Title: Jupiter Ascending (2015)

Cast: Channing Tatum, Mila Kunis, Sean Bean, Eddie Redmayne

Rating: 6/10

Visually stunning spectacle with little substance. The CGI was amazing. Top notch. The effects felt so real, it was UNreal. Rarely have I seen such original creations, like these planets, ships, technology. Truly wonderful and worth seeing on the big screen.

But! Yes, the characters are very likable, both Jupiter and Caine. And the story seems intriguing. But in this movie, story telling definitely falls victim to the visual side. There are so many things just hinted at but never drawn to their conclusion. Like, spoilers! )

Which brings me to the ending: spoilers! )

So yeah, I was a bit disappointed. It reminded me of 47 Ronins: a visual feast that left me feeling unsatisfied because it squandered its potential.

Title: Lockout (2012)

Cast: Guy Pearce, Maggie Grace

Rating: 7/10

It's your usual hostage movie. The US president's daughter is taken hostage in a prison facility. One guy is sent in to rescue her. The twist? The prison is on a space station in Earth's orbit, a real fortress that's slowly falling down into the atmosphere after a collision with the international space station. The special effects are fantastic and the action pretty swift.

Neither Emilie or Snow are exactly likable at first but as you slowly get to know them, you get to understand the why behind their actions and they both end up being fantastically kick-ass. My favorite scene was, hands down, the moment when the prisoners were trying to force Emilie to convince her father to let them go, threatening to shoot her - and instead, she told her father over the radio to just blow them out of the sky because no hostage was getting out of there alive anyway. That was awesome, her coldly furious glare into the leader's eyes while she said that. Wow! Amazing.
