"With Eyes Wide Open" by cleflink | AU | Sherlock/John | In which souls are deceptively easy to see and no one can quite figure out what the deal is with Sherlock and John. Magic realism. | ~8.000

She could see Sherlock's soul.

She felt the thrill of the chase, the slickness of wet pavement and the bite of fierce exultation, all wrapped up in an almost domestic calmness that felt like warm wool and quiet.

The contact lasted less than a second; Sherlock's eyes shuttered immediately, returning to their characteristic blankness so quickly that Molly would actually have doubted what she'd seen if it hadn't been so completely unprecedented.

Wonderful. Truly wonderful. I love magical realism and souls and characters being special and stuff like that. Lovely...

"Horse And Carriage" by flawedamythyst | John/Sherlock | Asexuality | Sherlock proposes. John thinks the whole idea is ludicrous - but he goes along with it anyway. | 52.000 words

“Sherlock,” he said, and got a mostly-asleep 'hmm?' in response. He hesitated for a moment, and then said, “I can't imagine that marrying anyone else would have been even half as good as this has been.”

This is, hands down, one of the best series in this fandom. It takes the readers through the years and shows them John and Sherlock's marriage at various points in their lives. It's like a warm, fuzzy blanket.

So, what have I been doing these last few evenings? Listening to "The Paradox Series" by wordstring again, as read by fayjay, bronwyn and revolutionaryjo! This is, hands down, one of the best Sherlock fanfic series ever written and I love to re-visit it regularly. Sherlock is utterly mad in this one, like seriously off his rocker! Yet his and John's relationship works so well, it's a thing of utter perfection. As Sherlock says in the last part, "John is like Babelfish, English to Sherlock, without ever having been programmed." Yes, it makes me very, very happy...

"Mental" Boeshane42 | John/Sherlock | AU | Sherlock Holmes is a patient in a closed psychiatric ward. John Watson is his new psychiatrist. | 18.000 words

“I've no intention of staying here beyond the one year mark,” Sherlock states offhandedly. His mouth snaps shut after he says it and he looks briefly as if he'd like to take the words back.

John looks at him, tries to capture his gaze, but Sherlock keeps his face turned sideways. “Sherlock...?” John licks his lips, tries to calm his suddenly racing heart. “Sherlock, what do you mean by that?”

“Nothing, John.” Sherlock sends him a smile that seems far from genuine. “Honestly, I don't even know what I'm saying.”

I felt so, so sorry for Sherlock in this fic. And for John too. He tried so hard to understand what was wrong with Sherlock...

"Speak Now, or Forever Hold Your Peace" by flawedamythyst | John/Sherlock, John/Mary | Unexpected revelations at a wedding. | ~4.700 words

"That said, I have just had a rather spectacular break-up with Mary, so I reckon the sane thing to do is to go home, have some tea, and not jump into anything until I've had a chance to catch my breath.”

“That seems-” started Sherlock, and was interrupted again.

“Of course, neither of us ever go for the sane thing to do,” said John. “So, actually, let's go home, have some tea, and jump straight into bed.”

Sherlock blinked. “Is the tea crucial to this plan?” he asked.

Lovely, lovely fic! And Lestrade is rocking awesome in it! Gosh, gosh! *rolls in the pretty*

"Their Whole Life Through" by eight_demands | AU | Sherlock/John, Mycroft/Lestrade | John and Sherlock meet in a different way: Sherlock's the patient every doctor hates. Then he meets John at the surgery. | ~18.000 words

John's eyes narrowed. He drained the rest of his coffee and pitched the empty cup into the bin. "You know," he said to Lestrade, "we should all have dinner sometime. You and Mycroft." He gestured to himself and Sherlock.

Sherlock looked horrified, and Lestrade was watching Sherlock. "I think that can be arranged," he said, amused.

"It certainly will not." Sherlock was practically hopping from foot to foot in impatience.

The series is unfinished but both stories are stand-alone, so it doesn't really matter. And it's such a lovely, humorous fic!

"Family Affairs" by sommerspr0ssen | Gen | When John's family is involved in a car accident, only nine-year-old John survives with bad damage to his shoulder. With no relatives left to raise him, John ends up in a children's home and quickly loses any hope that he will ever be considered for adoption. That is, until the Holmes family announces their interest in adopting a brother for their brilliant but troublesome son Sherlock. | 27.400 words

"John", Sherlock says quietly and averts his eyes, which is very unlike him. "I'm... I'm sorry about what I've said to Father. You aren't..." He stops again, pressing his hands into the sides of his legs. "You aren't dull. I... I... I like you, all right? And I'd like you to stay. With us, I mean. At home."

