The Trial: Carl Lumbly! I thought he was the perfect choice for Nathan's father. And I was glad that Nathan got a backstory too. I felt so sorry for both him and his father - on the other hand, I understood the judge's arguments too. What Obediah did was a murderer, no matter his reasons. But how else could he have punished the man who had done something so awful to his family? Even if he went to court with it, it would've been the word of a former slave against the word of a former overseer...

And Ezra and his mother as a comic relief again :P

Chinatown: I was surprised by the way Ezra treated the girl he had bought. But I realized he was right, when he explained his reasons to her - sure, he was a conman, but he had never and would never abuse a woman. He was a greedy jerk but he had some boundaries, some lines he would never cross. I guess that's why he fits with the other six so well.

I loved the way JD and Inez played Buck. Buck wanted to make Inez fall for him with a love potion and she and JD simply turned the tables back on him. But I think that even if the potion had worked and Inez fell in love, Buck wouldn't have done anything. He would've been excited at first but I think he would've quickly realized that what he did was wrong. After all, his mama taught him to respect women.

You know, I'm glad that this show touches upon terrible subjects like slavery, "justifiable" homicide or racism without getting preachy. The writers were, IMHO, able to point out just how wrong these injustices were without taking them out of their period content. They made the characters feel the wrongness without giving them a too modern attitude.
