"Manga Love Story 1" by Katsu Aki

Surprisingly educational manga for virgins. Katsu Aki writes a story about a couple of very traditional newlyweds - they're both virgins and their marriage is arranged - and their sexapades. It has statistics (like the average length of a penis among Japanese men etc.) and schematics. It's very... ehm... interesting. Though I have to say that the overly traditional world in which those two live really doesn't sit well with me: Yura gives up her job after her wedding to take care of her husband, she basically lives to make her husband happy, he's your usual lowly office bee and if it wasn't for their occasional sex, they could be two strangers sharing a flat. It's really weird, this combination of porn and... awkward reservation.

Boring. I didn't think I would ever say that about a Clamp manga but this one was seriously boring, I didn't care for the characters at all. The only saving grace? The twist at the end, that I didn't expect. Not even the pretty drawings could save the manga this time. I mean, it's yet another variation of the same old, same old "three girls fall into an alternate universe where they receive magical powers to save a princess" theme. I won't be buying the 2nd omnibus.

The story is hilarious and engaging, the characters funny and the dialogs pitch perfect - this is Haruhi Suzumiya after all and the manga follows the anime almost to the letter.

But! Yes, the big but is the manga's style. The anime was beautifully drawn - as you can see in the mood theme that I made - while the manga is average at best. It really can't compete with the show and it's just too bad. I think I will switch over to the light novels after all.

Oh my! "The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya" vol. 1 by Nagaru Tanigawa will be published Oct. 28th in America! Haruhi Suzumiya, my most favorite anime ever, in manga form! Kyon! \o/ Haruhi! \o/ Their completely nutty, reality-destroying romance! Woot! \o/ That's so awesome!

I finished reading Wen Spencer's "Tainted Trail" and picked up the 3rd book in the Ukiah Oregon series, "Bitter Waters". Although I know that I keep repeating myself I must say that these books are so totally awesome and cool. The characters are distinct and well drawn and you can see how Ukiah is changing during the books. At the beginning of the first book, he was an innocent boy. At the beginning of the third one, he sees everything in a different light, he isn't helplessly innocent anymore. He starts to think independently, he becomes a man. Excellent.

And I checked out the [livejournal.com profile] mirageofblaze community and read the spoilers to learn how the manga ended (it has 40 vols). And let me tell you that I won't buy this manga should someone license it. Folks who know what I like and what I don't like probably know why. Never ever. I'm happy that the anime ended where it did and left me blissfully innocent of what was to come.
