... because why bother and find out the truth, right?

The internet has been up in arms about how Benedict Cumberbatch said that Jonny Lee Miller took the part of Sherlock Holmes in Elementary for the "paycheck". Before you start spewing vitriol and calling him names, haters, do check your facts otherwise you will look like fools:

Cumberbatch has reached out to The Hollywood Reporter to clarify what he characterizes as a "misquote."

The statement:

"I am both bemused and upset at this misquote. I never said that Johnny took the job for the paycheck nor did I ask him not to do it. What I said is I would have preferred not to be in the situation where we will again be compared because we are friends. I know for a fact his motivations were to do with the quality of the script and the challenges of this exceptional role.

"It is baffling because I have only been supportive of an incredibly talented actor who I am proud to call a friend taking a job I know he is going to enjoy immensely and be wonderful in.

"Over 70 actors have played this exceptional character before us. To say that there can be only one Holmes would be ludicrous. We're both thrilled to get the opportunity to play him in a modern context. The world of Sherlock Holmes and the world that we live in now is big enough to take more than one interpretation. As a genuine Sherlock Holmes fan I am greatly looking forward to his series."

But I guess that doesn't sound as good when you want to hate on someone just because he breaths, right? Benedict Cumberbatch has always been supportive of Miller in this part, he did say he wasn't sure about it, if the parts were different enough, but he always wished him good luck. He said it, Jonny Lee Miller said it too... But some people will always take what tabloids say at face value when it suits their agenda.

ETA: And before you link me to the original ShortList article, I read it: link. And when you read his comments, remember what his "begone woman" and "attrocious drama" comments looked like just because the reporter didn't bother to mention Benedict was joking/to what exactly he was responding.

If you read 10 articles in which he is supportive of Miller and one in which it sounds he isn't and you decide to believe the one, despite everything that was said by both actors, on camera and off, what exactly does that say about YOU and your prejudice?

Benedict Cumberbatch will voice two parts in an upcoming episode of The Simpsons, the British Prime Minister and a snake-like character, and the episode will be called Love Is A Many-Splintered Thing: link.

The funny thing is, though, how got the parts:

Cumberbatch first revealed to InStyle magazine that he’d serendipitously worked his way into a gig on the long-running animated series. The actor happened to be taking a meeting at the studio where The Simpsons' voiceover work is done, and heard there was an uncast role. “I said, ‘I hate to muscle in here, guys, but could I record it?’ Next thing, I’m standing in a room with all those famous voices: Bart, Marge, Homer, Lisa,” he told the publication.

*giggles*

So, there's an article about the new Star Trek movie, about the journey Jim Kirk will have to undergo as a captain, that he will have learn to what it really means to BE a captain, like sending people to their deaths etc.: link.

But there's also a bit where Chris Pine talks about...

... Benedict Cumberbatch.

Star Chris Pine expands on that point, revealing that a major driver of Kirk's further growth is the villain, played by Sherlock star Benedict Cumberbatch:

"It is structured so that the antagonist brings out all of the qualities in Kirk that need to happen in order for Kirk to grow. As you know from Benedict, just watching him, vocally, he's fascinating. He's got this deep resonate voice. He's a fascinating face. He's a lovely guy and just super smart. You want to see something firing in his brain, so he's not just a blood-dripping-from-the-fangs bad guy. Benedict brings those kinds of smarts."

Aww... I just love to read all the awesome things the cast and crew have to say about Benedict. It's so sweet...

So, last night's Critics Choice Awards: link. Sherlock won Best Movie/Miniseries and Benedict Cumberbatch Best Actor in a Movie/Miniseries! Woohoo! I'm so happy that both the show and he are finally getting international recognition, especially in the US, that is!

Alex Kurtzman is one of the writers of the Star Trek sequel and this is what he had to say about Benedict Cumberbatch: link.

"He’s a genius," Kurtzman said. "There are certain actors who have the ability to take a line of dialogue and add a ring to it that you didn’t even know you put into the dialogue, into the line. And he’s one of those really brilliant actors. Just listening to him talk…you could enjoy him reading the phone book."

Going into how the villain will play into the larger story, the writer/producer then explained the importance of antagonist escalation, saying, "Sequels are about your bad guy. Because your first movie is always about the becoming of [the hero] and your bad guy has to test that hero in a very significant way. And he’s an incredibly formidable presence. He’s amazing. Are you going to be scared of him? Shit yeah!"

Awesome! Seeing how everybody and their uncle who worked on the movie are praising him, I now cannot wait even more to see it. Benedict's voice alone gives me the shivers!

