Republic of Doyle S1
Feb. 15th, 2015 10:25 pmGood gosh, I fell for this Canadian TV show SO hard! It's amazing. Pretty much in the vein of due South, a hilarious detective series about Jake and Malachy Doyle, son and father, respectively, who own a detective agency in a small town in Newfoundland. Both Jake and Malachy used to be cops but now they work as PIs together with Malachy's fiancée, Rose, and Des, a former sprayer who pissed Jake off so much that Jake made it his mission to hunt him down - only for Rose to hire Des as their PI help, much to Jake's horror. Because Des might be a sweet kid but he's also a walking disaster. Oh and Des is in love with Tinny, Malachy's granddaughter and Jake's niece, who wants to be a cop. And then there's Jake's ex-wife and Leslie, Jake's go-to cop and his future wife. Hilarity ensues, of course.
The main hero of that kerfuffle is Jake played by Allan Hawco who also co-created and co-wrote the show. Nice! Jake's really, really good looking which doesn't hurt. But he's also really sweet. And even though he's a womanizer, at least at the beginning, he's kind and self-sacrificing and loving - and loved. That's the beauty of the show, the family is really close and they love each other very much. Even though Malachy calls Jake the expendable "runt of the litter" - Jake's his youngest son - he also admits that Jake's not just his son, he's his best friend and he would die to protect him. And that's simply amazing. I have a weakness for father-son relationships.
I also like that Jake makes mistakes. A lot of them. Not because he's dumb but usually, he's put in a position where he has to choose between two bad options. And he pays for that - over the course of the show, he is jailed so many times and not just for a day or two. And the people around him pay for his mistakes, too. And he's aware of that. But usually, there really is no other option, usually he really has no other choice. But the consequences are there. Still, it doesn't mean that the people around him don't love him because, again, usually they understand the why behind his actions.
Also, so, SO many cool guest stars! From Rob Stewart and Ian Tracey, to Paul Gross and Jessica Steen, to Russell frickin' Crowe himself! Great series. Fantastic! And I still have 5 seasons to go \o/
