James McAvoy & Benedict Cumberbatch!

OMG! It looks like James McAvoy might join Benedict Cumberbatch in the new Julian Assange movie! *crosses both fingers and toes* Deadline.com reported that James was "in deep negotiations" to play Daniel Domscheit-Berg, Assange's right-hand man!

Over the summer we learned that DreamWorks was looking at Jeremy Renner to lead their untitled drama about WikiLeaks and Julian Assange, the founder of the headline-making website which came under fire for exposing secret government information through leaked, classified documents, e-mails, cables and more. However, Sherlock star and Star Trek Into Darkness villain Benedict Cumberbatch has taken the lead role instead. In addition, Variety reports James McAvoy is now in talks to play Assange's former right-hand man Daniel Domscheit-Berg, who wrote one of the books on which the feature film is based.

Domscheit-Berg started working with Assange back in 2007, but ended up leaving the site years later after seeing that Assange failed to uphold any respect for journalistic integrity. It's believed that his departure from WikiLeaks resulted in Assange's release of over 250,000 classified diplomatic cables from the United States. In his book, there's plenty of criticism about Assange's handling of the Afghan War Diaries and more. The film will also take this angle as it portrays Assange first as a noble crusader and then a man becomes "drunk with power as he grows increasingly paranoid and obsessed with winning the war of information."

Source

Please, let it be so! PLEEEEEEAAAAAASE! I want to see James and Benedict in another movie together so much. Personally, I'm not a fan of what Assange's doing, not at all, IMHO, some things need to stay secret for the protection of innocents. But with these two as leads, I would really love to see the movie!

US elections; Jared Leto

I'm not even American and I'm almost hysterically happy that Obama won. Don't get me wrong, he disappointed me in so many ways, he didn't fulfill so many of his promises and I guess I'm not the only one who expected much more from him - maybe too much? - but! I did not want to see Mitt Romney in the White House, a man who's so anti-gay, anti-women, anti-equality of any kind, a man who became the laughing stock of half of Europe when he came over during his presidential campaign because he had no idea whatsoever what he was talking about... If nothing else, I consider Barack Obama the lesser of two evils, so to speak. And his speeches about women's rights and marriage equality made me proud of him, so... Yeah, this whole thing was not at all about me and I couldn't do anything to influence it in any way but it still made me insanely happy to see that Romney prick booted out!

And talking about equality and stuff - Jared Leto is returning back to film! Acording to THR, he'll play a "flamboyant cross-dresser" in the upcoming film Dallas Buyer’s Club: link.

Inspired by real events, the story centers on Ron Woodroof (Matthew McConaughey), a Texas electrician diagnosed with AIDS and given six months to live, who began smuggling alternative drugs into the U.S. to help himself and other AIDS patients. He added years to his life but rushed headfirst into a collision course with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, which was bent on keeping the drugs out of the country.

In a potentially standout role, Leto would play a flamboyant cross-dresser with HIV who helps Woodroof.

The subject might not be my cuppa but I bet he'll be great. I loved him, LOVED HIM as Hephaistion in Alexander, he and his relationship with Alexander were the best parts of the movie. Leto's chemistry with Colin Farrell was simply stunning. Their scenes together are the only thing I watch whenever I put this movie on, everything else I skip.

Premium Rush on DVD!

Premium Rush will be out on DVD on Dec. 21! The Dark Knight Rises on Dec. 4! Definitely buying both, need to satisfy my JGL obsession :P

And talking about JGL, Looper has made $126 mil. worldwide so far! With a $30 mil. budget, that's all kinds of awesome! Congrats :)

Hansel & Gretel, can't wait!

A new LQ Hansel & Gretel poster!

The poster and this...

Found on Tumblr!

... So HOT! I mean, seriously. Just a few more months to go, Jan. 25th is the premiere, IIRC. I think it's given it will flop in the cinemas, it's too quirky for the general public, R-rated and it'll air outside the "blockbuster season", but I don't care. I just need to see it - I hope our cinemas will actually show it, not like Dredd and Premium Rush *grumbles* Who would've thought that I would one day consider Hansel and Gretel smoking hot?

