LESBIAN, GAY, BISEXUAL, AND TRANSGENDER PRIDE MONTH, 2009:
"My Administration has partnered with the LGBT community to advance a wide range of initiatives. At the international level, I have joined efforts at the United Nations to decriminalize homosexuality around the world. Here at home, I continue to support measures to bring the full spectrum of equal rights to LGBT Americans. These measures include enhancing hate crimes laws, supporting civil unions and Federal rights for LGBT couples, outlawing discrimination in the workplace, ensuring adoption rights, and ending the existing "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" policy in a way that strengthens our Armed Forces and our national security. We must also commit ourselves to fighting the HIV/AIDS epidemic by both reducing the number of HIV infections and providing care and support services to people living with HIV/AIDS across the United States."

Mr Barrack Obama, I bow to you.

Don't we *finally* have just the most incredible president? It's been a long time since I was able to have any pride in the leadership of my country.

I just hope that he can keep it up. Especially about the DADT policy - that one is so stupid that I have no words for it!

I'm very disappointed. He doesn't mention same sex marriage. A civil union is not equal to marriage. It doesn't contain the same rights as marriage. For example, a civil union does not grant the bearers the ability to file federal taxes jointly and obtain all the benefits of that. Also, they can't bring a foreign partner to this country to live, like straights can. Until same sex marriage is allowed, same sex couples will still be second class citizens.

I support gay marriage and I would be overjoyed if same sex marriage became legal - but I have to say that other gay-related issues have to take the front seat. How can he push for same sex marriage when in the armed forces, homosexuality is basically still criminalized? I think that DADT is making homosexuals second class citizens in a much worse way. To pass a law about same sex marriages, a foundation must be build that would make it harder for the next narrow-minded politician to come and overthrow it again. He's a politican so he knows that to change the conviction of masses, you have to take seemingly non-threatening baby steps, not a sledge hammer. With the recall of DADT, most higher-ups in the military already agree. With same sex marriages, a majority of Americans doesn't agree, a small majority but a majority nevertheless.

I don't agree. Several states now have same sex marriage and that was obtained via the sledge hammer. Heck, it even took the U.S. Supreme Court to end racial discimination. If it was left up to the voters, we probably still wouldn't even have that. Ultimately, I see this issue ending in the U.S. Supreme Court. I hope Obama chooses wisely when he seats the next justice.

I also forgot to mention that Obama, during the debates on national TV last year, said he does not support same sex marriage. That sound bite was used by the Yes on Prop. 8 campaign. They used computers to call Californians before the election and play that sound bite.

Yes. The DADT thing is what bothers me the most, to be honest.
