"A Pirate's Dream (Chronicles of the Grey Lady #2)" by Jill Knowles

2 stars out of 5

Too sugary and sweet, mostly sex, very little plot. The first story in the series was better. This one felt really... convenient, what with the dreamscape where they didn't need any lube or couldn't get hurt etc. It just felt like the author took unnecessary shortcuts that made the story feel too rushed and convoluted.

Goodie!

I just realized I had almost 25GB of unsorted ebooks on my HDD! *shifty eyes* How did that happen? And then I realized that just yesterday, I got 20 ebooks for free on All Romance Ebooks' web. Yeah, that's how it happened. I'm a hoarder when it comes to books! *hangs head in shame*

You know what ebooks are really hard to find? MF that turns into MMF, you know, a het couple that takes on another man and becomes a threesome - it's always MM turning into MMF, two guys finding a poor, abused, distrustful, lonely woman... *snorts* Another hard to find gem are books with a dom!woman and a sub!man. I intensely dislike dom!man/sub!woman stories, so not my cuppa, but the other way around? Insanely hot, IMHO.

"Come Unto These Yellow Sands" by Josh Lanyon

5 stars out of 5

Josh Lanyon's books do things to me, peeps. They, like, push all my buttons. And this one's no exception. Neither Swift, nor Max are perfect - far from it actually - yet you can't help but love them. Josh Lanyon's strength really lies in his ability to write flawed, yet immensely likable and intriguing characters. What I found most interesting was the description of Swift's cocaine addiction, his cravings that hit him unexpectedly, even though he had been on the mend for 6 years - and I loved that, as judgmental as Max sometimes was, he was more than willing to help Swift, to do whatever it was he needed to help him cope. Wonderful.

"Lessons in Love (Cambridge Fellows #1)" by Charlie Cochrane

3.5 stars out of 5

I was smitten with the language. The book is set in the early 1900s and it really felt like reading a book from that time. Sure, I'm no linguist so I can't tell if what the author used was even remotely accurate, but it really felt that way. And not just the language but the characters' behavior, their attitude towards sex, it didn't feel like a modern romance force-planted in a historical setting like most historical romances do. This felt... genuine. Like reading a romance written by an author from those times only, you know, gay. I'll definitely check out the next book in the series because I want to know more about Jonty and Orlando.

"A Pirate's Primer (Chronicles of the Grey Lady #1)" by Jill Knowles

3 stars out of 5

Imagine Pirates of the Caribbean, only gay. The inspiration is pretty obvious. Oh, not that I complain, mind you, it's a pretty sweet book, if thin on the plot - what there is of the plot, is pretty interesting and I actually felt a bit sorry that the author didn't focus more on that, that she didn't thicken it, instead of going down the easy road and peppering the book with gratuitous sex scenes - pretty hot sex scenes, though. So yeah, a good book and even though it's nothing outstanding, I'll probably read #2 in the series.

"A Pint Light" by Devon Rhodes

This is basically a mushy PWP with little to no world-building. By the end of this short e-book, the reader has no idea how this world operates, if magic is known to everyone or not, why vampires can walk freely in the sun... Nothing. Less sex, more background info and plotting would've been appreciated.

"L.A. Mischief" by P.A. Brown

2nd in the L.A. series. I loved Des and I loved the friendship between Chris and Des and between David and Des. But I just didn't feel the mad love between David and Chris. I mean, Chris was pretty much head-over-heels for David, but David... David loved having sex with Chris - not making love, having sex - but he disliked everything Chris did and was outside the bedroom. I mean, he didn't even want to teach Chris how to drive stick or be seen with him in "his" bar. So yeah, I felt that Chris was selling himself short with David. And what really bothered me was that everybody blamed Chris when his and David's relationship failed. Seriously!

"Sort of Stranger than Fiction" by Josh Lanyon

I loved the atmosphere in this book, yet it felt... unfinished. There was no resolution, at least in my opinion. I mean, we did find out who killed those people found in the desert but other than that, the ending felt rushed. I know that not every book has to have a definite ending, but I expected something more. It felt as if the author simply didn't know how to end it, so he left it... out there, for the reader to interpret as he or she wished.

"Critic's Choice" by Josh Lanyon

This book had more than a touch of magic realism in it. The wind, the falling tree, the shop right in the middle of nowhere... I really loved the atmosphere, Angelo's remote mansion that was somehow scary and hilarious at once. And Neat, Neat was a hoot, really: "No one will hear you scream." LOL!

At the same time, I wanted to give Cris a hug. What Rey did, even though he knew, he must have known, how much it would hurt Cris should he find out... I'm not sure I could've forgiven him.

Synopsis... )

Review: Loved the book, especially the supernatural part. And the fact that Julian was not the author's typical hero, Julian was namely - as he was called in the book (it was the 20s, don't forget!) - a "pansy" which didn't sit well with Flynn, the other main character, at least at first.

