Some time ago, me and a friend of mine had a bit of a row about movies based on computer games. She stanned for Resident Evil, I for Doom. The thing is, she said that in game movies, characters were disposable, the movie just had to feel like a computer game. I, on the other hand, couldn't care less if the movie is faithful to the game, I need characters to root for. We agreed on disagreeing, obviously. Doom is in no way an excellent movie. It's an average sci-fi action flick with some very cheesy scenes (like the shooting sequence, shown from Reaper's POV, I could have really done without that!) but! It has amazing characters. By the end of the movie, I felt like I knew them. They were all so perfectly drawn, every one of them had a personality. And though I didn't like some of them - I loved the Sarge at the beginning, just not what became of him :( - I adored Reaper and Samantha and I so, so rooted for them to survive! The character I felt most sorry for was Duke. Duke was awesome!
I also liked the boot camp the actors had gone through which is one of the bonus features on the DVD. It's fun watching them bond...
And speaking of Reaper, I really need to read some Reaper!Bones ST:Reboot fics...
