5x01 drew in 3.39 mil. and 1.5/4 demo. Good for Supernatural. Bad considering the lead-in, The Vampire Diaries, was 4.84 mil. and 2.1/6 demo. I mean, I know that TVD was a series premiere and SPN faced the bulk of NBC's football coverage, still... What will happen when CSI, Fringe, The Office etc. start? It makes me rather sad. This show deserves much more attention :(

Don't worry - I don't think it's fair to expect Supernatural to hold onto too much of the Vampire Diaries' premiere audience, especially considering Supernatural pretty much just has its core audience. 3.39 million is higher than the average last year, and would have been the 5th-highest number of viewers last year. Also, Supernatural out-rated 90210, Melrose Place, AND a two-hour America's Next Top Model in total viewers and A18-49 this week, which is nothing to sneeze at.

I am a bit nervous about how Fringe coming into the timeslot will affect Supernatural's ratings, just because I think there's a bit of crossover appeal there.

Yeah, I posted in several forums how it's not really fair to compare The Vampire Diaries to Supernatural and find SPN lacking considering that TVD had its series premiere and it's a show leaning towards young girls whereas SPN is more male skewing and there was a huge football thingy on NBC last night. Also, SPN is in its fifth cycle and I'm not sure how much crossover audience there is between TVD and SPN - I mean, both are "paranormal" but that's where the similarities end. TVD is basically a romance, SPN is a horror. I bet that many of the girls who swoon over TVD are too scared of horror of SPN's calibre...

And I agree. Fringe is the only show that will hurt SPN for sure - remember the way Lost slaughtered SPN a couple of years back?

I actually quite enjoyed The Vampire Diaries!! It should actually appeal to quite a lot of people - it's not just a romance. The story is quite interesting, the feuding vampire brothers storyline is excellent, and I quite enjoy how they've done the vampires so far (all my favorite pieces of typical vampire mythology!). It was quite scary too! The show has a lot of potential, and I'm hopeful it continues to do well. It'll surely drop a bit next week, but I think it + Supernatural will continue to make Thursdays a solid night for the CW, which makes me happy because I want this network to continue to produce genre shows.

TVD does appeal to more people in the target demographic (Women aged 18-34) than SPN does. I'm hopeful some women who watch TVD will check out SPN on occasion, because once upon a time, SPN DID perform quite well with women (the 1st 16 episodes of season 1). It's extremely hard for a show to gain viewers in its fifth season though, so. The performance is just fine for now. SPN increased a bit in W18-34 and A18-34, which is all the network cares about anyway.

remember the way Lost slaughtered SPN a couple of years back?

I wouldn't say Lost slaughtered SPN - SPN only went against new of episodes of Lost four times (01/31/2008, 02/07/2008, 02/14/2008, and 02/21/2008), and all were right in line with how SPN performed during the rest of the season. The second highest-rated episode of the season (Jus In Bello) was even on one of those days! Two of the other three episodes were above the season's average.

I'm not sure how much damage can really be done considering this is already SPN's last season. It's not like the numbers are going to be evaluated for renewal purposes.

Right now, it's just about keeping the fans they have, and they aren't going to dump SPN for Fringe. Fringe really has nothing that I watch SPN for, so ... As long as the numbers are decent, I imagine they'll let the whole season play out.

Besides, as was mentioned, since the ratings for a lot of their other shows are so low, it's not like they have something to replace SPN with.

It doesn't have to be its last season. Dawn Ostroff would like to see it continue - she said it so herself before this season started - J2 are contracted for one more season and even Kripke is willing to stay if they would have him - he said that he had been talking about the 5-year-plan because he never thought the show would last that long on air. He did admit that he did have many more tales to tell.