A warm tingle grows in John's belly, seemingly expanding, when he finally understands what Sherlock is trying to say, has tried to achieve by running away on his own. Sherlock likes him. Sherlock wants him to stay.

I think I rec'd this one already but never mind, it's a great fic worth rec'ing twice, so here you have it. I really like Mycroft in this one. And Sherlock's a brat, nothing new there ;P

"Mummy, No Thank You" by Unloyal_Olio | Sherlock/John | AU | Mummy Holmes arranges a marriage for Sherlock. Since Sherlock refuses to meet anyone properly, she must go to one of the breeding camps where older omegas are kept. She finds John Watson. Sherlock and John get along fine, but Sherlock refuses to marry and breed. Mummy decides that John should marry and breed with Mycroft if Sherlock doesn't want to. Sherlock is not happy at all. Thus, a p0rny, case-ficky, dark comedy. | ~20.000 words

They are mid-soup course when Sherlock charges into the room. His eyes are severe and wild, and he's pinching the spine of the book like it is poisoned. "You—!" He shakes his fist at John. "You!"

John rolls his eyes. "Yes, clearly this is my fault."

LOL! I also loved Mummy's quote: "Just because a woman has tits, doesn’t mean she doesn’t have balls." Ha!

"Shadows on the Wall" by AraSigyrn | John/Sherlock | John came back from Afghanistan psychic. | 18.000 words

Sherlock whisks him away and John marches the whole way back to Baker Street with his back straight and his eyes forward while Sherlock watches and taps away on his mobile. It takes hours and a piping hot curry to purge West's memories but John is able to watch Sherlock, still bundled up in his coat and scarf yell at the TV and smile when he jokes about Connie Prince. It's domestic, pedestrian and...nice. John plays around on his computer, draws the moment out as long as he can. He looks at Sherlock, at the flat and thinks I was happy here and he smiles at Sherlock before he leaves for a fictitious date with Sarah (who's safely on a date with Tim from the x-ray clinic and it would have been nice if he could have said goodbye but she's safe and that's good enough).

What an amazing fic. Reading it, you really get the feeling that John's going crazy. Fantastic!

"A City on the Head of a Pin" by mad_maudlin | Gen | John, for once, sees something Sherlock doesn't. | 5.000 words

"Thank you, Mrs. Hudson," John said. "Sherlock would thank you, but he is currently regressed to the age of sixteen."

Sherlock raised his free hand (from under his wing) to make a rude gesture, which in John's opinion only validated the point.

"Oh, don't be like that, dear," Mrs. Hudson said, admirably unfazed. She passed John a mug of soup and set Sherlock's on the coffee table before carefully arranging an afghan over him. "I'm sure something properly awful will happen any day now. Mustn't give up hope." Sherlock just made an unintelligible noise, though that was more than John had got out of him all day, and with a pat on his head Mrs. Hudson stepped over his slack wing and bustled out of the flat.

Another lovely story that could be considered "magical realism". Both John and Sherlock are awesome in this one!

"Within Your Reach (Can You See Me? Can You Hear Me?)" by numberthescars | John/Sherlock | After Sherlock's death, John starts to fade away. | 5.000 words

But no one seems to care. He walks through London like a ghost, and his only partially present body draws no stares or whispers. It's weird, he thinks, until he realizes that no one's talked to him in weeks. Actually, John's been invisible for over two months. He's just the last one to notice.

Magical realism ahoy! Love stories like that *happy sigh*

"Meet Me Inside" by wakeneve | John/Sherlock | AU | John and Sherlock meet in prison. John becomes Sherlock's prison-wife. | ~19.000 words

Something wrong...

John sagging against the wall. John wincing as he knelt. John so calm during negotiations, now nervous. John did not normally sag, wince, fret. John was still. John was calm. John stood foursquare against the world, head held high.

Conclusion: John is tired frightened (?) hurt (!)

John is hurt.

Intriguing! I loved how Mycroft played Sherlock in this fic, how he forced his hand. Ha!

"Waiting To Be Known" by soera | John/Sherlock | John Watson has been saving Sherlock's life for a very long time, even if he doesn't know it. | ~7.000 words

John finally turns to look at him. “I’ve seen people destroy themselves through addiction,” he says. “Drugs, drink. I’ve not got it in me to see one more person I love do that to themselves. Call it selfish, but I want you to live.”

“For you?” Sherlock asks softly.

“For you,” John replies. “And yeah. For me. Just for me, Sherlock, can you do that?”

