And...
Also, in various cancel/renew indexes - for example TVbythenumbers' or THRfeed's - the show is marked as "safe", not "on the bubble" or "in danger" or anything like that. Huh. It's actually pretty... creepy. In previous years, everybody and their uncle filed the show under "on the bubble". This year, everybody and their grandfather think that if the people involved decide to continue, there'll be S6. Don't get me wrong, it makes me very happy - I just don't know what to think about it XP
Fans have worried about the fate of this show each year from the very beginning, but this time, I am under the impression that Supernatural’s fate lies in the producers’ hands, not the network’s. The WB and now the CW have been awfully supportive of this show (though never supportive enough from its fans’ POV), allowing it to get to this essential fifth season, where the apocalyptic end game can finally play out. My understanding is that there will be some actual closure to the story (...) and that if the show continues beyond this season, a new story arc would have to be initiated. You’re right that the ratings breakthrough of The Vampire Diaries (...) casts a shadow on Supernatural’s struggles in TV’s most competitive hour of the week. But the CW has far worse problems on its schedule than this, and all I hope is that when Supernatural comes to an end, it will be more a creative than business decision and that all involved will prepare us for it. (...) The one thing I don’t want to happen is for it to outstay its welcome the way The X-Files ultmately did. Supernatural is far from that fate at this point. Source
And...
As far as I know, and leaning on the expertise of our in-house reporter who covers the show very closely, there still isn’t a decision on what will happen after Supernatural wraps this season of the apocalypse. This is what the series has been building up to all along, and we should all be thrilled the show got the chance to go there. Beyond that, Kripke & Co. would probably have to conceive a new story arc so the show wouldn’t go back to being demon-of-the-week (as entertaining as many of those episodes are). If everyone on the show wanted to move forward, I’d be surprised if the CW stood in their way, given the corporate interest Warner Bros. TV has in the franchise. Source
