paul Atreides is rocking awesome. I mean, at the beginning, he's a spoiled brat, but he matures so much during the movies. And I just love, love, LOVE movies/series/books where an exceptional man becomes the leader of the... whatever - see my obsession with Star Trek: Reboot.

Sure, the special effects are very... TV, but I don't mind that. I like the atmosphere they created for this mini-series. And it's also great to see so many Czech actors, ha!

Still, I can't wait for Leto and Ghani! Man, finally a het pairing I fall head over heels for - and it's a brother and a sister. But seriously, if those two had only brotherly/sisterly feelings for each other, I'll eat my hat. Witch ketchup!

You know, whatever whoever may think of Children of Dune, there's no dispute that this scene was magical...

It's from the 3rd movie, when Leto and Ghani appear to confront Alia in the court, side by side as always. Of course, the follow-up scene, Leto kicking major butt while looking deliciously hot, didn't hurt either, right? ;)

Is it wrong that I ship Leto and Ghani, even though they are twins, like whoa? I mean, not even the Winchester brothers - another soul-mated pair - can trump these two in their closeness O.o