Also, I need The Bourne Legacy out on DVD ASAP. Hopefully, it'll come out before Xmas!

Looper

Finally saw Looper in the cinema. And I liked it a lot, JGL's prosthetics included (never had a problem with them, but some people moaned about them like little kids :-/). And I found it quite easy to follow, no inexplicable twists. A pretty straightforward movie - or as straightforward as time travel can be.

Spoilers! )

To sum it up: JGL! JGL! JGL! *giddy*

I would rate the movie 8/10 because although I found the ending fitting, there was no surprising twist. As I said, a quite straightforward tale.

AfterElton's "pairing of the week": Arthur&Eames

AfterElton.com and their slash column made Inception's Arthur&Eames the pairing of the week: link. I loved what they wrote about it:

Inception fandom exemplifies what makes fandom unique. Here Christopher Nolan thinks he made this epic portrait of an alpha-male dealing with emo man-pain from the death of his wife, and then Inception fandom comes along and decides that, no thanks, that guy's kind of a major douchebag and we'd rather focus on the two hot dudes flirting in the background.

Inception fandom illustrates that how fans interpret content is never fully in the creator's control. And Arthur/Eames illustrates that you don't need more than 3 minutes of actual interaction in order to generate two years' worth of fantastic fanon. All you need are two incredibly attractive men playing suave, debonair criminals with a shared history... and a few brief moments of hardcore flirting.

Eames, who clearly enjoys becoming a woman and flirting with other men, is partially inspired by queer vintage heartthrob Farley Granger. Arthur, who may know Eames from their shared military background, is apparently inspired by GQ.

Normally a stand-alone film like Inception would never have a large fandom, but Inception fandom has thrived for two years, mainly because of the onscreen chemistry of Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Tom Hardy.

Exactly why I love this pairing. At first, I didn't see it. It took me 2 whole years to fall for them but when I finally did, I fell hard. I wonder if Chris Nolan's aware of how popular these two are. I bet that, if he does know, he pretty much went "O.o;; That's kinda, sorta not what I was aiming for?" when he learned about it. LOL! In any case, I need to thank Mr. Nolan for introducing me to JGL and Tom Hardy and their absolute awesomeness!

Premium Rush

I don't usually do it, I don't usually download cam rips of movies currently running in the cinema because I believe in supporting stuff you like. But since Sony and Falcon dropped the movie from the Czech cinemas a week before its premiere, I did download it as a bick FUCK YOU to all the distributors. If you think that this is a way to fight net piracy, by not showing a movie AT ALL, then fuck you and the horse you rode in on!

I loved the movie! Loved it! And I was on the edge of my seat most of the time. Spoilers! )

I'm now even more pissed at Sony and Falcon for not bringing it to our cinemas. It would've been awesome to see the bike chases on the big screen. Damn it! *grumbles* I'll be definitely getting it on DVD as soon as it's out!

Rian Johnson's next thing

A comment exchange with [livejournal.com profile] sharona1x2 reminded me of this wonderful interview with Rian Johnson where he talks about his next project, in very vague terms:

The stuff I'm chewing on right now for my next thing - the couple things I'm juggling, they both have scifi hooks to them. I think it's something I might stick around in for awhile.

Source

Vague, but so exciting! I hope he casts Joe in it again - well, Joe has been in all Rian's movies so far, so that fact would support it, having the main part in Brick and Looper and a cameo in The Brothers Bloom. So, I really hope we get to see Joe in a sci-fi directed by Rian again and soon!

Of merits

As you probably noticed, I've been more into movies than TV shows lately. I just can't find any enthusiasm for TV in me these days, I don't know why. But it has its merits, too. What? Since I started watching more movies, I stopped worrying about TV ratings.

