"Why do you want his soul so much?" Sam rasped, straining against the invisible bonds that kept him pinned to the wall. His heart ached at the sight of his brother kneeling by her feet where she sat on a throne of white-washed bones.
"It's quite simple," Lilith answered, her child’s hand carding through Dean's hair as if she was petting a dog. "His soul belonged to my son."
Sam raised his eyes to look at her, shocked.
"After I left Eden and went to Hell, I gave birth to many monsters," she continued, voice soft with memories. "But among all the ugliness, an angel was born. His wings were bright like fresh fallen snow and his soul outshone the sun. He longed for the light and he longed for his family. He couldn't have the one without abandoning the other. And it killed him. He died of a broken heart." She cupped Dean's chin and raised it, looking into his clouded, unfocused eyes. Lilith caressed Dean's face gently and he leaned into her small hand unconsciously. "But now I have found him again."
Sam swallowed, his heart racing with fear. But not for himself. "And what will you do with him?"
"He couldn't live in the darkness of Hell…" Lilith whispered then looked up, her eyes shining white. "So I will give him the light."
