So yeah, as impossible as it may seem, I really did write a fic again. Yes, me. It's been sitting there quietly for some weeks now and today, I finally found the time to actually post it. Go me ^_^
Title: Beginning to Live Again
Author: KatiKat
Fandom: Innocent Venus
Disclaimer: The characters are not mine and I don't get money for misusing and abusing them.
Pairing: Hm, sorta Jo/Jin?
Warnings: Ficlet (is that even a warning?)
Notes: # 1 My biggest thank-you to
yami_tai for the great beta job! You rock, petal!
# 2 I didn't like the ending of the anime. And thus, I came up with an alternate ending... Or maybe a sequel to the ending. Or something like that *scratches her head*
Beginning to Live Again
by KatiKat
Jo watched the helicopter turn into a small speck in the blue sky and didn't look away until the machine disappeared leaving him truly alone amongst the still smoking debris. Only then did he turn away and start walking down the hill towards the hidden shelter that he'd found earlier that day, located farther away in the trees.
As he stepped into the ruined building of the former military barracks, he stopped just beyond the threshold to allow his eyes to adjust to the darkness that ruled inside the ruin. When finally the outlines of debris arose from the shadows, he turned towards the corner where he knew he would find the one he was looking for.
Dropping his sack by the door, he climbed over the shambles of the fallen roof towards the darkest place and the figure that huddled forlornly under a military green blanket. He dropped to his knees in front of the dark clad man but the other one didn't even react to his presence.
Jo leaned closer and pushing the blanket back from the white hair of his former best friend, he took Jin's pale face in both of his hands and raised it so that he could look him directly in the empty, sunken eyes underlined with deep grey smudges.
"Jin?" Jo whispered, not wanting to startle the other man who kept turning from apathetic to skittish without warning.
Jin looked at him for a long time, then blinked very slowly and gifted him with a sweet, guileless smile that tore Jo's heart. "Jo," the white-haired man responded slowly, happily and rubbed his face against Jo's rough palm.
Jo forced himself to smile at the man whose survival he decided to keep even from his closest friends. No matter what Jin had done in the past, they used to be friends. Or at least Jo used to consider Jin a friend and that was all that mattered to him. Should the new government get their hands on the Phantom's Second-In-Command, they would lock him up and throw away the key. And no matter what sins Jin had committed, Jo simply couldn't allow that to happen. Jin wouldn't survive such treatment, not in his current state of mind. It pained Jo to look into the light brown eyes that used to sparkle with intelligence but now held a dull, almost childish look.
"Are we leaving, Jo?" Jin asked quietly but without true interest.
Jo nodded. "Yes, we are."
Jin smiled at him innocently again and taking Jo's offered hand, scrambled to his feet then cuddled closer to the dark-haired young man. Jo laid an arm around the other man's shoulders and hugged him closer for a moment.
And then he took a deep breath and together with the one human being he felt closest to in the world started for the new life that awaited them somewhere out there, in the new world.
The End
