Merlin officially canned

Well, it's official. BBC posted a press release, stating S5 was Merlin's last. Not that it wasn't expected but there has been talk about S6 or TV movies, so... Well, it's official now: link.
Honestly, I don't get how anybody can say this show "has run its natural course" or that the storylines reached their apex. Merlin's still being regarded as the village idiot, he's still a servant, not a trusted adviser and court sorcerer... *sigh* I hoped we would get more than a rushed, last second reveal, that we would actually see Arthur the Warrior/King and Merlin the Sorcerer working side by side... Yeah, I'm still miffed, not matter how I turn or twist it.
At this point, I hope the series finale really IS epic, that they won't repeat the clusterfest that was the S4 finale, that they actually deliver at least on this promise. Please, get at least THIS right, writers, and I might forgive you for all the other disappointments.
My perfect finale would be Arthur and Merlin leaving for Avalon to wait there till they are needed again, with Gwen staying as the Queen of Camelot. That would be heartbreaking but at the same time it would FEEL like a legend in the making.