You see, I used to watch TV shows with one eye aimed at their ratings, always worrying about how they were doing, what their chances for renewal were... It was always in the back of my mind. Yeah, I'm a worrier, sue me. But now? It doesn't really affect me, not in any deeper than a "huh, interesting" way. Take The Mentalist and Castle, for example - both hit series low with their latest episodes (in both cases it was lead-in related). But instead of being all anxious about it, I mostly feel... I mean, if it's their last season, I wouldn't mind. The same goes for other shows that hit their rock bottoms lately, like Haven or Warehouse 13. It happens.

It's a really interesting state of mind for me. I've never been particularly zen about stuff like that. And now I am. Strange.

Talk about ratings. Looper topped the theater charts in both UK (Ł2.4 mil.) and Australia ($2.9 mil.). Interesting. Still waiting for that record breaking Chinese box office number. I'm now really curious :P

Well f***!

So, not only won't they air Dredd here in the cinemas, they now dropped Premium Rush too, even though they aired trailers for it and hung up posters in the cinema. Well that's just great. That's the perfect way how to battle internet piracy - not show the movie at all and fuck the viewers. I'm so angry right now.

Looper at the box office

Looper did better than expected at the box office this weekend. No final numbers yet but critics predicted high teens while in reality, it made approximately $21 mil. With a $30 mil. budget and rated R, not bad at all! The interesting thing though? China's box office numbers:

The biggest surprise is in China, where the Rian Johnson helmed time travel adventure has taken the top spot with an estimated $24 million (...) and it looks set to become the first opening of there which actually outgrosses that of North America. Endgame's James Stern tells Deadline, "While we don’t have the final box office tally’s because of the Chinese National Holiday, it looks as if we are #1 in that market and at least on par if not exceeding the U.S. box office, marking the very first time in history that China would be world’s leading market for an international film."

Source

First movie in history to achieve that, huh? It just proves that the foreign BO is where the big bucks can be found these days, not in the US anymore. I think that studios and critics will soon have to redefine their strategy of labeling "flops". The US BO is stumbling more and more while foreign countries are becoming a much stronger purchasing power in that department.

Good for Looper. Even with just this weekend's BO numbers in the US and China, investors already got their money back.

3x Jack Hunter: Jack Hunter and the Quest for Akhenaten's Tomb

This time around, Jack's even busier than usual, having not just one or two bad guys after him but two bad guys and half the military! Once more, the story is way over the top - but the ending draws you back in again, it's crazy!

As characters go, Jack is really sweet but I don't like Nadia, all she can do is complain and yell at Jack. There were scenes where I simply wanted to shake her and tell her to stop being such a dumb-ass. Though Littmann is still kicking ass. Yeah, yeah, he's the bad guy but come on! And the slash is strong between Littmann and Jack! I mean, when Lena kissed him, Littmann looked directly at Jack, smirked and told him, "There are still people who find me appealing." LOL! That was awesome. So, yeah, I know that I'm basically told to ship Jack and Nadia by the writers but I find Jack and Littmann so much more appealing. And SIZZLING HOT!

Next? Jack Hunter and the Star of Heaven!

Looper's in the cinema today!

Go and see it, peeps! RT has it at 92% with 119 positive and only 10 negative reviews and the consensus is "As thought-provoking as it is thrilling, Looper delivers an uncommonly smart, bravely original blend of futuristic sci-fi and good old-fashioned action." Source.

Some BTS pics with nice comments from the director himself, Rian Johnson: link.

And a really great interview with Rian Johnson, JGL and Noah Segan (another actor who was in Brick): link.

JGL on Rian Johnson:

"We've watched countless movies together, we've spent endless hours talking about movies. He's one of my best friends in the world. That absolutely helps when you're on set, to understand how he thinks. That's, I think, my job as an actor: to understand what the filmmaker has in mind, and deliver the ingredients that he or she needs to cut the movie together. Rian is able to very definitely communicate to me what he wants."

Rian Johnson on the actors playing the same character:

"It was really Joe wrapping himself around Bruce. That was a decision we made early on and it made a lot of sense to me, because we all know what Bruce Willis looks like. In the way that you know what your mom looks like, you know what Bruce Willis looks like. I figured instead of fighting that, let's use that. Let's give that to Joe, and give that to our makeup artist as handholds to grab onto to fill that recognition."

