Dean/Castiel?
Apr. 29th, 2011 01:10 pmSo, SpoilerTV is holding a competition: Favorite TV Romantic Couple Competition. They didn't specify if canon only or not before letting people run with it. And, of course, the unexpected happened.
Fans have spoken and voted for Dean/Castiel to be included in the poll for the last 5 places in the competition. They were the only gay couple in a sea of het. And, of course, they won the poll. By a landslide! With 43% they took the first place, the 2nd pairing got only 11%!
And you can guess what followed - a hate tsunami of epic proportion: it's so GAY; they will never become a couple; their fans are delusional and should just shut up and go away etc. and so on. I was... shocked.
And I was even more shocked by the admin's response - he threatened to not just ban the haters but ELIMINATE the pairing if it didn't stop. WTF?! No, seriously, WTF! Instead of standing behind the voters and protecting their right to vote for whatever they choose, the admin actually threatened to take down the pairing that was rightly included and rightly won. Wow.
It made me... sad, depressed even. How can people who should be able to just have fun together hate on others so much? The Dean/Castiel fans followed the rules to the dot, they voted and they squeed and - for once - SPN fans weren't actually insulting anybody. And then they were told off by resentful fans of other shows because Dean and Castiel aren't an official couple - despite the fact that, for example, Patrick Jane and Teresa Lisbon were listed as a couple even though both the writers and the actors said repeatedly that they weren't and aren't going to become one any time soon if ever.
Wow. I just... wow. My response was: "Why do some people dislike the Cas/Dean pairing so much? If Castiel were a woman, everybody would coo over what a great couple they would make. What's so different just because he's a guy? The small-mindedness of some people is staggering, seriously." Because, really, if Cas were a woman, the shippers would be all over their case and all the things said on the show - "the angel who's in love with you?" etc. - would be a proof of their epic love.
But there is a different set of rules for gay pairings, I guess. And it makes me very sad...
