Title: Frozen (2013)

Cast: Kristen Bell, Idina Menzel, Jonathan Groff, Josh Gad etc.

Rating: 4/5 or 8/10

I decided to finally see what the hoopla was about. And I liked it, there were quite a few really intense, action-filled moments. But overall? I'm not sure why this particular animated movie became so popular. Personally, I liked Tangled or How to Train Your Dragon better.

My favorite parts? Kristoff and Sven, hands down, both as kids and as adults. They were simply sweet. And I loved Kristoff and Anna's scenes, they were so funny and cute together.

My least favorite parts? Elsa and her issues. Like, seriously, they had the whole palace to themselves, with just a handful of trusted servants at hand. Was it really that difficult to give Elsa one huge hall to practice her powers and get them under control? Did she really just sit the whole 10 years or so in her room, brooding and bemoaning her powers? Or if her parents didn't think it safe for her to practice in the castle itself, why didn't they take her into the mountains to practice there? Maybe even with the help of the trolls? This was an easily fixable problem that bad parenting and self-hatred turned into a huge issue for no reason at all.

Overall, a really good, enjoyable movie. But it kinda scares me that so many people identify with Elsa. But that's just me - when I have a problem, I deal with it because no one else will do it for me.

This was such a great movie with an amazing voice cast: Bruce Greenwood, Jensen Ackles, Neil Patrick Harris, Kelly Hu, Jason Isaacs... Awesome, awesome, awesome! Though I wouldn't have recognized Jensen's voice at all. Curious.

This movie actually made me all teary eyed. First when Jason died - the way he looked at the bomb and you could see him go, "Oh..." so sadly. And then, when Jason asked Bruce why he didn't kill Joker, just why. Not anybody else, just Joker, because Joker took Jason away from Bruce - and Bruce did nothing. Batman just stuck Joker into a prison, from where he kept breaking out again and again, doing whatever he wanted. You could see how heartbroken Jason was because his own death wasn't enough for Bruce to end Joker.

This story fascinates me to no end. And as blood-thirsty as it might sound, I actually agree with Jason - what Bruce does is pretty much useless: he catches the bad guys, they go to prison, someone breaks them out, they start killing again and Bruce goes on and catches them again. An endless circle with many innocent people dead and the bad guys laughing.

I think I will have to find out more about Jason Todd. I really liked Red Hood.

This movie is really funny. The monsters and Dracula and the part about the hotel were the funniest, though. Dracula's relationship with Mavis was sweet but that storyline and Mavis' "zing" with Johnny were the weakest parts, IMHO. I preferred watching Dracula make a nutjob out of himself while running interference for Johnny, protecting his secret. That was simply hilarious!

And as crazy as it sounds, I found the humans' acceptance of the monsters more unbelievable than the existence of Dracula. How weird is that? And what exactly does that say about humanity? Or about my cynical view of it? :-/

This is my favorite Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle piece ever. It's amazingly well drawn, the voice cast is excellent - Chris Evans, Patrick Stewart, Sarah Michelle Gellar - and it focuses on my favorite turtle: Leonardo!

Gosh, the relationship between Raphael and Leonardo in this movie! The fight scene on the roof, when Raphael broke Leo's katanas and then almost stabbed him in his rage... Raphael's expression when he realized he lost control over himself, how far he had gone... His expression when Leonardo was then kidnapped, when he heard Leo scream... when he had to tell Master Splinter and admit that it was his fault... the gentleness with which he helped Leo out of the cage... AWW! MY HEART WAS MELTING! *rotf* Beautiful!

The funniest bits? Donatello playing IT - "Did you plug it in? Yes, it would help!" - and Michelangelo in general. The way he opened his eyes oh so wide, the way he grinned. These two... MWAH! Love them!

Such a wonderful, wonderful movie *happy sigh*

This actually disappointed me. Not that it wasn't funny but... I had a hard time connecting with the characters. I didn't really... feel them, I guess. Unlike Arthur Christmas, another animated movie from the same company, where I simply adored the characters and rooted for them, here... Eh.

