Last night, I finished reading "Tribute Trail" by Terri Beckett and Chris Power and I have really mixed feelings about that one.

"Tribute Trail" depicts the story of Kherin, the Goddess' Chosen, and Rythian, the Sun Stallion of the Shi'R'Laen tribe. Kherin's cousin, Prince Alzon, is jealous of the love the King shows Kherin, so he drugs his cousin and sells him into slavery (to kill the Chosen One is the greatest sin of all). Kherin ends up at the hearth of Rythian who has just recently challenged and defeated the Sun Stallion and became the leader of his tribe. The book then describes their struggle to walk the path the Gods have chosen for them - I don't want to spoil it too much :)

For the first time I truly understood what people mean when they say that some book reads like a fanfiction. This is the case. Don't get me wrong, it's a good book, but it has only 256 pages. There could have been twice more if the authors took the care to flesh out the characters. The backgrounds are quickly skipped over just like the battles. And there is more; for example, I would like to know how the main characters grew up, who was their family, how did Rythian marry, who was Kherin's beloved whom he had lost before the book began. You simply feel that there was much left out. And what I hated the most: the POV changes in the middle of the text without any break or warning or even you noticing.

I would give this book three stars out of five because it's still enjoyable and quite a good read. But it could have been so much more :(
