-- Today, I found You Higuri's "Taisho Era Chronicles" in my mail box. This is huge! You would have to understand just how much I love You Higuri's manga to get my reaction. She's a goddess among mangakas for me!

-- Still translating Tom Lloyd's "The Ragged Man", 4th in the "Twilight Reign" series - seriously, the book has 610 pages! - and as much as I love the characters, I sometimes feel like the author automatically expects his readers to know what's going on. It's like, he knows it and doesn't get that he has to, you know, WRITE IT DOWN, it's not enough that he as the author is privy to what's going on. Sheesh!

-- They plan a remake of Point Break? Why exactly? The movie was mediocre, only the presence of Keanu Reeves and Patrick Swayze made it good. Why remake it?! *head/desk*

-- NCIS & NCIS:LA season premiere promo: link. Pretty spoilery, if you ask me. But AWESOME! Tony!!!

-- "Producer Lauren Shuler Donner — the authority on the past, present and future of Fox's X-Men franchise as the producer of every one of the movies going back to X-Men in 2000 — has divulged to HitFix that things are looking "hopeful" for a First Class sequel, and that she wants Matthew Vaughn to return as director." Link. So, fingers and toes crossed, XMFC? Please? With a cherry on top?

-- I seriously adore Rob Dougan's song Clubbed to Death. It needed to be said.

"Tsubasa Chronicle Vol. 28" by Clamp

4 stars out of 5

The last part of the series. It was pretty good and there were so many things explained, no wonder this volume was much longer than the previous ones. We found out who Shaolan and Sakura and Shaolan 2.0 and Sakura 2.0 and Watanuki actually were and what happened to them. The ending was slightly open-ended; the main story found its end but it wasn't entirely happy and it opened so many new possibilities. Though I was a bit disappointed that we didn't get to see some of the characters they had met on their way again and whose story thus remained unfinished, like the vampire twins.

"Tsubasa Chronicle Vol. 25" by Clamp

3 stars out of 5

Eh, I didn't feel this volume. It told us how Shaolan and Sakura met. But it felt too long, too dragged out, too... wordy. But it was nice to see Toya and Yukito and Sakura's parents again, that's true.

"Tsubasa Chronicle Vol. 26" by Clamp

4 stars out of 5

Finally some answers! I was mostly curious about Shaolan's connection to Watanuki and it was finally, finally explained. Hurray. The ending was really sad though.

"Tsubasa Chronicle Vol. 27" by Clamp

3 stars out of 5

Way, way too convoluted. I have to wonder if the creators know what they are doing. Twist upon twist upon twist and it stopped making sense two or three volumes ago. Original characters and copies and copies of their copies and... So far, the only thing I know for sure is that the whole mess was caused by Feywan who wanted to raise someone from their grave. But who or why or how?

Vol. 23: I have no idea what's happening anymore. There's a twist after a twist after a twist and I'm starting to lose my way in them. So, there are two Shaolans and two Sakuras? But I still don't get how Shaolan and Watanuki are related. They're brothers? It's really intriguing but, uh, I need a map. Or maybe a character chart! And what's with Fuuma and the Twins?

Vol. 24: I would love to read more about boy!Toya and boy!Yukito. They were so cute. But now I don't get who Shaolan and Sakura are. Are they actually their own parents? As in time travel? Hm... But man, all those people melting away, that was scary!

I know that this series is mostly about Syaoran (Shaolan) and Sakura, but my favorite part is the storyline of Fai (Fye) and Kurogane. Their relationship can be viewed as a very, VERY close friendship or something more which is perfect. I'm fascinated by all the changes that the characters went through, especially Fai - who's now a full-fledged vampire with no magic - and Kurogane - who now has a mechanical arm. Also, I love the guest appearances of many Clamp characters like Seishiro or Fuma. I'm still slightly confused though, despite reading both xxxHolic and Tsubasa: Who IS Watanuki?
katikat: (Default)
Oh my God! Did Kurogane really do what I think he did to save Fai? Man, how many body parts can a group of four - okay, with Mokona it's five - afford to lose? But I loved that even after Fai's past was revealed, Kurogane still didn't care. He cared about the present and about their future, not about the past, things nobody could change. Fai's shocked look! Loved that Kurogane refused to let Fai go.

Vol. 4: Better than vol. 3. We see at least some development though even after 4 volumes, their relationship remains basically the same. I mean, after everything that they went through, you would expect that they would either break up for real or get at least somehow together - I'm not saying that they should abandon their issues but come on, it's the "same old, same old" thing all over again: Morinaga is horny and tries to drag Soichi into bed against his will, Soichi smacks him bloody and yells at him and they go back to status quo. It's starting to get really boring.

Vol. 5: I think that's it for me with this volume. I'm dropping the series. Vol. 4 was a big step forward but vol. 5 meant a return to the status quo again, all the progress in the previous volume was basically forgotten. I'm getting tired of their shenanigans, of the dub-con and the violence. And even though the story of Junya and Kunihiro seemed interesting at first, it turned out to be yet another non-con story... I'm disappointed.

This manga pushes the boundaries of dubious consent. Souichi always protests - and very loudly, too - whenever Morinaga tries to get him in bed. On the other hand, whenever Morinaga stops trying to get him in bed, Souichi becomes angry! Souichi reacts very violently to everything Morinaga does, but God forbid someone tries to hurt Morinaga - punches fly! So yeah, the relationship between the characters is more than confusing. And especially this volume was rather silly with the "karaoke blackmail" thing...

