So, the early ratings are in and it looks like SPN's are even lower than last week - viewership should be around 2.5 mil. only this week. It's... sad, to be honest.

You see, I watch several shows a week - not as many as a year ago but still it's a few. But there's no other show besides SPN that I'm so invested in. I mean, I like Castle, Bones, The Mentalist, Numb3rs well enough. I love NCIS, NCIS:LA, Psych... But I don't really... ~live~ through these shows, there's no other way to describe it.

The only other show that I felt that way about was SGA - and they canceled it last year. This year's most likely SPN's last one. And it makes me terribly, terribly sad. You see, SPN ruined me for any other brotherly relationship out there, no other show comes even close to portraying the love between brothers that way - and I mean it in a perfectly gen sense this time. It was the same way with the McShep banter on SGA - since then, I found no banter that funny.

So, when I take into consideration that SPN will most likely end (and Castle and Numb3rs are just poised for cancellation too), I feel sad, I feel like I'm losing my best friend *sigh* What will I do next year? There'll be no show left that would I feel that strongly about...

ETA: SPN's ratings are 2.57 mil., 1.2/3 demo - that's 90 thousand less than the week before and the lowest this season (even lower than OTH's preliminary numbers) but at least demo remained the same.

I was under the impression the network wanted a season 6. Jensen and Jared are signed for six, but Kripe says he is not sure storywise of that was a good idea....or am I wrong in reading about the CW wanting it since compared to their other shows, the ratings are very good.

There are several factors that speak for S6: The show is close to syndication and in such cases, syndication money is the most important thing (see ABC picking up Scrubs). They already canceled TBL and Melrose Place is doing bad too. So far, they have no other show (maybe Smallville if it got S10) that could hold its own against GA, CSI, Fringe and The Office on Thu at 9pm. And SPN's W18-34 ratings are better this year.

Yes, Ostroff wanted another season - but that was before this season started and Fringe stole a huge portion of the audience. And the ratings keep falling this season - 3.39 -> 2.80 -> 2.68 and this week it'll be barely 2.50 :(

Yes, Kripke said back in season 2 or 3 that he had it all scripted out for just five seasons. Think about it this way though: would you rather still have the same awesome show and cherish each of the five seasons, or would you rather have a show that refuses to end and starts getting tiresome and downright stupid (ie: X-Files)? If SPN could stay this awesome for a few more seasons, I'd love it, but how many shows can stay that consistent for that long nowadays? Besides, if Kripke only has storyline for five seasons, stretching it out longer would only ruin it.

Surely Castle isn't poised for cancellation? Really? Man, that sucks. I love that show!

Well, Kripke said that yes, the current storyline will end with S5 - but that doesn't mean that a new storyline can't come up. He said it last month in an interview with EW.

To be honest, I prefer to see a show end when I fall out of love with it. It doesn't make me so sad then. I would prefer to lose interest in SPN first and then see it end. I'm like that. I can easier deal with the cancellation of a show that I like but don't obsess about anymore, you know?

And yeah, Castle is barely holding there - its retention out of DWTS is horrible. I guess that only if both The Forgotten and Eastwick bomb will it be renewed.

It's in such a killer timeslot. It doesn't surprise me that it's not doing well. Fringe appeals to a lot of the same audience.

Maybe I'm an optimist, but I don't think season 6 would necessarily be bad. I trust the people involved in the show not to let it become another X Files. It would be nice go back to the beginning format, and finish the show off with a final season of MotW.

I think that with Kripke in charge, next season could be just as awesome. I just really hope that we get it *crosses fingers*

Don't worry so much about the ratings. A lot of network TV is declining, and two of the biggest factors are a) increased DVR usage in the Nielsen system (didn't they jump up to 38% with DVRs no, up from 20-something), meaning more Nielsen viewers that watch later, and b) increased competition. There's more good TV this season than there's been in a long time, and every network wants their best shows in the best slots.

Fringe is getting murdered, and given the number of people who appear to watch both Fringe and Supernatural, both of these shows are hurting each other. It's really never a good idea to have two sci-fi shows in the same timeslot, simply because there tends to be so much crossover audience for sci-fi tv. I reeeeally think Fox is going to end up moving Fringe though, because the show has dropped rather drastically and clearly can't handle the competition. It's probably gonna get banished to Fridays, paired with Dollhouse, though it's possible Fox will smarten up and just switch Lie To Me and Fringe.

I'm glad we got the DVR numbers early this week - they were 4 million, which is above the average for last season's DVR numbers, so if it says one thing, it's that the same number of people are always watching this show, they just might be watching it late. And the CW definitely likes those DVR numbers, as their press releases indicate.

I thought that the DVR numbers were for the premiere, 2.9 up to 4 mil. *scratches head*

I don't think that Lie To Me would be able to handle CSI, though. I do think that Fox needs to move Fringe ASAP. I mean, 2.3 demo at 9pm on Fox? That's cancellation material right there and I would say that Fringe is rather an expensive show to make - but I can be mistake there. I mean, to go from 4.0 to 2.3 from S1 to S2...

I hope that the fact that SPN is so close to syndication will help. I mean, in cases like this, syndication money takes the front seat - ABC did pick up the meandering Scrubs to sell it in syndication...

And the demo is good: "Supernatural held steady with a 1.2 18-49 demo rating, it was up a tenth in adults 18-34 (1.3 rating vs. 1.2 last week), and flat with women 18-34 (1.5 rating)." Source (http://tvbythenumbers.com/2009/10/02/tv-ratings-thursday-abc-wins-flashforward-greys-anatomy-stay-strong-private-practice-opens-big/29263). Which means that even though the viewership fell, the 18-34 demo is almost 37% higher than last year.

Mmmhm, that's what I meant. DVR numbers only come out about 3 weeks after the episode. (I actually meant to say "earlier this week", not "early this week" - is that what confused you?)

Fringe is expensive, though they did try to cut costs by moving to film in Chicago this season. They need to do something with Fringe; it really can't stay there.

I am hoping for a U.S. syndication deal! We have plenty of foreign ones, of course, but I hope the show gets a deal on a major US cable channel. I think it'll most likely end up on SyFy or TNT.

We were really even with last week, which is good! I'd like to see the numbers higher, of course, but W18-34 is what the CW cares about anyway, so. *hands* With all the competition and whatnot, I think we're doing as well as can be expected.

Yeah, it did. Sorry X)

I hope that SyFy buys it, I really do. I think it would fit perfectly with their Ghost Hunters reality show. And it would also fit their new, broader strategy - not just scifi but fantasy, urban fantasy too.

I'm trying not to worry about the numbers, I really am. But when I see people all "I want the show to end this year" and "I hope it tanks in the ratings so that they end it this year", I get all upset. I mean, it's... it's my BABY! *cuddles show*

On the other hand, if it wasn't canceled last year and the year before despite lower 18-34 and W18-34... Now the general viewership dropped but those numbers climbed so... Argh *flappy hands*

This is why I stay away from the SPN 'fandom" I can't believe people say they want it to be canceled. I cna understand about enindg on a high note, but to want teh show to tank? *shakes heads*

I'll stick to my safe F-list
