Some time ago, I bought State of Play, the BBC mini-series, on DVD for just Ł2 incl. shipping, so I decided to watch it again. Well, the bits and pieces with James McAvoy who has always been the main draw for me here. Also, a) when you know what's going on, all the twists and turns of the series, it loses a bit of its intrigue and b) I'm still put off by the main hero's affair with the suspect's/his best friend's wife - as his editor in chief said, it was unprofessional and simply wrong - and Della whining all the time. And that's why, James McAvoy's scenes re-watch it was!

He's amazing, so, so amazing as Dan Foster! Dan had all the funny scenes in the series, lending it a much needed levity. Loved his banter with his father, that was awesome. And there were so many actors who starred in other movies with James McAvoy later on! Like Bill Nighy, playing his father here, then later on his grandfather in Arthur Christmas! Or David Morrissey, playing their object of interest here, later on starring in Welcome to the Punch with him.

If you haven't seen it yet, do. It's really good! The surprise twist at the end was quite shocking.

That film? Is nuts! Buckets o' crazy, seriously. But also awesome. Wanted, I mean, the movie about...

... Wesley, the account manager turned assassin (James McAvoy) and...

... Fox, the assassin who's in charge of him (Angelina Jolie).

I liked that the movie didn't even try to pretend that the Fraternity was pristine and lilly white, they were killers and innocent people got hurt in their line of work. Sure, they tried to avoid it but what was one life compared to the thousands they thought they were saving, right?

Oh my, James McAvoy in this film... *_* That body of his!

Wow, just wow. He had some moves in this film, let me tell you! It actually reminded me of Children of Dune, of that last fight scene in the throne room, where he kicked the asses of his aunt's personal guards!

I was really sad when... )

And I found this article where Angelina Jolie - who was awfully skinny in this movie, ick! - revealed that she took the part of Fox because she wanted to act alongside James McAvoy: "Then I heard they were casting James McAvoy and I thought, 'That sounds really unusual'. Everyone thinks of him as this sweet, fun guy - which he is - but he's also from Scotland, and that's a tough place." 8)

Oh, and Marc Warren was in this! Who was with James McAvoy in State of Play. Heh. And they filmed it here, in my country! That was the Pendolino train that I always take to Prague!

You know, the new movie that James McAvoy's filming with Mark Strong right now? The one called Welcome To The Punch? David Morrissey joined the cast. He and James were together in State of Play before:

David played the main part, James was a supporting actor in the series. Now, it's the other way around. Small world.

It kind of reminds me of the British TV series State of Play - the deeper they dig, the more filth they uncover *shudders*

And just because: a James McAvoy State of Play pic spam!

20 pictures cut! )

Isn't he just cute?! *pinches his cheeks* ;P

I was so surprised by the twist at the very end. Just when I thought everything was solved, bam O.o I really didn't expect that, the reason why Sonia Baker was killed in the first place. Wow. Good job, writers.

I was also glad that Della finally pulled herself together and Cal finally understood what a dick he was being and that Anne wasn't worth it. I cheered when he got fed up with her and told her that no self-respecting woman would go back to Stephen after everything he had done to her. I totally agreed with him, all the "I'm doing it for the kids" stuff was a big pile of crap, IMHO - I hate it when women use that line to have an excuse to not pull themselves together and leave their jerk of a husband.

To sum it up, my main draw in this series was James McAvoy, of course...

... And his character's, Dan's, relationship with his father. Too bad there wasn't more about that in the mini-series. But I did like the little smile they exchanged across the newsroom at the end, when the story was hitting the press!

Aaaaaand I'm done with State of Play.

Man, I'm enjoying the show more than I thought I would. Yeah, I still don't like Cal - he deserved to be fired on spot for what he did, it was so unethical it set my teeth on edge! - and if Della stopped complaining, I would be much happier, but it's fun to watch the team untangle all the threads.

But mostly, I enjoy Dan, Helen, Pete and Cameron - and Sid, for that matter - being awesomely awesome together! For me, they are the heart of the show, not Cal or Della or that cheating politician. Oh, and hey, it's that blond guy from Hustle!

I LOL'd when Sid told them proudly - and in detail - how he seduced Dominic. Man, they had a blast listening to it. And Cameron's "I'm not talking about Foy... toy... boy... sex... shock knock!" And then, when Cameron told Dan that his one-time journalism lecturer worked for the company they were investigating! That she used to have a weakness for "twitchy young undergraduates" and the laugh Dan and his dad shared, LOL! Oh, and Cameron didn't mind Dan calling him 'dad' at the office, ha!

You know, boiled down, I think I'm enjoying Cameron, the chief editor, and his son Dan most as characters. Cameron rocks, seriously, the way he handles the cops and all the problems his staff tends to cause. And Dan, I adore that, even though he's the only freelance there, he has the most calming, charming presence of all of them, keeping the team together when they start snipping at each other. And it's adorable how much he loves his wife :) I would've preferred if the show focused on those two rather than on I-can't-keep-it-in-my-pants!Cal and whiny!Della.

Started watching the British mini-series State of Play because of James McAvoy. Yes, I'm broadening my horizons thanks to him - but I refuse to watch movies a) where his character dies (and his characters die A LOT!) and b) that are too depressing (like The Last King of Scotland). So, State of Play it was for me...

It's an interesting series about a group of journalists that uncovers a conspiracy. The thing is, I don't like Cal and Della, the main characters, much. Cal's compromising his integrity way too much and Della is a chicken-shit, for an investigative reporter, that is. I like the secondary characters much better, like Helen, Pete or Cameron. And of course, James McAvoy's Dan.

For me, the show got really going with his introduction and not just because of him as an actor. His character brought in a much needed levity and I adore Dan's relationship with his father, Cameron. The funniest scene so far was when Cal and Della convinced Cameron to hire Dan and Cameron complained about his son and about his son's wife and about everything! That was so funny and Cal and Della couldn't contain their laughter.

Another thing is that with the introduction of Dan, the show's pace picked up because Dan's able to get information out of a stone! I had to laugh when he pulled off his wedding ring and went to flirt with the copy-shop guy to get info out of him. James McAvoy flirting with a guy... *_* You know, for a married man Dan has a finely tuned gay-dar.

A good show so far, I think. 4 eps to go :)
