I started reading Brent Weeks' "The Way of Shadows", I'm on page 78 and so far, so good. But it eerily reminds me of Joshua Palmatier's "Throne of Amenkor" series. His Varis is so much like Weeks' Azoth that it's not even funny: a gutterscum that becomes a thief becomes a spy becomes an assassin becomes a bodyguard becomes... Uh, that would be spoiling it. On the other hand, in Palmatier's book you know exactly where it's headed and it's not about the destination but about the journey. But so far, I like Palmatier's version better: It's simpler, straighter, cleaner, he doesn't clutter the story with weird terms and plethora of characters. We will see how Weeks' book turns out :)

I picked this ebook because many people on my GR flist liked it. But I just couldn't get into it. The characters seemed flat and even after 70+ pages, I didn't care at all what would happen to them. Maybe I'm just in a weird mood or something, who knows. It just felt like the book should have rather been a series of short stories, as it is it seems a bit convoluted - I felt like the paranormal stuff just didn't fit the beginning at all, it seemed like the authors suddenly decided to switch genres in the middle of the book. Hm...