I can't wait to see the film. I hope it doesn't flop at the box office, that would hurt my soul :(

Pros & Cons

Pros:

* An animated trailer for Looper! Awesome!

* An interview with Rian Johnson, the director of Looper: link. My favorite part?

What does it feel like to hug JGL?

Johnson: It’s like hugging a rainbow made out of sincere kittens.

LOL!

* James McAvoy's Welcome to the Punch finally got a release date, March 2013: link. I don't even hope to see it in the cinema here, I mean, as if, but I want to at least get my hands on the DVD!

Cons:

* The reboot/remake of The Mummy? Will be "darker and scarier" and directed by Len Wiseman: link. Len Wiseman, you know, the guy who directed the Total Recall movie, which was good but could've been so much better with, you know, a BETTER DIRECTOR? And darker and scarier? The Mummy worked because it was cheesy and campy and so much fun! *sigh*

* It looks like Tom Hardy will play the main character in Everest: link. Shucks. Another movie where his character bites it. I mean, I get that it's a great acting challenge and more power to him but... Yet another movie of his that won't be for me *sigh*

3x with JGL: Inception

How could I do this "3x with JGL" thing and not watch Inception? I think that Inception and not the Batman trilogy is Chris Nolan's real masterpiece. Why? Because it's a) original and b) an ensemble film. A real ensemble movie where everybody has stuff to do that's important for the success of the mission, nobody's just standing around looking pretty.

Much has been said about the movie, so I'll just mention a few things that I've noticed this time around...

Arthur is really pretty and so incredibly young. JGL looked like the youngest member of the cast. Arthur's dream level was my favorite. The rolling corridor, the kick in the elevator, the zero gravity, tying them all together and dragging them down the corridor... SWEET! Also, when he fought the security guys in the corridor, he looked like a giant spider, running up and down the walls, clinging to them!

Eames is really pretty too. Sorry about the quality of the second pic but the focus was never on him in the scene, the camera followed Cobb around, but I needed to post this because he looked so incredibly sexy in his dark purple shirt and black suit, slouched in such a sexy way. Yeah, Eames usually dresses horribly but in that scene? Mwah! \o/ Also, his level was my second favorite, the way he dealt with the security, how he fought them in the snow!

So, the first level was Yusuf's, the second was Arthur's, the third was Eames' and Limbo was Dom's right? That's why the deepest level didn't collapse when Ariadne left. Also, I think the whole thing might have been a dream after all, starting with Yusuf's den in Mombasa. Did you notice that Dom didn't manage to check his totem back then? That he dropped it when Saito called out to him? Or Cobb might have stayed in Limbo together with Saito. Or maybe they did wake up? Food for thought...

I'm now seeing the Arthur/Eames vibes much clearer. Sure, they only had a few lines together, but... Arthur knew that Eames was in Mombasa - yet he didn't know about Yusuf's den. In the taxi, after the shoot-out, he checked with Eames first. When Arthur was playing Yusuf's guinea pig, with Yusuf trying out the kicks on him, Eames was always there, giggling. The "darling" bit. The "Go to sleep, Mr. Eames" bit. The "stick in the mud" bit... Yup, I see it!

Now I would really want to read a fic or two about Arthur dealing with his failure to discover the militarization of Fischer's mind. Or a fic with Arthur and Eames training together in RL, sparring or something. Hm...

Oh, the actor who played Nash? Lucas Haas? He was in Brick with JGL together, playing The Pin.

3x with JGL: 50-50

This movie feels very personal to me. 11 years ago, my father died of cancer and looking back now, I would have done so many things differently. Back then, I was 22 and finishing my BA when he died. My mom just lost her job and she was taking care of my father at home, almost till his last day. And it was killing her, both physically and emotionally. He was very demanding and... well, there were other issues besides his sickness, stuff that had been brewing for years. And because she was taking care of him, I was trying to take care of her, to help her and support her emotionally. But I was spending so much time at school and studying... And because of that, I was terser with my father than I should've been. Hindsight is always 20-20.