There's a really great interview with Benedict Cumberbatch over on TVLine: link. He talks about Sherlock and Irene Adler and Downton Abbey there and he comes over as incredibly sweet and bashful. A lovely guy...

Of course, on ONTD, when they reposted the article there - link - people called him a privileged dick in the comment section. And again - what the fuckity fuck?! What a bunch of losers do these people have to be to consider someone as talented and outspoken and articulate as him a dick? Wow. Maybe he needs to use smaller words and improper grammar and throw a few "fucks" in for them to feel at ease with him. I guess they are like a support group, holding hands and reafirming each other in their smallness. I mean, I'm used to them calling him ugly and whatnot but this took the top, seriously!

So, Damon Lindelof, the writer of Star Trek had this to say about Benedict's performance in the movie: link.

"Benedict Cumberbatch, I can already say with a certain degree of confidence that he is gonna give an iconic film performance and one of the best sci-fi performances that I've ever seen," Lindelof told Collider.

"And not even having seen the movie yet, just sitting there in video village with the headphones on," he continued. "So I'm really psyched."

Awesome! I really can't wait to see ST2 or STXII or whatever number you want to give it. Everybody seems so smitten with Benedict's brilliant work on the movie...

But Benedict Cumberbatch aside, I hope we get some nice Kirk and Bones scenes. I know that everyone and their uncle is all about Kirk and Spock but I hope they'll keep it Kirk&Bones and Spock&Uhura with Kirk&Spock linking the team together *crosses fingers*

... Steve McQueen's Twelve Years a Slave: link. He will play the plantation owner who buys Chiwetel Ejiofor's character and is won over by his engineering skills.

Not my cuppa, this film, but what makes me all tingly inside is: BENEDICT CUMBERBATCH and MICHAEL FASSBENDER in one movie together! How awesome is that? Not planning to see it, very, VERY much not my cuppa, but CUMBERBATCH and FASSBENDER! In ONE movie! TOGETHER! Eep!

Last night, Andrew Scott won a BAFTA for his part as Moriarty in Sherlock, beating Martin Freeman in the category Supporting Actor (which I didn't really mind because Martin Freeman won a BAFTA in this category last year already). It made me really happy that he won, I WANTED him to win because his Moriarty was rockin' awesome. I know that some people didn't like his version, his portrayal of the genius professor but I did. Especially compared to Jared Harris' Moriarty in SH:AGoS - what a cold fish with no charisma! Scott's Moriarty was a sociopath and no professor but, sheesh on a pogo stick, was he scary! Not for nothing is my favorite quote from S1, "Dear Jim, please, will you fix it for me..."

But Benedict Cumberbatch didn't win. AGAIN :( Seriously, what does he have to do to win the damn thing? I mean, everybody and their uncle is tripping over their feet to get the guy, praising him for his amazing acting skills and nada for him? Two times in a row? Argh *hands*

So, joy and disappointment at the same time. And Sherlock won't be eligible for another BAFTA till 2014 *grumbles* I mean, I know that the success of a show or the greatness of an actor cannot be measured by the number of awards won but this is terribly disappointing.

Very long and very in-depth interview with Benedict Cumberbatch for Metro: link.

Of course, people are very excited about Sherlock Holmes right now — from your series to the films starring Robert Downey Jr. to the new TV series coming to CBS called “Elementary,” starring your one-time co-star, Jonny Lee Miller.

There’s room for all of us. It’s like “Hamlet” — there can be more than one going on in the world at any one time. It’s a classic role. I think all of us on that list are fortunate enough to have a varied enough career so that we’re not all just being defined by that one role. So bring it. Bring it. [Laughs.] Just bring it.

It will be fun to see what Jonny does with it, and I love what Downey Jr. does with it. I think he’s reinvented it for a younger generation in the cinema and created a fantastic sort of action-thriller franchise out of the original stories in a way very true to the original, even as they’re updating it. There are kind of polarities but I genuinely really enjoyed — I haven’t seen the second one, actually, I was very busy when it came out, but I’m dying to. I’m friends with Jared Harris, we’ve worked together, and he played Moriarty [in the Sherlock films], so there’s a lot of cross-fertilization going on — Jude [Law, who also starred in the Sherlock films] is best friends with Jonny, and all that crap. So we’re all fine.

I want it as an excuse to just knock on Downey Jr.’s door because I’m staying quite near his office in Venice [California, while Cumberbatch is filming “Star Trek”] and I just want to knock on the door and go, “I think we should have a cup of tea. We should maybe have a cup of tea and talk about this. It’s quite an odd moment in pop culture. Actually, it’s an excuse to talk to you, really, on my part, because I’m a huge fan. Hello!” [Laughs.] Just do that.

