It depends on where I am. At ff.net, I have learned the fine art of reading into summaries and I have my favorite authors. Here, I'll set aside the summaries/authors I like, and read from lowest to highest word count. Also, here, in the case of "Heroes," I set aside anything that has Peter, Nathan, or the brothers, except for things that have both Peter and Claire in it.
FF.net, I usually visit only when someone recs something to me from there. I don't have the patience to wade through the deep waters of pre-teenage fantasies *rolls eyes*
Or when I want to read some Chris-centric Charmed fics. Unfortunately, FF.net is the only place where one can find them. It's a shame...
Most of the comms I read in aren't that active. ^_~
If it's something by an author I know, chances are I've already read the fic when they posted it in their LJ. For other stories, I look at the first few paragraphs to decide if it's worth reading.
The Supernatural fandom is very active these days. The time will come when there will be only few new fics to read but right now, I feel quite overwhelmed to be honest. That's why I mostly read only fics that someone recs as amazing :)
