This is driving me nutty!!!

Folks, I need your help. I forgot the title and the author of a certain gay sci-fi trilogy. A scientist goes back in time (from the 23rd or so century) to the 19th century to find out... something. There, he meets a young man, a cartographer if my memory serves me right. He falls in love with him and decides to stay there, in the America of the 19th century even though it could mess up the time line really badly...

It was a trilogy where the first two books where sold in one, the third one followed. I know that they were quite expensive too... It's driving me up the wall!!!