He's so incredibly sweet. And fanboyish when it comes to RDJ! But it really feels a bit incesty, doesn't it? Benedict and Jonny were together in Frankenstein, Benedict and Jared Harris were together in To the Ends of the Earth. Jude Law and Martin Freeman were together in Breaking and Entering. And Jonny Lee Miller and Jude Law are best friends... LOL! They're like one big family :P

There's an interesting interview posted on IndieWire: link. And in said interview, Benedict Cumberbatch talks, among other things, about Sherlock's sexuality:

Well, I see no reason at all why he shouldn't be sexual. Everyone recruited him to their perspective, their interpretation. I've had asexuals come up to me and thank me for representing asexuals. I don't know how that came about. I mean, the man's too busy to have sex. That's really what is it. Not every man has a sex drive that needs to be attended to. Like a lot of things in his life where he's purposely dehumanized himself, it's do to with not wanting the stuff that is time wasting, that's messy. That goes for certain relationships, as well as sexual intimacy.

I agree with him. I don't see Sherlock as asexual. Just because someone doesn't have sex, it doesn't necessarily mean they do NOT have a sex drive - speaking from a personal experience here.

Also, if he were asexual, I don't think Mycroft would use his orientation as an ammunition against him, see Mycroft's scoffing "How would you know?!" in 201. Just like Sherlock wouldn't use Mycroft's weight issues against him if they were caused by a genuine medical condition and not just stress. Because, yeah, they're snippy, they needle each other and they try to one-up each other whenever possible - but I do NOT believe that they want to genuinely hurt each other. To take each other down a peg? Ya betcha. To hit where it might hurt most? No. Because I'm convinced that they genuinely love each other, they just don't know how to show it in a "normal" way. So they pull each other's pigtails...

This is a wonderful interview with Benedict Cumberbatch: link. He seems like a genuinely warm human being, the way he talks about his friends and family...

One emotional turning point in Cumberbatch's journey to acting came when he played the role of Antonio Salieri in a university production of Peter Shaffer's Amadeus.

"My father ... turned to me," Cumberbatch recalls, "and he said, 'You're better than I ever was or could be. You should do this for a profession — I think you'd have a good time.' And that's a huge thing for a man to say to his son, and — not necessarily true, I might add, he's a wonderful actor himself — but it was so encouraging and supportive."

Cumberbatch says it was "a moment of extraordinary humility and pride" — and that from then on, the knowledge of his parents' confidence gave him the nerve to pursue acting professionally.

"It was always important to have their blessing," Cumberbatch says, "and one of the reasons I get up in the morning is to make them proud."

Aww! Could he be any sweeter?! \o/
katikat: (actors-benedictcumberbatch)
And he does it in a very classy way: YouTube link to a short MTV video. I just love his reaction, that he's "startlingly aware" of it - though Martin Freeman obviously knows much more! - but he doesn't mind. Just the opposite, he admires the time and effort fanfic and fanart authors put into their work. American actors should take notice! This is what being classy really means!

Also, on a very shallow note, he looks gorgeous in the vid. Tight jeans, a white t-shirt and a black leather jacket. And his shoes! I love his shoes! It's obvious that he filled up for his part in Star Trek, he isn't as slight as he was playing Sherlock, he has more muscle. And it suits him! What an attractive man!

And I have to wonder who told Martin Freeman where to look for stuff like that. As Benedict said, Martin used to be a luddite during S1. And suddenly, after his return from New Zealand, he was a Mac owner and knew where to find Sherlock slash... LOL, I bet the people working on The Hobbit told him about LotR slash and one thing lead to another... Ha!
katikat: (actors-benedictcumberbatch)
Benedict Cumberbatch was asked if he would have tea with Martin Crieff, his character in Cabin Pressure. His response:

"Oh God, NO! He'd spill it on himself and then I would have to clean that up for him. Then he would walk into a door and I'd have to phone an ambulance. And he'd end up hijacking the ambulance by accident, thinking it's taxi home. He's a disaster."

LOL! Poor Martin. But he really is a walking disaster ;P Said quote available with GIFs here: link.

Lovely article: link. And so funny! My favorite parts:

And while Cumberbatch's friends provided a makeshift studio in their kitchen, the actor had to make sure not to wake their sleeping children...

“[My friend and his wife have] two children asleep - they’ve got enough on their plate without this actor in a crisis in their kitchen - and she’s balancing two chairs to get the right angle on me and desk lamps bouncing light off bits of paper, just trying desperately to make it look half decent. Because it’s going to go into JJ Abrams’ iPad."

