I would have never thought...

... that I would ever say it but! I just watched SG-1's episode The Pegasus Project - you know, the Xover episode with SGA - and I must say that I like the chemistry among the SGA characters better than among the SG-1's members. Just a year ago, I would have considered such a statement sacrilegious but now...
The SG-1 team is great, they have a nice relationship but... When you look at the SGA team, they all have such curious quirks: Sheppard is a closeted math geek, McKay can come up with the most ingenious plans under the threat of imminent death, Ronon can be whiny like a five-year-old when faced with a decision he doesn't like and Teyla is very manipulative when she needs to be. And they just... click!
On SG-1, Jack was portrayed as too dumb, never understanding anything science-related, which kinda bothered me after a while. Sam Carter was always right, just always. Teal'c... well, Teal'c was there. Only Daniel was a truly fascinating character who was allowed to do huge mistakes. Don't get me wrong, I loved them to pieces and they were all very lovable but SGA one-upped them, definitely.
Maybe it's because of the sorta island mentality of the series that everything feels more... intimate, with the city in the middle of an ocean and Earth light-years away...

Date: 2008-08-02 09:44 pm (UTC)I came into SGA before I fell for SG-1 (I have a long and complicated story with SG-1 which includes deciding I hated it after seeing one single episode, and then slowly being won over years later), but - for me, one of the absolutely biggest differences is the setting.
In SG-1, they always, always have superiors and orders and their respective internal ranks to deal with. Sure, there's the odd episode where they're somewhere they can't get in touch with their superiors, or the situation is desperate enough that Jack can't pull rank on Sam, but overall, SG-1 is the team stuck in secret tunnels under a mountain, where people they've never even met can decide to let one of them die, and they can do nothing to change that. (That's the plot of "48 Hours"!)
Atlantis is a city of light and air, floating in an ocean in another galaxy. For the whole first season, they are forced to rely on each other, and there are no superiors around to interfere. Even after that - well, even if there are superiors, the team won't let them interfere. (See "The Return".) I know there are exceptions, of course, and I'm curious to see how Woolsey will affect this, but... In general, that's how the city works. As much as I loved Hammond - on Atlantis, John is the chief military commander. John. How much further from "by the book" can you get? And look at John's team! Nobody on John's team is his subordinate. They all follow him out of a sense of personal loyalty, and it's clear that he is their leader, but the other three aren't even in the military. Heck, two of them aren't even from John's own galaxy! Which, to me, makes their relationship that much more appealing - they're not working together because someone ordered them to. They're working together because together they are the best team they can be. ♥
Annnnnnd I will stop rambling now. Sorry! ^^;;

Date: 2008-08-02 09:59 pm (UTC)I just don't get why people keep comparing SGA to SG-1 and finding it lacking. I mean, SG-1 and SGA are two completely different situations, two completely different series.
I had watched SG-1 for seven years before I basically dropped it because it kept changing it too much for my liking. But I adored the show and I still love it. I just think that the SGA charas are much richer and they have greater possibilities. Except for Woolsey, there's no one there they need to immediately answer to!
And about John being the military commander - did you notice how even Lorne loosened up around him? He used to be so uptight, always in uniform and now... John is a bad influence XP

Read the beginning paragraph and tell me you aren't hooked.
"Where He Wants to Be"
http://semivowel.livejournal.com/2757.html
The summary says it all, but not really: " John's used to not getting what he wants. Includes: public sex, the good drugs, the bad drugs, penis-shaped fruit, Dancing!Rodney, and the ping pong ball from hell." This may be my favorite SGA story.
"In Which Rodney Dates, John is Curious, and Cadman Helps"
Which is sweet. And funny. And...just read it!

"Instantaneous"

Best line: "You know," said John, "tomorrow, you've got to try and shoot me."
Let me know what you think!