Ah, lovely. So lovely. A time-travel story with a happy ending. And quite original too! Great explanation for all that happened.

"The Art of Flat-Sharing" by out_there | John/Sherlock | Everybody likes John Watson. He's down-to-earth and unassuming, and standing next to Sherlock, well... It's no wonder everyone assumes Sherlock's the horrific flatmate. | ~5.700 words

"I don't expect you to understand the appeal of long legs."

"It's an important attribute for a winning racehorse," Sherlock says, because it is.

"Yeah," John says, warm and sarcastic, "that's exactly what I meant."

LOL! This fic is just so funny! Usually, you only see how Sherlock annoys John. Here, it's the other way around. According to Sherlock, John is a terrible flatmate - he insists on cleaning! XD

"Leave the Signs and the Sirens" by out_there | John/Sherlock | After John's released and back home at Baker St, Sherlock still feels it. Down the centre of his chest there's an ache like a healing wound. A physical awareness of a body he usually ignores as much as he can. It's psychosomatic, nothing more interesting than that. (Set directly after S1, and written without knowledge of S2.) | ~25.000 words

"You're getting psychosomatic chest pains," John says with amusement. Before Sherlock can defend himself or attack in return, John adds, "And I've got a psychosomatic limp. We're a right pair."

I love the way the author describes Sherlock's PTSD in this fic. It's quite a different take on Sherlock's reaction to John getting hurt.

"The Box" by heqakheperre | Gen | The Box is not that large, really. It scares John sometimes, just how fast it is filling up. | ~2.100 words

When, if, The Box is filled, John will know that it’s pointless. The Box contains physical proof of every failure, of everything about John that is broken. Should the day come when there is no more room in The Box for the latest reminder, well, then John will know that he will never be fixed. And John refuses to be broken forever.

This is the perfect fic if you want to have a good cry. John's hopelessness, Sherlock's reaction...

"How Mycroft Stopped Worrying About Sherlock" by jupiter-ash | Gen | Mycroft has worried about Sherlock all of Sherlock’s life. This, however, is all about to change. | ~3.600 words

Yes, Doctor Watson had been deduced, accepted and then absorbed into Sherlock’s life and did not appear to be looking to leave any time soon.

This was… good.

This was also a touch disturbing.

Love this Mycroft and his endless To-Do lists :P

"There's A First Time For Everything" by Kate_Lear | John/Sherlock | A series of 'firsts' in Sherlock's life. | ~21.000 words

It isn’t until very late the following night – so late that it’s early – that he realises. They’re halfway through a Chinese meal of staggering proportions, and Sherlock is making John laugh with his predictions of the fortune cookies. When John grins at him, eyes bright and alive with mirth, he’s almost unrecognisable as the quiet, sad-faced man who limped into the lab only yesterday, and Sherlock’s stomach gives a little leap as he smiles back. It’s been so long since he was attracted to anyone that it takes him a moment to identify the feeling, but when he does he looks at John – deceptively non-threatening in his knitted jumper – and thinks Oh.

Lovely, lovely fic.

"We Go Anywhere But To The Ground" by geordielover | John/Sherlock | Post-Reichenbach, heavy angst | Every second that ticks by is a reminder of the deafening quiet Sherlock has left behind. John feels his soul slip out of his fingertips, inch by inch, with every passing day. At some point, he stops trying to hold on. | ~25.000 words

“Will I see you again?” John hears himself asking, eyes drifting shut. “When this is all over, will I—” He chokes.

“Yes,” is Sherlock’s response, quiet and reverent. “I promise you, John. You will see me again at the end of this.”

Wonderfully written! I love how John's descent into almost-madness is described, his breakdown, Sherlock's reaction... It's THE fic I wished for after seeing The Reichenbach Fall.

"Man and Beast" by jupiter_ash | John/Sherlock | AU | Sherlock is a werewolf who is captured by a facility which wants to experiment on him. When John is placed into his cage they expect Sherlock to attack him, but instead, he tries to mate with John. | 20.000 words

“See, here, have a look,” the scientist said pointing to one particular image, waving at someone to enlarge it. It was an aerial shot, looking down on the creature and on the figure it appeared to be curled around. Or more accurately on the person.

It was hard to tell, but pressed protectively but not constrictively between the wall and the creature was what looked like a man, smaller and stockier in build to the creature, fairer in hair colour but a touch darker in skin tone. He appeared to be asleep, curled up, relaxed, not at all concerned that the creature was wrapped almost possessively around him.

Sherlock is feral, Mycroft is devious and John's a BAMF. Lovely fic!