And then his: "I’m English, you’ve got to be really straight with me on this." He's so incredibly funny! I can't wait to find out what character he's playing...
katikat: (actors-benedictcumberbatch)
... in which Benedict Cumberbatch talks about his experience on the Star Trek set: link. My favorite part?

Cumberbatch shot "Sherlock" in Wales, but for "Star Trek," he's in Los Angeles, sometimes on a proper movie lot, with all the amenities that go with it -- such as catered lunches.

Asked if he's enjoying it all, Cumberbatch says, "Yeah, you betcha. It's great. I've gone up two suit sizes. The character I'm playing, he's strong, I can say that much. I've changed my physique a bit, so that requires eating like a foie gras goose, well beyond your appetite, and, providing I don't feel too ill, I then work out two hours a day with a phenomenal trainer. It's the L.A. way."

Foie gras goose? LOL! He's so incredibly sweet and funny! You just have to love the guy. I really can't wait to see him in the movie. Especially since everybody and their uncle is praising his voice work - I just adore his voice, it makes me all tingly ;)

Benedict Cumberbatch and Jonny Lee Miller won the Olivier Award for their roles in the Frankenstein play: link. How awesome is that?

As the article says:

Writing about their different, exceptional performances in Frankenstein, Official London Theatre commented: “Miller finds a child-like wonder in the young creature discovering his ability to move, clutching at his feet and laughing with unrestrained joy as he runs, while Cumberbatch imbues him instead with more animalistic, almost prehistoric tendencies.”

Interesting. Theater's not my thing, I'm more of a cinema girl, but I think... I think if I had gone see this play, I would've chosen Benedict as Frankenstein and Jonny as the Monster, the performance, I mean...

Jonny Lee Miller accepted the award for both of them because Benedict couldn't attend - and he looked dashing: link.

Inseparable is a short movie - only 10 min. long - about two brothers, identical twins.

Joe and...

... Charlie.

They are completely different, as different as they can be, but their love for each other is undeniable. When Joe becomes sick, he calls his brother Charlie, a drifter, and offers him a new chance...

Spoilers! )

Did anyone see it? I have so many questions!

What co-writer/producer of Star Trek Alex Kurtzman said about Benedict Cumberbatch: link.

"He’s incredible," Kurtzman said. "What he does with language is incredible. His training is amazing and he’s so magnetic, he holds the screen in any size frame, he really is a joy to watch."

I now can't wait to find out who Benedict is playing in ST. Everybody keeps praising his vocal qualities - and I agree, I SO agree! - so it must be a big part of his character, right?

And speaking of voices, I finally watched Matt Bomer's cover in Glee: link. Gosh, he has a gorgeous voice! I want to roll in the pretty!

But am I the only one who isn't sure if this song is appropriate to be sung by BROTHERS? *hides*
katikat: (actors-benedictcumberbatch)
Finally managed to watch Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy. Well. Hm. On the one hand, they made most of the characters more interesting/likable than in the book - on the other hand, they managed to make the story even more boring and confusing, which is a real feat, something I thought nobody could actually accomplish.

So many stars in one movie, established and well known stars like John Hurt, Colin Firth, Mark Strong and Gary Oldman - and yet, it was Benedict Cumberbatch and Tom Hardy who made a lasting impression on me. Though Benedict looked... weird with blond hair:

Good things:

1) Benedict Cumberbatch as Peter Guillam - and Peter as a really likable, not!pathetic human being. His was actually the one scene that really moved me, him breaking up with his lover. That made me really like the film!Peter - the book!Peter was downright pathetic.

2) Tom Hardy as Ricki Tarr. In the book, Tarr was an arrogant know-it-tall but in the movie, I actually felt for him!

3) The relationship between Smiley and Peter:

In the film, you felt that Smiley actually cared about Peter, about what would happen to him, they seemed like real friends, they could trust each other and only each other and they did. And there was nothing Peter wouldn't have done for Smiley. And it was wonderful.

4) In the movie, you actually saw that Bill Haydon had feelings for Jim Prideaux, that he cared, really cared. Sure, in the book he blew the whole net to get him back but it was the small gesture of Haydon taking the photograph that proved he wasn't just using Jim.

Bad things:

1) Contrary to how the writers changed Peter's character, Smiley remained a love-sick, pathetic fool. I mean, his wife slept with his colleague - in the book, she slept with everybody - and yet, she remained his blind spot. Seriously?

2) The first 90 minutes dragged on like whoa! But at least the last half-hour offered some suspense.

3) Without knowing the book, you are basically lost because so many things get muddled in the transition. Like, for example, who is actually Peter Guillam - maybe I missed something but I didn't notice them mentioning he was the head of the scalphunters. And many other things that would've made me all head-scratchy if I hadn't read the book first.
