Rec me a show. A show that isn't on air anymore but it ~is~ out on DVD. An old show that you think I absolutely need to see. I've seen many, ~many~ shows so it's possible that I've seen it already, but it doesn't matter. Let's share the love together! *group hug*

And my rec? Sports Night, of course! crack_van's introduction. And my favorite clip from the show :) And my favorite Dan/Casey fic: "Not Homophobic".

So, rec away, my dear friends! :)

Ah, that one I haven't seen. What is it about? Why do you like it so much? *curious*

It's a Canadian drama/comedy. It ran for three seasons, but each season only consists of a few episodes, so it's not a huge undertaking to watch it. ;)

It's about a small theater company. In season 1, they're doing Hamlet, in season 2, they're doing Macbeth, in season 3, they're doing King Lear. It's about the producers, the directors (dead and alive!) and the actors (both the stars and the bit-players), and about the plays themselves. It's about conflict and love and madness, and it's got an amazing amount of heart. I love it because it's funny and because of the amazing actors. Especially Paul Gross, as the director with a mental condition, is memorable. He's just got so much presence.

I guess that someone who absolutely loathes theater and Shakespeare might dislike it, but it's not like you need a BA in English to appreciate the humor and the heart-break of what goes on behind the scenes on a small-town theater company.

That sounds quite awesome! It reminds me of Chuck Zito's "Nicky D'Amico Mysteries", the main hero works in a theater too and the characters are so wacky there!

Thank you for the tip! :)

The Adventures of Brisco County Jr. It was brilliant, and ahead of its time.

That one was so funny! I remember that Kelly Rutherford - who's now on Gossip Girl - played his love interest, right?

She did. I thought she was gorgeous in it, too.

Have you ever watched any of the Blackadder series? It's a little silly, but I enjoyed it very much. Young Hugh Laurie is very cute.

Freaks and Geeks. One of the best television shows EVER, so of course it was cancelled after less than a season. But it is on DVD with a million cool extras. It doesn't have any really conventionally attractive stars but that just makes it all the more realistic. And the writing is just incredible; it's like Supernatural in that one episode can cover the entire emotional gamut from funny to devastated.

That sounds really cool! I will have to check it out. I think I saw some pics from the show and I recognized some of the authors :)

Hell, I tend to collect series that never made it past a season or 2 - maybe not even a full season:

Miracles (http://www.amazon.com/Miracles-Complete-Skeet-Ulrich/dp/B0007N1AM2/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=dvd&qid=1256332821&sr=1-1). Here's the entry (http://community.livejournal.com/ship_manifesto/158052.html) on [livejournal.com profile] ship_manifesto.

Space: Above and Beyond (http://www.amazon.com/Space-Above-Beyond-Morgan-Weisser/dp/B000BCCAEQ/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=dvd&qid=1256333251&sr=1-1)
Jeremiah (http://www.amazon.com/Jeremiah-Complete-Season-Luke-Perry/dp/B0000V4910/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=dvd&qid=1256333305&sr=1-1)

Kindred: The Embraced (http://www.amazon.com/Kindred-Embraced-Complete-Vampire-Collection/dp/630589941X/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=dvd&qid=1256333372&sr=1-1) which never got past the original 8 episodes because one of the lead actors died.

The Young Riders (http://www.amazon.com/Young-Riders-Complete-First-Season/dp/B000E3L7FA/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=dvd&qid=1256333601&sr=1-1)

Heh, I'm nothing if not eclectic. *G*

I've loved The Young Riders. My favorite rider was Kit! I loved the ep where he was kidnapped by the chief's half-brother!

Space was interesting but so depressive :(

Kindred was awesome! I love Mark Frankel as Julian Luna!

I don't know Jeremiah or Miracles, will have to check it out!

There are torrents for both series if you want a peak or if you'd like I can upload the first episode of each to Megaupload.

Last time I checked, yeah. Netflix has S2 as a coming attraction but it's been that way for a while.

I know I only have links for S1 of Jeremiah through - I think - ep 11 or 12. I got sidetracked. Have you watched all of them? Do you do torrents at all? If not I'll be glad to finish downloading the rest of S1 and upload it on to Megaupload with the rest. I'm going to do it anyway and I can probably get it done on Sunday. I'm going to do the same with S2 also but it'll take a little longer. Just let me know. I'm spending most of the day sitting at the computer anyway. *G*

Yup, I do use BT, actually for all my shows. I can get the show that way - I just pouted because it isn't out on DVD in its entirety. I mean, every stupid canceled thing is out on DVD these days! Hmpf! I hate it when the studios bring out S1 on DVD and then just stop. It's like with The Sentinel - S1 is out and that's it! Hmpf!

There's just something about watching a series on original DVDs, it's a different experience somehow, I don't even know why *shrugs* Maybe because it gives me the feeling that I'm actually supporting the show? Who knows.

The Pretender (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Pretender_%28TV_series%29). Awesome show with awesome characters. Also has two movies after the show ended, The Pretender 2001 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Pretender_2001) and Island of the Haunted (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Pretender:_Island_of_the_Haunted). As great as the show it, I think they thought they were going to get another movie or something because there is no wrap-up or end, only more questions. But don't let that stop you!

Actually, this is making me want to go back and watch some eps. :D

I used to watch The Pretender. I loved the chemistry between Jarod and Miss Parker. But around S4 the show's mythology got so complicated and convoluted... X(

From: [identity profile] twilight-angel.livejournal.com
Their chemistry was amazing. Yeah, the mythology did get complicated and I hate how it didn't so much end as open up way too many more questions. Nevertheless, I still think it's good enough to rec.

Oh! I just saw the reply below mine, and I totally second Nero Wolfe. I love that series to bits! <3

Hoepfully you'll like this but A Nero Wolfe Mystery from 2001. Stylish, funny, smart and gorgeously produced detective series based on fantastic books from Rex Stout. One of the best book to series adaptations I have ever seen and in my personal opinion one of the best shows ever produced on TV. It's about a detective named Nero Wolfe and his assistant Archie Goodwin with an ensemble cast (bit players come back in different parts which I love because they're *fantastic* actors but it may bug some people?) it's set roughly in the 30s-60s and it's just oh, utter love. Timothy Hutton played Archie Goodwin by the by and produced the series. :)

I can get you an episode to sample if you'd like before you go and buy dvds? Also I've always wondered, there are rumors that the extended episodes and widescreen editions are available only via region two, is that right?

Date: 2009-10-25 12:57 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] katikat.livejournal.com
If you could, I would be grateful! The show sounds like something I might like :)

ETA: I checked Amazon UK and they don't carry Nero Wolf at all :( So I don't know about the extended version...