But back to the movie. It's wonderful, based on a real story of the writer who is also one of the closest friends of Seth Rogen who plays JGL's Adam's best friend in this movie. So, the writer and Seth Rogen - who also produced this film - and the other exec who went through this ordeal together based the story on their own experiences, on how they had felt and reacted, and because of that, the movie feels real.

JGL was simply amazing. Funny and sweet and beautiful and you wanted to hug him and tell him everything would be okay.

A fantastic performance. Though I'm a bit torn. You see, James McAvoy - my other favorite actor! - was set to play this part first, they even went through the whole pre-production with him but then he had to drop out because of a family emergency. The execs offered the part to JGL and he said yes - on Saturday and on Monday they started filming! So yeah, I love JGL in this but James McAvoy would've been so perfect in it too! It breaks my heart :((

And I really liked Seth Rogen in this movie...

Yeah, Kyle was a bit of an oaf but he was also determined to see his friend through this, to help him. He and Adam had known each other since high school and the depth of their friendship was undeniable. He was a bit insensitive from time to time that's why one of my favorite scenes was when Adam found the self-help book for family and friends of cancer patients in Kyle's flat and realized that despite all his goofiness, Kyle was really worried about him and that he had read the book in secret so that he could help Adam better. That was fantastic.

And then there was romance and Rachel and Katherine - Anna Kendrick was amazing as the wet behind the ears therapist, simply lovely! - but I especially loved Anjelica Huston as Adam's mother.

The scene before Adam's surgery - see above - and the one after the whole thing, when he was high on morphine and called her "Mommy!" was sweet. Though the former made me tear up, it was so sad.

To sum it up, it's a wonderful, funny movie about a serious topic that's mostly about how two best friends handle a sickness that threatens the life of one of them. Excellent.

Other known actors? Matt Frewer as the cancer patient Mitch.

3x with JGL: (500) Days of Summer

I watched this movie knowing the tagline was "This is not a love story. This is a story about love." And also knowing what JGL had said about his character, Tom (he really loves to play Toms, doesn't he?):

"[Tom] develops a mildly delusional obsession over a girl onto whom he projects all these fantasies," Gordon-Levitt explained. "He thinks she’ll give his life meaning because he doesn’t care about much else going on in his life. A lot of boys and girls think their lives will have meaning if they find a partner who wants nothing else in life but them. That’s not healthy. That’s falling in love with the idea of a person, not the actual person.

"A part of the movie that’s less talked about is that once Zooey’s character dumps the guy, he builds himself up without the crutch of a fantasy relationship, and he meets a new girl."

Source

I have to agree with him. Summer is very clear about not wanting a boyfriend but Tom falls for her hard anyway. That's pretty much the beginning of the film. The rest is him waking up to the reality. And it's a hit after hit after hit and you can't help but ache for him - but, as JGL said, it's a false happiness because she lets him forget how empty his life otherwise is.

JGL looked so incredibly good in this movie...

... and I loved the dancing and singing number in the park, one of the best scenes. This guy has MOVES! I also understand why so many people think he's head over heels for Zooey Deschanel even though they both insist on being just best friend. I mean, when he looks at her in this movie, it's like his heart is in his eyes...

... so yeah, I think I get why people might forget it's "just" acting, that it's not real.

My favorite part of the movie, though? Tom's relationship with his little sister Rachel, played by Chloë Moretz...

The way she's always there for him with an advice, the way she's so worried about him - up to the point of riding her bike across the city in the middle of the night when Tom's friends call her because he's depressed. It's beautiful and the best thing in the whole movie!

Other known actors in this movie? Matthew Gray Gubler, Clark Gregg, Minka Kelly.

New Looper trailer!

You know, the more trailers and featurettes I see, the more I feel like I know absolutely nothing about the movie, LOL! The plot sounds so simple, you get to kill your future self, but then they add a hint here, a small comment there... And suddenly, it's like you got it totally wrong and the movie is about something else entirely. I LOVE IT!
