Just finished "Redemption" by esteefee, read by librarychick_94. It's an SGA podfic that combines my two favorite things: an AU setting and Sentinels! John as a Sentinel and Rodney as his more than reluctant Guide. It's intense and funny and librarychick's reading is simply wonderful! It's 3hr. 30min. and just a wonderful way to spend a rainy Sunday!

YAY, the whole "Retrograde" series by Martha Wilson was finally turned into podfics! And that meant, I needed to listen to it! Tonight, it was...

"Retrograde" AKA part 1 of the series | Gen | The Atlantis expedition has been lost for three years. SG-1 goes to find them, and arrives just a little too late. | 2hr. 40min.

"It's a good thing we're not actually holding anybody hostage, because apparently we're crap at it."

Hammond lifted a brow. "'We'?"

Man, I adore this series! I wish the series had gone in this direction... And now I feel like re-watching SGA, the good episodes, of course, no Brainstorm and other crap like that. Or finally read all the tie-ins that I own...

A few days ago, I wrote about the John Sheppard/Rodney McKay pairing in the 30 Days Couple Challenge I joined. And it made me realize just how much I missed these guys. I wanted to visit them again and enjoy their company and listen to them bicker and banter once more. And what better way there is than through podfics? So, I visited the audio archive and I'm now going from the longest podfics backwards!

I skipped "In the City of Seven Walls" by auburn, read by general_jinjur (17+ hours). It's a really well written fic and perfectly read by general_jinjur - but also way, WAY too depressing. Once was enough for me.

Right now, I'm listening to "Gypsies, Tramps and Thieves" by auburn, read by fayjay (18+ hours). What a lovely, amazing, fantastic, great, PERFECT fic/podfic! Vala, John (Jehan) and Rodney (Mer) as space pirates, damaged by the Goua'uld, yet stronger because of that. Jehan and Mer's relationship is simply fabulous in this, the perfect cornerstone for the whole fic! I'm only 3 hours in, so I still have 15 hours of goodness to go! *cheers*

So, I'm playing Bejeweled here and listening to an SGA podfic. The perfect way to relax...

"The Roads Never Lead Where They're Supposed To Go" by eleveninches, read by reena_jenkins | McKay/Sheppard | AU | A slightly different John and Rodney, in a slightly different Atlantis, fight Marines, dinosaurs, and each other. | 2hr. 40min.

"Just to make sure," Rodney said to Sheppard, "you see the giant lizard too, right?"

"I think it's a dinosaur," Sheppard said slowly.

"Oh, well, in that case--"

What a hilarious fic. Can you imagine Sheppard as a BOTANIST? Oh, the horror. And the way reena_jenkins reads it! LOL, seriously!

I'm not sure if I already rec'd this or not, but what the heck, I love it! :)

"Rodney McKay's Diary" by rageprufrock, read by twilight | John/Rodney | Dear Dr. Bronson, due to your court-mandated supervisory position over me and your subsequent ridiculous assignment to keep a journal in order to monitor my "progress" you are undoubtedly reading this. | 6.950 words/55 min.

THEN John followed General O'Neill down into the super classified totally not supposed to exist and you are definitely not supposed to be here labs and poked a chair which just rolled over and moaned for him -- which you know, I can't blame the fucking chair -- before he made the most beautiful image of the universe float above us all with his a thought.

LOL! Seriously. LOL!

"Gypsies, Tramps, and Thieves" by auburn, read by fayjay | John/Rodney and others | AU of both SGA and SG-1 | Vala Mal Doran and her partners, renegades Jehan abd-Ba'al and Meredith McKay, hijack the Tau'ri ship Prometheus and leave the Milky Way behind in search of the Lost City of the Ancients, Atlantis.| ~181.000 words/19 hr. 16 min.

The wraith laughed and opened its hand. Jehan stumbled back, coughed, and fingered the tiny wound at his throat. He was barely bleeding. Something in the feel of the cell changed; sound grew sharper, colors clearer, and the others were suddenly surrounding him, aware of something happening and pulling him further away from the wraith. Jehan thought it must have released whatever telepathic voodoo it had been exerting against everyone else.

