katikatIt's really hard for me to explain why I love some female characters and hate some others. Usually, I'm not indifferent to women. Mostly, it's instinctual but there are some things that I do and don't like about women...
I love women who are strong, very very strong - strength of will, of character. I love women whose strength comes from the inside and it's quiet and unassuming. I love women who are smart, even smarter than men. I love women who don't have to prove to anybody on regular basis that they are good at what they do, they prove it by doing their job. I love women who can deliver a joke but they can take one gracefully too. I love women who can kick ass physically.
I hate women who are pretenders: strong only when it suits them. I hate women who whine and faint. I hate women who are dumb. I hate women who are pricklier than a cactus, snapping at and abasing others just because they are in a position where they can do so. I hate women who need to prove to men that they can out-whatever them. I hate women who can look strong and smart only by making others look like weaklings and idiots.
My favorite female characters ever were Xena and Gabrielle, Ziva David from NCIS, Starbuck from Galactica, Scully from X-Files and many many more.
There was one female character in particular that I adored and that was Claudia on the German TV series Der Clown. She could out-smart, out-shoot, out-drive the main hero, Max, but not once did she brag about it. It was a fact and she proved herself by helping Max, saving his life etc.
I was thinking about who could Sam and Dean from Supernatural settle with because even though I adore Wincest, let's be honest, it could never happen on the show. For me, the ideal couples would be Sam/Sarah and Dean/Kathleen (the sheriff from The Benders). Why?
Sarah is someone that Sam could settle with. But at the same time, she would understand that he forgot about her birthday because he was hunting this nasty zombie one town over. If he brought her flowers the next day that is. And Kathleen is someone that Dean could continue hunting with. Remember when she shot the guy who killed her brother just for fun? That's Dean in female form.
So yes, I do like female characters, I'm just picky *shrugs*