The only interesting part, a part that I really liked was the relationship between the Pirate Captain and the Pirate with the Scarf, his Number Two. Scarf could always cheer the Captain up - and he was also his moral compass. And the one who usually saved the Captain's butt. I LOL'd in the scene where the Captain asked Scarf if he maybe was a woman in disguise. That kinda... gave me a pause. And I had to wonder - if Scarf WAS a woman in disguise, would the Captain actually consider... you know. I mean, I know that it's a movie for kids but there are usually bits and pieces in them that only adults understand and this... This was a surprisingly slashy twist :P

But overall... If you want to give a try to an animated movie from Aardman, go for Arthur Christmas. It's much better.

Oh, Chris Pine and his wonderful voice, so cuddly, giving me warm fuzzies... *happy sigh* And Hugh Jackman as the Australian Easter Bunny! Gosh, I have never heard him speak with his real accent. Sweet! And I wouldn't have even recognized Jude Law as Pitch Black!

I felt incredibly sorry for Jack Frost, that no one could see him, that no one believed in him even though he was giving children so much joy. The fact that he and Pitch Black were basically in the very same situation, they just handled it differently: Pitch started hating the whole world while Jack never stopped giving joy. And yet, I felt sorry for both of them.

And that's the reason why I think the ending should have been different. Because Pitch was punished for his deeds - but he didn't learn his lesson. He ended up locked away again. And to be honest, I felt sorry for him again. Because, yeah, he went about it in a totally wrong way, but he just wanted people to believe in him and he wanted the Guardians to feel what it was like to stop existing for the children. I think they should've made him learn his lesson - but at the same time, the Guardians should've recognized the need for the Boogeyman...

This is a short stop-motion animated movie based on Pirates! A Band of Misfits. I haven't seen that movie yet and I wasn't sure if it was for me, which is why I bought this cheap shortie to see what the whole thing was about. And now I really want to see it, the feature film, I mean!

Hugh Grant, Martin Freeman, David Tennant, Brian Blessed, Salma Hayek etc. and so on voicing pirates, folks! Hilarious! The Pirate Captain (Hugh Grant) is such a tool! And his relationship with the only normal person on board, the Pirate with the Scarf (Martin Freeman), is simply a hoot! Nobody can do deadpan like Martin Freeman. The BTS featurette on this DVD is so funny, the voice actors seem to have had so much fun doing the characters. I just love it, the BTS vids showing the voice actors reading their lines. Wonderful!

I guess I will have to get my hands on the movie, then. I'm really loving all the animated films from Aardman, like this or Arthur Christmas!

Well, that was... boring. I'm a big fan of animated movies. I adored How To Train Your Dragon and Tangled, I liked Arthur Christmas very much and even enjoyed Gnomeo & Juliet. But this? Eh. Just... eh.

I think it's because I didn't like the main characters and especially Jasmine. Oh, look at me! I'm gorgeous, rich, pampered and spoiled, I don't have to work and I have no obligations whatsoever, all I do is sit in the garden the whole day long and moan about how terrible my life is. WOE IS FRICKIN' ME! Really? REALLY?! All she did was whine about how she had to marry. But what did she actually do with her life? Did she think about her subjects for even one FRICKIN' minute? Was she bothered by not being able to help and serve her people? No. She ran away because she was being forced to marry - a guy she could actually choose on her own! She ran away because poor people have it so much better! And did she actually learn anything from her experience? A lesson in humility maybe? The importance of her people? Did she learn that there were people starving out there why she wailed about how trapped she was? No! She remained the same pampered, spoiled brat! Un-frickin'-believable!

And Aladdin. You know, the guy who would rather steal than work honestly while he moaned about how trapped he was in his life! The guy who wanted to achieve his goal through deception, who kept lying and breaking promises because he was too much of a coward to face the music. But he at least learned his lesson in the end, even though it was almost too little too late. He had to see everything he held close threatened to do the right thing. But at least he did it.

