After watching the premiere of Amanda Tapping's new series Sanctuary, I have to say that it boils down to the fact that basically, it's a crossover between Poltergeist: The Legacy and Torchwood. It's not bad but it's also not riveting. It might turn out to be a good show, if you suspend your disbelief a bit. But the most stunning thing? Joel Goldsmith's music. That man is a master! Wow!
Helen's recruitment of Will was so a copy of Daniel Jackson's introduction to the Stargate program. Almost literally a carbon copy. And Dr. Zimmerman is basically Sanctuary's Daniel, blond hair, glasses and his past included. I fear that if they don't introduce a Will-specific quirk soon, the similarity might turn out to be, in long term, too much.
I loved all the quest stars! Kavan Smith aka SGA's Maj. Lorne! Can we keep him? Chris Heyerdahl aka SGA's Halling and Todd the Wraith! That man has to add some weight though. He looked like a cancer patient, all gaunt.
The main characters... Well, Helen Magnus aka Amanda Tapping is interesting. The whole embryo thing was a bit of a dancing on the edge of jumping the shark though. The jury is still out on Ashley. Will is... a bit bland, more spunk is needed. Henry... Heh, Henry is basically this show's McKay, just a bit mellower - and yay if it isn't Ryan Robbins aka SGA's Ladon Radim!
I hope that they keep up the tendency of bringing over SGA's stars and guest stars. That would be awesome!
So yeah, I will be downloading and watching next week too, although I wasn't really floored by the show. But it does have its own specific... atmosphere.

Date: 2008-10-06 07:19 am (UTC)I think that Will and Daniel are way too similar. Both lost their parents in their childhood, both turned to science because of that, both were ridiculed because of their teories, both were hired because of their teories, both were hired by a woman in a limo and in the novelization of Stargate the movie, Catherine even waited for Daniel in the evening in the rain outside... And then there's their physical appearance. Too many similarities...
But I really do hope that they will keep bringing over Stargate actors. It's fun to see them together again on a different show :)