Vol.1: Even knowing how this manga series ends - I mean, this is one of the most famous stories in the history of manga, after all - it's strangely alluring. Subaru Sumeragi and Seishiro Sakurazuka, the healer and the killer... Hokuto, Subaru's twin, kinda gets on my nerves though. But the juxtaposition of Seishiro - the good-hearted vet vs. the cold-blooded Sakurazukamori... Wow. Clamp really knows how to push boundaries.

My favorite drawing? Seishiro standing by the window with the shikigami, the shadow bird, sitting on his outstretched arm.

Vol.2: It's really creepy, the way Seishiro can be so kind and caring, then as if a switch was flipped, he's suddenly heartless, cruel, even devious. I wonder if he really doesn't feel anything for Subaru, nothing at all...

I'm also happy that it's a series that the mangaka actually finished!

This volume was rather confusing and I don't know if it was the author's or the translator's fault. Also, a lot of place was devoted to Raikou-sama and his goons. I would prefer to learn more about Kantarou and Haruka. So, to sum it up, it was good but nothing all that special.
katikat: (Default)
I'm still a little stunned. I mean, I expected there to be something bad in Fye's past but something this bad? I wonder how he can even function. And I wonder if he remembered the second curse. I mean, Feiwan told him that he didn't need to remember it, so... And it's pretty funny - at the beginning, Kurogane couldn't get away from them fast enough, now he's the one holding the group together. Also, they keep sacrificing pieces of themselves to have their wishes fulfilled, I wonder where that will end...
katikat: (Default)
Wow, we really did leave the fluff behind. That was creepy and cruel and dark and I'm still stunned. Clamp really knows how to shock. I mean, I hoped that this volume would delve into Fye's past but I didn't expect ~that~! Now I'm curious how the others will react to what Fye did. And how will Fye react. I'm so glad that I bought the next volume already!

Oh, and I feel the insane need to slash Geo and Eagle. I don't even know from which Clamp manga they are but they were so immensely slashable in this book! Maybe I'll look them up and buy their "original" manga if they are as slashable there as they were in here.

I decided to stick with the German version of their names, it's easier that way for me. So, vol. 18. Am is it just me or was Yuko's explanation of the whole mess Feywan had created rather confusing? On the other hand, this volume has got to have the most gorgeous picture of Fye - the one where he's all vamp-y and slit-eyed and he's licking Kurogane's blood off his fingers. Wow, that's beautifully drawn. And a Fye-related cliffhanger, too!
katikat: (Default)
Vol. 15: That whole world, the setting was so creepy, all apocalyptic and a bit Dune like. It made me wonder what Kamui was waiting for so patiently the whole time, the way he refused to budge away from the underground water source. And the other!Syaoran appeared again. So freakishly terrifying with his stone cold attitude.

Vol. 16: And we finally learn more about Syaoran and about what's going on. Wow, that pretty much sums up my reaction. Simply WOW! This time, creepy doesn't even begin to cover it. I was all teary eyed after what happened to Fai, his determination to die made me all sad. On the other hand we got to see just how much Kurogane cared for Fai, the way he cradled him gently and even went up against Syaoran to protect him. I was glad that I had the next book in the series at hand because the cliffhanger was heart-stopping!

Vol. 17: Ouch. Poor Fai. From now on, he and Kurogane are tied together forever. And Fai really wasn't happy about it. When he stopped calling Kurogane names and Kurogane realized it - that broke my heart. I wonder what Fai's secret is. But I was glad to see Sakura show some spunk. Looking cute is fine but it's not enough for me. Also, Kamui and Subaru vs. Fuuma and Seishiro again, huh? And still, there are the Kamui/Fuuma and Subaru/Seishiro vibes there, just like always. Clamp, please, never change!

I bought this manga in German under the title "Verliebter Tyrann". It's quite funny to watch Soichi relentlessly insist on not loving Morinaga - while being all pissy when someone just looks at him the wrong way. I loved the background story about Morinaga's first love, about the boy who tried to kill himself and about the secret that drove Morinaga away from his family. It's not just about Morinaga pining after Soichi anymore, the characters are becoming richer, more colorful.

Review: Not a bad manga - but also nothing special. Rather forgettable. The narrative seemed choppy and disjointed, some parts didn't make sense, the artwork was average. The most interesting thing was Takumi's confession to Gie, when Takumi told his boyfriend about what happened to him that made him afraid to be touched and alienated him from his parents. I was rather surprised by the revelation. Such trauma isn't exactly common in BL manga and usually, it's glossed over, it doesn't have any consequences.

Review: There were some great moments in this volume. Like when Kurogane realized that Syaoran changed into someone else. Or when Fai used tones to spin magic. Or when they discovered the ruins and the acid rain started to fall. Or when they found the slaughtered bodies. Or when the leader of the people that attacked Syaoran was revealed. Awesome!

Review: I'm so glad that this wasn't yet another filler, that we're back on track with the main story. And I actually cried when I read this volume. It started out so happy but deteriorated so fast and then it was all dark and depressing and awesome, lovable people died - yeah, Clamp knows how to do that.

Synopsis... )

Review: The first three parts were interesting and related to the overall plot - with some cute scenes between Kantarou and Haruka. The rest though felt kind of like a waste of paper, pointless filler which is too bad. Kinoshita's stories are excellent - when they focus on the overall arc. Also, the art style changed slightly in some parts, as if they had been added at some point later.

Synopsis... )

Review: Pretty good but not as good as some of the previous volumes. The Kantarou and Muu's Kyoto Diary, an AU story, took too much place, just like the advertisement for the CD-drama that we will never get anyway. But I liked the bickering between Kantarou and Hasumi. And it was nice to see Haruka concerned for Kantarou when the exorcisms tired him out.