Mer lurched over and grabbed John's elbow. He pulled until John's hand, smeared with his own blood, came away from his neck and stared. "What the hell just happened?" Mer demanded.

"Allies," the wraith said. "Allies. Open the gates, let loose the dogs of war."

What an amazing fic! Wow, I'm smitten, peeps, smitten. The last SGA/SG-1 fic I enjoyed this much was "Retrograde" by Martha Wells. Wow, reading fics like that, you realize just what a potential the writers of SGA wasted...

"Bell Curve, or, Ladies Night at the Boom Boom Room" by pru, read by 2naonh3_cl2 | McKay/Sheppard | AU, humor | In his rational mind, Rodney knew that following a girl who'd just dumped you into a strip club was really, really pathetic. | ~40.000 words/4hrs 7mins.

Rodney glared at both of them and returned to the lights, which turned out to be futile because two hours later when John and Jeannie had already otherwise decorated the tree between themselves and Rodney was still futzing with the wires and peering hatefully at the string of blinky lights, John said, "Oh, hey, there's a bulb missing!" after which he screwed it on and half-blinded Rodney in one eye when the whole damn rope of light exploded into schizophrenically cheerful red and green blinking.

This story is hilarious from the beginning till the end. And I just love 2naonh3_cl2's reading. Go, download, listen, LAUGH!

ETA: And the sequel: "Learning Curve, or, Tab".

"Coulda Shoulda Woulda" by liketheriverrun, read by revolutionaryjo. Gen. Summary: Caring for your injured CO isn't the easiest job for a Marine. And Sheppard's isn't the only team on Atlantis. Length: ~8.000 words/41min.

We finally gave Bernie a bear whistle after he got lost for the third time while taking a piss behind a tree, just so we could find him. Delph even made him up a GPS map of Atlantis showing all the key points...and to give him shit about his lack of direction. To pay him back, Bernie filled his bed with plastic spiders, because Scott gets the heeby jeebies if you recite Little Miss Muffet in his presence. Paulie gets faint at the sight of blood, but when I fell down a hill and ended up nicking an artery in my leg, he sat by my side and told me the stupidest knock knock jokes he could come up with while Bernie applied the compress to slow the bleeding until Scott could bring help from Atlantis. And as soon as the medics showed up, Paul moved off into the trees and sat with Bernie with his head between his knees so he wouldn’t faint. Everyone has their weaknesses and every team leader knows what they are for the people under his command. And, yeah, they’re fair game for ribbing for those on the team. But I guarantee if someone else had put those spiders in Scott’s bed, or gave Bernie shit about his lousy sense of direction, or goaded Paulie about nearly passing out, there would have been hell to pay. And you better believe Sheppard feels the same way about the members of his team.

I love the outsider's POV in this fic. The OCs are incredibly likable and so well-round, three-dimensional...

"Share" by rageprufrock, read by twilight. Gen, but really slashy in a John/Rodney codependent way. Summary: After Return, Rodney can't get used to living on Earth. And so he bothers John. A lot. Length: ~10.000 words/1hr 27mins.

The jokes about Dr. and Mrs. Sheppard had been making the rounds on Atlantis for ages, a sort of absentminded jocular kidding that had snuck up on them all so slowly that Rodney had stopped—abruptly and surprised at himself—in the middle of a joke about John always having a headache before he’d realized it had happened. Even then, nobody really talked about it all that much; if gate team one was in any sort of marital relationship, it was one of the really Mormon ones.

Still, Rodney knows he and Sheppard are the Odd Couple are the Honeymooners, and so when John starts making nagging, wifey noises when they pull off of the local roads and onto the highway, all he can think is, He wasn’t anywhere this bitchy when we first got together.

This is so funny. And rather sad at the same time. But still funny :)

"Rodney McKay's Diary" by pru, read by twilight. John/Rodney. Summary: AU. Dear Dr. Bronson, due to your court-mandated supervisory position over me and your subsequent ridiculous assignment to keep a journal in order to monitor my "progress" you are undoubtedly reading this. Length: ~6.900 words/55min.

