What he ensures is that when one of Moira's bullets takes a truly wild ricochet, Charles cannot get out of the way. It's Erik who finds his body, and in the moment just before he startles awake, he finds he cannot breathe.

“Concentrate,” warned Erik, speaking against his neck, lips and teeth catching against his skin, hot breath sending shivers and goosebumps across him. Charles closed his eyes briefly, trying to focus his energies on the people around him. It was harder when they were walking around or when they were just coming into the range of sight. Every extra person was an extra mind he had to connect to, and Erik was kissing him now. Charles could only kiss slowly back, unable to battle back against the aggressive, needy attack of the other man.

Man, that's really... hot! O.o Like whoa. And the thing is, I can actually imagine it. I mean, after Erik called Charles an "adorable lab rat" in the movie, anything's possible, I guess ;)
