Brent Weeks
Feb. 3rd, 2009 09:24 amI started reading Brent Weeks' "The Way of Shadows", I'm on page 78 and so far, so good. But it eerily reminds me of Joshua Palmatier's "Throne of Amenkor" series. His Varis is so much like Weeks' Azoth that it's not even funny: a gutterscum that becomes a thief becomes a spy becomes an assassin becomes a bodyguard becomes... Uh, that would be spoiling it. On the other hand, in Palmatier's book you know exactly where it's headed and it's not about the destination but about the journey. But so far, I like Palmatier's version better: It's simpler, straighter, cleaner, he doesn't clutter the story with weird terms and plethora of characters. We will see how Weeks' book turns out :)

Out of the whole Liquor series, this is the one that has the most cohesive kitchen team in it (besides D*U*C*K*S, which is just incredibly hard to get ahold of). It's also a great book with a m/m romance at the heart of it.