Sheppard found me in the labs and told me he'd be fine and I should chill out. I don't believe him as far as I could throw him and just to spite him, I've decided to stop having a crush on him because he's clearly a liability and has the self-preservation instincts of a gnat.

Ha! Rodney is a crazy, crazy person. And so much fun :P

"Small Primes and Square Roots" by Livia, read by cookiemom6067. John/Jeannie, John/Rodney. Summary: "I hope you picked someone really intelligent, otherwise it seems like it would be kind of a waste. Of incubation time, if nothing else." Length: 1hr 13min.

Oh, lovely, Rodney thought, Fantastic. Perfect. She'd probably picked some football player or firefighter or something equally cliched and ridiculous. She was going to pop out some hairy little terror who would enjoy torturing small animals. "Hey, whatever," he said, "as long as you're happy, I suppose."

I love this fic, one of my favorite SGA AUs!
katikat: (Default)
"Raiders of the Seven Systems" by Martha Wilson, read by cathexys. Gen. Summary: AU. John Sheppard leads a crew of Athosian space pirates in the Pegasus Galaxy. They rescue Earth refugees Rodney McKay and Sam Carter, but then things get complicated. Length: 3hrs.

Before Teyla could speak, the voice at the other end said, "Hey there. Am I talking to the Athosian pirates?"

John was a little startled to recognize the voice. It was the older guy, the one with the Ancient gene, who had seemed to be the leader. John said, warily, "Uh, yeah."

There was a brief silence. Then the voice said, "Parlay."

Okay, I heard that wrong, John thought. The others looked baffled. John said, "Excuse me?"

Martha Wilson really is the queen of adventurous team fics in this fandom. Raiders and Retrograde both have just the right amount of adventure, humor and h/c and cathexys' reading is so clean and fresh that it's a delight to listen to it!

ETA: Please, someone, smack me silly! Why haven't I realized that Martha Wilson was actually Martha Wells? As in, the author Martha Wells? *head/desk*

"Recovery" by Martha Wilson, read by lunate8. Gen. Summary: Sequel to Retrograde. Atlantis recovers after the attack, and the Daedalus prepares to leave with most of SG-1. Length: 2hrs. 55mins.

He thought it was a lot more likely that Jack would be scourging the SGC for somebody with the guts to be Sheppard's 2IC. That was going to be fun. Yeah, it's a posting in another galaxy, your CO can control parts of the city with his mind, and your subordinates will include fanatically loyal native commandos and some scary-ass Marines who will frag you if you look at him the wrong way. Oh, and watch out for the scientists, they all have PTSD and they'll kill you too.

This fic is simply incredible. It's suspenseful and humorous and full of action and team and all the characters are so in-character!

"Retrograde" by Martha Wilson, read by kyizi. Gen. Summary: The Atlantis expedition has been lost for three years. SG-1 goes to find them, and arrives just a little too late. Length: 2hrs 50mins.

"For the love of-- Dammit!" Jack cut off the comm and stared at it in helpless frustration. "Now they're all down there. How did that happen?" he said to Hammond.

"Now you know how I felt all those years," Hammond answered, not sympathetically.

"It's a good thing we're not actually holding anybody hostage, because apparently we're crap at it."

This is one of my favorite - if not THE favorite - strictly gen stories in this fandom. Martha Wilson simply rocks at narrating an adventure in a very engaging way. I just wish that she was writing tie-in novels for SGA - and that the show itself had gone in this direction *sigh*

Off to listen to the sequel!

Another podbang rec:

SLASH -->McShep, AU: "The Neighborly Detective and the Tragic Woobie Widower" by elayna, read by cookiemom6067. Summary: Detective John Sheppard starts his new life in suburbia and becomes steadily captivated by his neighbor, Dr. Rodney McKay, and his son Timothy. Length: 49.800 words/5hrs 46mins.

"Why are you dating me? If you were never interested in guys before?"

