So, I think you remember this:
Bela: 20-30, Beautiful and sexy, she's a woman without a conscience. A mercenary in the supernatual world. She is cocky, confident, mercurial and very funny. Actress must possess physical prowess, pless submit all ethnicities, SERIES REGULAR
Ruby: 20-late20's, Beautiful and sexy, mysterious and quiet. She's an enigmatic demon hunter. She is a most brutual, ruthless hunter; in fact she is a better hunter than Sam and Dean. SERIES REGULAR
I bet that I wasn't the only one annoyed, pissed and other things, scoffing "Barbies" and the dreaded "Love Interests" etc. But then, I started thinking...
Two new girls don't necessarily have to be love-interests. They don't even have to be partners. Because ruthless? Without a conscience? I can't see Sam and Dean hooking up with someone like that. Not after what they went through with Gordon.
So, what if these girls aren't meant to be partners but adversaries? One girl in the TV.com forum mentioned the possibility that the ruthless girl could be Steve Wandel's daughter. What if these two are hunting Sam and Dean? Maybe that's why Ruby should be better than Sam and Dean because how else could she trace them if she wasn't better?
And besides the girls' description doesn't sound like love-interest stuff anyway. More like a challenge. And it was mentioned that the hunters are trying to find out who killed Steve Wandel. And the hunters know that Sam has demonic powers. It's known that the boys are on their own now. So, what if this was planned from the beginning? Now that the actor playing Gordon has a series of his own, they needed to replace the hunter who hunts the boys with someone else. So why not with two girls? Because female rivals would be a far greater challenge for the Winchesters...
And Sera Gamble promised no backseat love-interests. I just hope it wasn't something like: "Either you add two female regulars or you have no show, Eric", that it wasn't a condition for the show's renewal...

Date: 2007-06-13 04:22 pm (UTC)That's an interesting idea and I think I could buy that if they weren't going to be regular characters. Recurring, yes. I could see the adversary thing that way, showing up every so often, like Gordon. But regular implies in basically every episode. If the girls are hunting Sam and Dean, Sam and Dean aren't doing a very good job of keeping a low profile if the girls find them episode after episode. That's why I keep thinking that they'll be traveling with the boys somehow (barf, gag) which would explain their constant presence. [sigh]

Date: 2007-06-13 05:57 pm (UTC)I really hope that they let out the "series regular" to learn people's reaction to it. I really really really hope so *crosses fingers* Too bad that there is no way to find out until the show is on air :(

Date: 2007-06-14 12:49 am (UTC)I hate this. I may not even watch the show if this comes to fruitiion. Damn.
If these girls appear in 13 episodes, it's 14 episodes too many. And I still think that this is the network executives sticking their dirty fingers in to attract male viewers.
Excuse me while I go clean my brain.

Date: 2007-06-14 05:09 am (UTC)Two great seasons and leaving us wanting more is alot better than two great season and all the subsequence seasons leave us wishing we had brain bleach or a mind wipe genie.
This may pollute even my enjoyment of past episodes. Many the show I've watched where the show was ruined like this and now I can't even watch the episodes when it was good.

Date: 2007-06-13 10:51 pm (UTC)I'm much more interested in the challenge, particularly if Kripke chooses to explore the hunters looking for Steve Wandell's killer. And since Kripke told us in season one how they had the story through the end of season three outlined, it's entirely possible that this was coming from the very beginning.

Date: 2007-06-14 01:46 am (UTC)If they're really interested in bringing someone in to play off the boys, why not guys if there's not going to be any romantic action between Bela and Ruby and the Winchesters? Or bring in some realistic older women--a la Ellen--hunters who *could* be better than Sam and Dean? Or a third option no one has mentioned--a married couple close to John's age who actually lost their child in a fire. How about Bobby's daughter and a friend?

Date: 2007-06-14 04:38 am (UTC)Sure it does. It's the "Mysterious Persons of the Opposite Sex who end up Love Interests" angel. They will start out as antagonists and it will blossom into "Wuv, Twu Wuv". Those are surface descriptions. The girl without a conscience will develop one, the cold hard killer will find a heart...all for the love of a good man....
And why would female rivals be a far greater challenge for the Winchesters? Is it because women are special and better at this stuff than men? Or is it because Dean and Sam are really secret chauvinists(and no I have never ever seen Dean as a chauvinist but I won't into why right now except to say that liking to have with many sex with women does not make one a chauvinist:) and so will of course underestimate there female counterparts? That would make me gag as it has no basis in anything we've seen so far.
I don't care who Ruby is, no way should she be better than Dean and Sam. It's just utterly contrived. Not even Gordon was better than Dean and Sam. And if it Wendells daughter then we'll get the sob story and she starts to really fall for one of the boys and one of the boys for her and then it will come down "Will she or won't she kill Sam and will Sam or Dean have to kill her" and no...just not interested in seeing that.
I any case if these two characters were named Jack and Ralph I wouldn't like them any better.