The only likable character was the Genie. What an awesome guy. So funny! My heart broke for him when Aladdin refused to release him. And even after that, he was still willing to give up everything to ensure Aladdin's happiness. Now that's a wonderful character!

So yeah, disappointed.

This is, I think, the best animated movie I've ever seen. Not only is it incredibly funny, it's also very touching and full of action and adventure. And the friendship between Hiccup and Toothless tugs at your heart.

I got really, really angry at Hiccup's father when he refused to listen to his son. It was like he was blind and deaf, he just didn't see or didn't want to see/accept what his son wanted or needed. Even Hiccup noted that their conversations were really one-sided. I guess the father represented all the close-minded people out there who had been taught hate since childhood. Only Hiccup, who wasn't physically strong and thus couldn't accompany his father on hunts, never learned how to hate.

And I actually got all teary-eyed at the very end, when Toothless curled up around Hiccup, protecting him. Like, seriously, animated movies for kids shouldn't make you weep your heart out. But that scene was so incredibly beautiful...

Also, I didn't know that 30 Seconds to Mars performed the main song, written by Jared Leto himself. Huh.

I liked the movie better than the previous films with Tobey Maguire. I really like Andrew Garfield and Emma Stone as a couple, they are incredibly sweet and the fact that they really are that close in RL bleeds over into the film...

The CGI was amazing and a real treat in 3D. There were some quite LOL-worthy scenes and the action sequences, especially between Spider-Man and The Lizard, were breathtaking. The last one, wow, just wow! I also hope that Peter's enemy-turned-friend Flash will appear in the sequel, I really liked his relationship with Peter. Also, I didn't know that C. Thomas Howell was in it and though his part was rather cheesy, I almost cheered out loud!

On the other hand... the movie is nice but quite forgettable. While watching it, you cheer and laugh, but once you leave the cinema... There is nothing that would stay with you and that you would want to discuss in detail.

My rating: 6/10

We also saw the trailers for The Dark Knight Returns and The Hobbit - both were AMAZING on the big screen!

And for Brave - which did nothing for me. The whole "I'll fight for my hand myself" and "let's make the contestants the biggest doofuses ever" irritated me. There's really no need to make women look good at the expense of men (ETA: or vice versa, of course). Women are awesome in their own right. Both genders should be equal, not one better and one worse and that's exactly how the trailer felt to me: Merinda = awesome; every guy, her father included = idiot. Meh.

I love the trailers for Arthur Christmas, link 1 & link 2! "Look, a polar bear... in a hat!" LOL! Amazing, James McAvoy as Arthur, Hugh Laurie as Arthur's older brother Steve, Bill Nighy (who played James McAvoy's father in State of Play) as Grandsanta...! It'll be HILARIOUS!

Which reminds me I still have to watch Gnomeo and Juliet, just for James McAvoy voicing Gnomeo! \o/

On the RL front, I dislocated my shoulder this morning - don't ask - luckily, without thinking I popped it back in immediately (having had the very dubious pleasure of dislocating my knee three times, I knew what to do - don't wait, just do it!). Oh God, ouch! Now, my arm's sore from the shoulder down to the elbow - which is still better than the alternative, I guess *grumbles*

Tangled

I watched Tangled last night and it was hilarious, seriously hilarious. But first thing first!

Zachary Levi can sing, peeps. Oh my, can he sing or what? Beautiful voice. I know that people fawn over Matt Bomer's voice - I kinda don't like it all that much *shrugs* - but Zachary Levi's... Wow. I had to check and re-check to convince myself it was really him singing! For some reason, that makes me want to marathon Chuck (got stuck in S3, IIRC).

And the movie! I laughed, I almost cried and it made me realize that I couldn't remember the last time I had this much fun watching an animated film!

Spoilers! )

Two LOL worthy parts?

Rapunzel: Something brought you here, Flynn Rider. Call it what you will. Fate. Destiny...
Flynn: A horse?

Flynn: Alright, Blondie.
Rapunzel: Rapunzel!
Flynn: ... Gesundheit.
