I finished Republic of Doyle S3 today! Good God, I love the show so much. It makes me so happy and it gives me so many cute, fuzzy feelings! \o/

I just adore the Doyle family. Whether they are related by blood - like Malachy and his three kids, Christian, Kathleen and Jake (the main hero) plus Tinny, Kathleen's daughter - or they became a part of the the Doyle mayhem by choice - Rose and Des - they follow the motto "One for all and all for one" to the letter. And it's glorious. To see them all work together to keep both the bad guys and the cops at bay in the S3 finale was a thing of beauty! Even Christian and Kathleen lent a hand and when they were told, "There's a bomb hidden somewhere in our house or the bureau or the bar!", off they went searching for it instead of running away!

If you didn't watch this show (it's finished, 6 seasons in total) - WHY DID YOU NOT WATCH THE SHOW? It's hilarious and there are so many famous guest stars! Like the cast of The Listener or Lost Girl, Paul frickin' Gross himself is a recurring! The actor who played his father on due South, too! And even Jessica Steen who played Frazer's sister! It's fantastic!

I've been watching season 2 of Republic of Doyle these last few days. The cases are nothing special, I'm in it for the Doyle family running the Doyle & Doyle detective agency: Jake Doyle, the main character, his father Malachy, Mal's wife Rose, their hapless helper Des and Jake's niece and Mal's grand-daughter, Tinny. They're hilarious and their crazy adventures are, well, crazy.

But in S2, there's this one episode, ep 207, that deals with murderous psychiatrists and also with Jake's older brother, Mal's eldest son, Christian. And the whole episode long, you just feel sorry for Jake. Because Christian is a screw-up, drugs, criminals, the whole shebang - and yet, Mal loves Christian best, always gives him the benefit of the doubt unlike to Jake and everything's Jake's fault - and Jake, knowing for a fact that his father loves Christian better, just takes it, all the blame, every accusation, because he doesn't want to see his father's heart broken.

This scene just killed me:

Psychiatrist: Does it bother you that you don't have your father's approval? That he loves your brother more?

Jake: God no, it's easier. That way I have less distance to fall. And we all fall, eventually.

And he isn't angry or sad or disappointed. He just sees it as a fact. He knows his father does love him - but he also knows that he will never be able to measure up to Christian, even though all Christian does is fuck up, he's simply his father's darling.

And that's incredibly heartbreaking. Because Jake does everything, literally, to protect the people around him. He ends up in hospital or in jail time and time again, trying to keep his loved ones safe. And his father does realize that in the end, that it's Jake who is really worthy of his love, and he apologizes to him but... all the years and years of this treatment conditioned Jake to simply not expect anything, from anybody. Sad.

Good gosh, I fell for this Canadian TV show SO hard! It's amazing. Pretty much in the vein of due South, a hilarious detective series about Jake and Malachy Doyle, son and father, respectively, who own a detective agency in a small town in Newfoundland. Both Jake and Malachy used to be cops but now they work as PIs together with Malachy's fiancée, Rose, and Des, a former sprayer who pissed Jake off so much that Jake made it his mission to hunt him down - only for Rose to hire Des as their PI help, much to Jake's horror. Because Des might be a sweet kid but he's also a walking disaster. Oh and Des is in love with Tinny, Malachy's granddaughter and Jake's niece, who wants to be a cop. And then there's Jake's ex-wife and Leslie, Jake's go-to cop and his future wife. Hilarity ensues, of course.

The main hero of that kerfuffle is Jake played by Allan Hawco who also co-created and co-wrote the show. Nice! Jake's really, really good looking which doesn't hurt. But he's also really sweet. And even though he's a womanizer, at least at the beginning, he's kind and self-sacrificing and loving - and loved. That's the beauty of the show, the family is really close and they love each other very much. Even though Malachy calls Jake the expendable "runt of the litter" - Jake's his youngest son - he also admits that Jake's not just his son, he's his best friend and he would die to protect him. And that's simply amazing. I have a weakness for father-son relationships.

I also like that Jake makes mistakes. A lot of them. Not because he's dumb but usually, he's put in a position where he has to choose between two bad options. And he pays for that - over the course of the show, he is jailed so many times and not just for a day or two. And the people around him pay for his mistakes, too. And he's aware of that. But usually, there really is no other option, usually he really has no other choice. But the consequences are there. Still, it doesn't mean that the people around him don't love him because, again, usually they understand the why behind his actions.

Also, so, SO many cool guest stars! From Rob Stewart and Ian Tracey, to Paul Gross and Jessica Steen, to Russell frickin' Crowe himself! Great series. Fantastic! And I still have 5 seasons to go \o/
