Sep. 13th, 2009 10:18 amYesterday, I rec'ed the CWRPS fic "Nosce Te Ipsum" in my LJ - and it's really strange but I don't remember any fic in any fandom influencing me to this point, like ever. Jared's attitude, his way of viewing life in general in that particular fic was amazing. So I did a little experiment and I tried to apply that view while surfing the net today and wow, it really did make a difference - several times it stopped me from commenting in a sort of a knee-jerk reaction on stuff other people posted. And it made me feel much better about myself in the process. Wow. Who would have thought that...

Review: First in the "Iron Elves" series. And quite good, actually. Once you get used to muskets and cannons in a fantasy book. I liked Konowa and his inability to connect with nature despite being an elf. I loved the dwarf Yimt and the bespectacled Alwyn. I liked Rallie the reporter and her drunk pelican Wobbly. What I didn't like was Visyna and her hypocrisy - yes, she wanted to save her land and the elfkyn but she turned her nose at the nomadic tribes because they were filthy and low, she was all for saving nature but with a clear conscience she plotted Konowa's demise and let herself be duped like a complete idiot. I just didn't see the attraction between her and Konowa, that must have been one of the most unbelievable romance I've ever read about.
But basically, when you step back you realize that the Empire is Europe, the elves are Indians and the elfkyn Native Americans and it's all about the Native Americans fighting against the white man.

The Kantarou and Muu's Kyoto Diary, an AU story, took too much place, just like the advertisement for the CD-drama that we will never get anyway. But I liked the bickering between Kantarou and Hasumi. And it was nice to see Haruka concerned for Kantarou when the exorcisms tired him out.
