Crazy things...
Apr. 11th, 2009 09:57 amThis chart shows what a promo spot costs aired during various TV shows. You know what's crazy? Supernatural has the third cheapest spots on the CW - right after their failing The Game and Privileged. Even Stylista, a complete bomb if there was a one, demanded more for a spot than their frickin' third most popular show! This is insane!
And another insane thing? According to one comment in the PiFeedback forum, CBS' next season's programing schedule was leaked and... and... They want to air the NCIS spin-off on Sunday! They want to split NCIS and The Mentalist, the most successful combo they have, and air TM on Thursday at 10pm! They want to air Criminal Minds at 8pm - I don't think that CM with its gruesome murders is an 8pm show. And Numb3rs will only get half a season? Sheesh! I mean, the only positive thing is that it looks like Eleventh Hour will be back. But other than that... I really do hope that this a mistake!

Date: 2009-04-11 01:49 pm (UTC)I think iIt's just because the spots for Grey's (and CSI, even Office because of good demos) are so expensive, advertisers won't pay much opposite it.
And they are negotiated at the upfronts before anybody has seen any numbers for the Season. I betcha GoGi made considerable less ad money in Season 2 and Beverly Hills - probably got the biggest prices with their hype this Season - will tumble next.
On the other hand our numbers/demos rose and Grey's fell so we might actually get a bit better rates in Season 5 then this year.
This buiz is so wonky.
To the CBS schedule? What? CM at 8? The insanely cut version or what? Crazy.

Date: 2009-04-11 05:12 pm (UTC)BUT the thing with those numbers if, those are the numbers negotiated last May for this year. Meaning, the rates were based on the 07/08 season's numbers - which Supernatural did quite badly in. I imagine SPN has seen some increases throughout this season due to the increased ratings, and will see much better ad rates for the 09/10 season. :)
Every time the CW doesn't meet the "minimum expected ratings," they're typically going to need to pay back advertisers. I imagine they owe a hell of a lot back for 90210, Privileged, Stylista, and Everybody Hates Chris, and if any of those return, it'll be to lower ad rates (90210 shouldn't see TOO big of a drop, since it can get good demos for the first half of the season). But show's that have done BETTER than last year, like Supernatural, Gossip Girl, and One Tree Hill, should see better starting rates for next year. And should have gotten some increases toward the end of the season. :)
Thankfully, ad rates aren't the be-all and end-all. Television shows make money in a lot of extra ways, and some spend more money than others (think of all the promotion put into Gossip Girl and 90210). Supernatural is actually the second highest-selling CW show on DVD (the highest selling? Smallville).
