Fiona McIntosh and Marion Zimmer Bradley
Mar. 26th, 2006 04:28 pmI totally forgot about the Summer Time stuff. Whoa, what a shock in the morning! *bleary eyed*
I'm translating Fiona McIntosh's "Myrren's Gift" at the moment. Let me tell ya that if you want to feel blue and depressed, then this is a book for you. I mean, with the exception of Carol Berg's books, I've never encountered such a sad book. Betrayal upon betrayal, characters die, are beaten and tortured, the good characters suffer and suffer and suffer some more... All in all, it's a very painful book. Wonderfully written, that I have to admit, but personaly, I wouldn't choose this one because I'm not a masochist. Don't get me wrong, I love angst but this...
I took a peek at the other trilogy of hers, starting with "Betrayal" which wasn't licensed in the US yet (McIntosh lives in Australia) and it's the same... suffering, suffering, suffering. And she describes it in details... very graphic details. Her books are way too depressive for my taste :(
I finished reading the wonder that's "Earthian, Vol. 2" (can you say I love that manga? very very much and can't wait for the third book to be published) and so I picked up Marion Zimmer Bradley's "The Heritage of Hastur". It's set in her Darkover universe but you don't have to read other books in this series to understand this one since it pretty much stands alone. I tried to read some other Darkover books but didn't like them at all. This one is an exception though. It concentrates on Regis, the heir of Hastur, and his painful way to realization that he is gay and that his denial is blocking his telepathic abilities. He encounters a boy, a catalyst telepath, by the name Danilo, a young cadet, abused by the commander of the Guards... So far, it looks great!
And it's cold and raining outside! Whah! Thank the gods I don't have to go to school tomorrow... Next week is the last week of school for me for ever! Woohoo! *happy dance*
ETA: I found this site - SF and Fantasy Alternate Sexuality Listing. Very interesting!
