Folks, I need your help... My Amazon wish list is full of great, amazing yaoi manga but now I'm looking for something different. So...

Is there someone on my flist who reads shoujo or non-yaoish manga? See, I would like to buy some but I have no idea what's good. I do buy "Fruits Basket", "Ouran High School Host Club" and "Bleach" but I would be interested in other manga that have very strong female characters. So no fainting heroine that need rescuing volume after volume, but girls that kick butt!

I would love to find a manga that would be the paper equivalent of the anime The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya. Haruhi was weird, she was a nutjob but this anime had something that caught me the first time I watched it and it still didn't let go. Yes, there was romance between Haruhi and Kyon but it was tiny bits, the rest was all about Haruhi's crazy ideas. When she set her mind on something, she got it even if she had to use sexual harassment and blackmailing to get it. And only Kyon was able to contain some of her craziness. That was one amazing love story without it being a love story at all.

Can someone rec me something like that?

One of my favorite shojo manga titles at the moment is Hana-Kimi. The main character is a girl who dresses as a boy to attend an all-boys high school. It's quite cute and Mizuki isn't a simpering damsel. :)

Hmm, I second the recommendation of Hana Kimi. Although I don't think that Mizuki has that much kick butt potential. She's not the girl that needs constant saving but without some help (mainly from her idol Sano and the school's doctor Umeda) she can't keep up pretending to be a boy. Hana Kimi is also different from Ouran Host Club concerning the comedy aspects, I don't think it's as hilarious as Ouran can be. But it has lovable characters (especially Ume-chan). Here's a link to a download page that hosts all volumes of Hana Kimi (maybe you want to check out a volume or two before actually buying the manga): http://www.aicoalition.com/manga_hanakimi.php

By the way, if you like Suzumiya Haruhi, have you read the novels yet? Here's a link to all fan translated volumes (I haven't read them yet but I heard they're really worth reading): over here (http://www.baka-tsuki.net/project/index.php?title=Suzumiya_Haruhi#The_Suzumiya_Haruhi_series.2C_by_Tanigawa_Nagaru)

And for a more butt-kicking heroine you might want to try Yamato Nadeshiko Shichi Henge (Perfect Girl Evolution). Sunako is the kind of wacky character that can compare to Suzumiya Haruhi (with a good dash of goth mixed in). Although the story idea is pretty simple, the overall weirdness of Sunako keeps me hooked especially when she is out to save to save the boys again. Wow, thank you so much. I don't mind that Hana Kimi is not as hilarious as Ouran because the comedy aspect in Ouran can be too much sometimes. I will definitely check it out!

I remember watching Yamato Nadeshiko the anime because there was the seiyuu who voiced Kyon in Haruhi Suzumiya :)
