"Ghost" by skull_bearer | Charles/Erik | Erik was right after all. The government begins openly persecuting and exterminating mutants. Charles loses everything he has ever loved - and then he loses his mind. | Parts: 1, 2, 3 | Status: completed

And then it stops. And maybe screams are what the world is made of because there isn't anything after that. Everything just goes white and warm and safe for the first time since he turned away from Charles on that beach, and when Erik wakes up, the world is grey with smoke and dawn light, and his lips are damp and sting. Everyone is lying where they fell, but only the mutants are getting up. Erik stands, and every breath is sharp, knives in his chest.

The buildings are the same ruins they were becoming last night. The tanks are the same twisted mass of metal and bodies they had been. But the soldiers are lying eyes open blind on the tarmac, unharmed and untouched and none breathing.

Erik touches his lips again, he can almost feel the kiss that never happened. "Charles?"

Wow. Seriously. Wow. This is so, so creepy. I mean, can you imagine what would happen if a telepath as powerful as Charles went darkside? Who could stop him?

I really liked this IGN interview with James McAvoy, it's obvious that he has thought a lot about where Charles is coming from, what motivates and who he is. My favorite parts were:

For me, Charles Xavier is a monk. He's like a selfless, egoless almost sexless force for the betterment of humanity and mortality. And getting to kind of go, 'Alright, well he's got to be different from that.' It's quite fun because the complete opposite of that is an ego-fuelled, sexed up self-serving dude. And not going too far with it, but he's definitely got an ego and he's definitely got a sex drive as well.

One of the things we wanted to get in the relationship between Erik and Charles that isn't necessarily touched on -- I don't know about all the other stuff -- but Charles has this empathy for everybody; he has this connection to everybody because he can feel their experiences and see their experiences. Their memories are his memories. But, he wasn't looking for Erik; he didn't know Erik was there and he suddenly felt Erik and perhaps he has never connected to anybody quite the same way that he connected to Erik. Maybe because of the nature of the horrible things that happened to him and the level of anger that he carries. And that makes a big impression on him, not just because he feels empathy for him but also because it's a big challenge to fix someone and try to help someone like that.

I especially loved the last part, about Charles connecting with Erik in a completely different, maybe even deeper way than with anybody else. I mean, it's pretty obvious in the movie that spoilers ) - man, that needs to be fic'd. right. now!

Also, I'm glad that both James McAvoy and Michael Fassbender are contracted for two more movies - unfortunately, the movie isn't doing all that well in the theaters. In more than a week, it earned "only" 98 mil. USD in the US and 123 mil. USD in foreign countries. The movie cost 160 mil. to make and it looks like it won't even reach that number in the US. Sure, it won't end in red numbers - it's already at 221 mil. worldwide - but will it be enough for a sequel? *bites fingernails*