One thing that I didn't like, though, was the abrupt ending. I expected an epilogue, at least.

Synopsis... )

Review: I did like the D/s relationship between the main heroes - I very much prefer it when such a relationship isn't just about sex, when the psychological side is described by the author and actually felt by the reader - on the other hand, it's still pretty much a PWP. It's a short-ish ebook but I still expected to learn something more about the main heroes - there were only two characters in the whole story - who they were, where they came from, anything. But the ebook consisted of two rather long sex scenes with some trimmings and that was pretty much it.

So, the D/s relationship was lovingly described but I would've preferred the characters to be more three-dimensional.

Synopsis... )

Review: This is a PWP and so mushy it's ridiculous. Silver, the alpha of the pack, calls Tony, his half-human mate, his "sweet baby", "honey", "sweet, sweet boy", "angel", "sweetness"... There's purple prose and then there's this, seriously. I almost laughed out loud. It read like a really bad fanfic.

Synopsis... )

Review: Great book. I admit that I have a soft spot for "academic" mysteries, stories set in the world of professors and TAs and students, so this one was really up my alley. I really liked Elliot, the fact that he wasn't flawless, that he admitted - at least to himself - that sometimes, he was prejudiced and petty. And I loved Tucker, so gruff yet so gentle with Elliot - well, at least when they weren't fighting...

I hope that there will be another book with these heroes!

Review: I would recommend the story to anyone who likes the TV show White Collar. Yes, in "Icecapade", a cat burglar falls for the FBI agent who's after him. Immensely likable characters, hot sex and the right dash of hurt/comfort that just pets the heart, this is Lanyon at his best.

You can either buy the story as it is or in the anthology "His For The Holidays".

Synopsis... )

Review: The "Holmes & Moriarity" books are quickly becoming my favorite series by Josh Lanyon, topping even the "Adrien English Mysteries", maybe because J.X. is not a jerk like Jake was. Also, it doesn't hurt that Christopher's acerbic monologues remind a lot of Stargate: Atlantis' Rodney McKay, bad back included.

Without spoiling the plot, I have to say that this book was darker than what I'm used to from Josh Lanyon. I felt so incredibly sorry for Christopher and I was so happy that J.X. stuck with him, through thick and thin and all that jazz. They are a lovely couple.

Synopsis... )

Review: Disappointed, that basically covers how I feel about the book. The main hero, Paul, is a cheating prick who couldn't keep it in his pants if his life depended on it and who keeps spouting about how he was cured of homosexuality even though he gets a hard-on for every pretty male ass he sees. Despite having a fiancée, he can't keep his hands off his ghostly ex-boyfriend, Lorin, an arrogant, selfish, pompous ass who doesn't give a damn if Paul gets fired, arrested or even killed, for that matter - and Paul, despite knowing all that is still all hot and bothered for him, putting down and generally belittling Eliott, the one man who kept waiting for him, years and years on end, during his Lorin phase and even after that. Paul basically sleeps his way through the book - that is, he sleeps with everybody and their uncle but his actual fiancée...

Despite some truly hilarious scenes, the book made me feel highly uncomfortable and aggravated :/

Review: Great premise and a great setting. Josh Lanyon sure knows how to evoke emotions - when Colin entered the underground room and suddenly became scared that someone would lock him in and he would suffocate, it really got my heart racing. And I liked all the backstory for Agro and Swanhild. But!

At the same time, the book felt... rushed. People in this world knew about magic. But what were the Arcane Services and how did they operate? How did Septimus stop the sea monster? Also, Septimus' declaration of love seemed to have come completely out of the blue. And the ending was so abrupt. They just let Irania go? Why did the faery woman help Colin? Did Colin have a magic of his own in the end or not?

So many loose ends, so many questions left unanswered. I was a bit disappointed.

Synopsis... )

Review: What started as an intriguing sci-fi quickly turned into a porny PWP. I was so disappointed because the idea was quite interesting. But instead of exploring the differences between humans and the Kuryeen, the author used the setting only as a springboard for the two main characters' humping. Some very interesting plots were touched upon - like Liam's detoxification - but it was all swept under the rug and the ending was so abrupt as if the author suddenly ran out of space. Disappointed.

Review: Short story, a part of the "PsyCop" series, takes place on New Year's Eve. Told from Jacob's POV. I loved reading a story from his POV, loved knowing what he thought and not just Vic who's the main protagonist of the series. Loved seeing Vic through Jacob's eyes, seeing how beautiful he was to Jacob, what he meant to Jacob. This story definitely makes the series richer.

Synopsis... )

Review: First in the "Petit Morts" series. A cute little story about a window washer and a car salesman who fall in love thanks to a little candy shop called Sweets to the Sweet. Yeah, that's pretty much it. Very short and Nathan and Tommy's first date is pretty much IT, the plot of the story. Likable characters but the ending felt rushed and rather abrupt.