"Who said I wasn't? And hello, genius? Absurdly hot neighbor think I'm attractive and wants to fall in my bed and teach my son all those stupid macho things other people think he ought to learn, am I going to be so stupid as to say no?"

"Not you," John agreed amiably, smiling goofily.

I love this fic to pieces. The very beginning, how he meets Timothy and then Rodney with his "transvestism is perfectly fine" and accusing John of being in denial. Ha! So funny!

So, I started listening to stories posted in Amplificathon!

SLASH --> McShep, AU: "The Long Engagement" by omg_wtf_yeah, read twtd. Summary: McShep Steampunk!Atlantis AU. John is the leader of the Sheppard Circus Company. Lost in their travels, the troupe happens on the hidden city of Atlantis where McKay is the mistrustful leader of the Lanteans. Length: 51.000 words/4hrs 43mins.

John shook his head and propped his hands on his sweat-slick hips. He raised his face to the sky and thought of what had brought them there – he thought of McKay and Jennifer, of the time Rodney and he had spent together, how they'd fought. Despite how hard he'd pushed him, McKay had always pushed back. John's heart pained him as he contemplated the road away from Atlantis and McKay.

Quite an original story, let me tell you. I've never read steam punk before :P

Another great oldie!

SLASH --> McShep, AU: "A Place On The Corner" by almostnever, read by rhea314. Summary: Some things are worth waiting for. Length: 59 mins.

"Look, you appear to be outwardly healthy, so the slowness, the drawl, is it some kind of neurological disorder? Abulia? Chronic fatigue syndrome? Erythromelalgia? I've given up on getting breakfast in a timely manner, so now I'm just asking out of concern for your personal well-being. I know a very good doctor, I'm sure he could help with your terrible affliction."

I just love, LOVE the banter in this fic!

Also, Amplificathon went online! Eeeeeee! So many great podfics!

SLASH --> McShep: "Oblivious" by astolat, read by jenwryn. Summary: In which Rodney and John fail to pay attention. Length: 8.200 words/54 mins.

Sometime later, Rodney rolled off him and flopped back onto the pillows. "So," he said yawning, "you meant top as in from the bottom?"

So funny and cute and I just love fics where one of them thinks that they're dating while the other has no idea at all.

One thing that irks a bit - the audio fic is well read, but too quiet. I had to really pump up the volume so everything else that went on on my computer at the that time made a huge racket. I really hate it when podfic readers make fics too silent - and then turn up the volume, so the recording buzzes and hums and whatnot :(
katikat: (Default)
SLASH --> McShep, AU: "Plan C, or How Rodney McKay Lost His Wife and Gained a Galaxy", written and read by toomuchplor. Summary: When dot com billionaire Rodney McKay learns that his soon-to-be-ex-wife, the beautiful and brilliant Samantha Carter, has taken up with a new man, he resolves to come between them any way he can. Can Rodney use his manly powers of seduction to lure handsome John Sheppard out of his wife's bed and into his? And, most importantly, who will get custody of the cat in the divorce? Length: 9.000 words/56 mins.

Rodney kicked back the covers and scrambled to the edge of the mattress. "No, no, you do not get to reject the naked man in your bed!" he said, irritated now. "And don't go feeding me some bullshit line about how you don't do guys because, a) you're wearing sweatpants that have pink writing across the ass, and b) the day Sam seriously dates a guy who might be, in any way, manlier than her, I'll die of the shock." He paused. "Also? Need I add, c) your hair?"

*giggle fit* Poor Yoshi the Cat XD I love SGA AU fics!

... are part one and two of the "Jump to the Left" series written by princess_bunny aka glitterandlube and read by onetimeoffer. They are hilarious. Basically, it's an AU series - locked, deleted and available only in podfic-form - in which John and Rodney meet when they are 11 and they go through their lives together in a very funny way.

Parts for download: "Mr. Fantastic And Einstein's Wife" and "Snapshots".

I just love those two tiny ficlets. I listen to them every time I feel down and they never fail to make me smile!
